I ate at Monchon while at the 5th Street Brewpub a couple weeks ago. I had been eager to try their sandwich based on what I had seen/heard on Facebook, etc. So I went to place my order but, because one of the guys had gone to get change, the remaining guy – the cook – was alone. Needless to say, I couldn’t understand why he didn’t just take my order and get started on my sandwich(I was the only customer there at the moment). So I went back inside the pub(it was chilly outside) to wait 10 minutes for the other guy to return… this increased my anticipation for what looked to be an awesome sandwich. When I went back outside to place my order at the truck there were now additional customers and I had to wait in line a second time. When I placed my order I was regaled with what a Monchon is and how the bread is special and Spanish and made from a 500 year old recipe, yada yada yada. Finally receiving my sandwich I returned inside the pub to eat. I was hungry and the sandwich filled a void in my belly but that’s about the only positive thing I can say. When I opened the wrapper I was disappointed that the pictures used to advertise this sandwich overstate what you get. No, there is not a pile of meat and potato crisps spilling from a bun worthy of its 500 year recipe. To me it was a basically a mediocre sub bun with a paltry meat filling and a modest topping of potato crisps. The sandwich cost $ 7. I would have gladly paid $ 10 for what I thought I was getting but would not have paid $ 4 for what I got. Advice: drop the sales pitch, improve the product, and don’t make a customer wait in line twice.

This was my first time trying Monchon and boy what a treat… The thing about food trucks, you don’t worry about the seating area… so on to the staff and food. The two guys working in the truck were friendly and eager to explain my options on my sandwich. They had a nice energy and made me excited about my first Monchon… Now the sandwich… I was a little bummed that they didn’t have steak today. They only had chicken or pulled pork. I went with the chicken with the works which included lettuce, tomato, their secret sauce which was really good, and cheese. The only thing holding me back from 5 stars was the fact that they didn’t have steak and I would have liked a little more tomato. I only got 2 or 3 chunks. They are supposed to be back in my area next Thursday and I am hoping that they have steak… hint hint
