The baklava was AWESOME. Got the pistachio and walnut. Only 3 stars because the service was AWFUL. The lady who was helping us gave me dirty looks and made me and my date feel very uncomfortable. :/

Service is super slow and at times they don’t react to customers. If you are not familiar with arabic names of pastries, they won’t bother explaining and if you don’t speak arabic like me, then workers may just ignore you and you’ll stand there like an idiot waiting for an English speaker to come and help you out. Sweets are ok but pricey. I can get the very same sweets and even better ones for a lower price from another place. I’m not impressed

Shatila is a gem when it comes to food in the Detroit area. Tucked away in Dearborn, not too may people may know about it. It’s the most amazing, mindblowing sweet shop ever. I usually get the box of mixed sweets. The box comes with the baklava, Burma and while bunch of other sweets. They are extremely flavorful and not overpoweringly sweet. The cakes and pastries are also very good. My favorite is the tiramisu. They also sell fresh juice. The sugarcane juice is a must try.

Well whenever I take trip back to the motherland(Detroit) gota stop at Shatila’s in Dearborn. Why? Well all my friends and fam in NJ love Baklava. Shatila is the biggest baddest shop for Baklava and pastries! There are good baklava places all over Dearborn but least you know its always fresh here, you literally can end up waiting between 15 minutes to 45 because the lines can get that long. The positive part about waiting in line is you get to see how the baklava trays are refilled with fresh baklava through out the day. My last visit they refilled some the trays that got empty atleast 3 times in 35 minutes. The décor is nice and I think they were going for the Oasis vibe, but you probably won’t notice since you only came to experience the Dessert. The ice cream here has to me some of my fav, their pistachio is so rich and flavorful. Back to Shatila’s as a whole I’d give it 5 stars but I just can’t cause the long lines lol. Its good for business and shows demand but maybe they can be more innovative and figure out a way to get people in and out faster or make a separate take out location. Definitely the top Baklava place in Michigan!

When friends and family come out of town. This is normally the place we bring them after dinner. It is like a dream if you like sweets. My favorite thing here is Tiramisu, Fruit Tart, and the Chocolate Tart. Mamool squares and fresh Baklava obviously. But quite honestly have not tried anything that i didn’t like here. On a different note I was getting married a few years ago and the baker i was going with bailed out on me 30 days before the wedding date. These guys saved the day!!! For 200 people, the cake they made was huge OMG. They have a drinks area also i did try their fruit cocktail which was decent. If you like sweets, it is the place to go. It gets crazy busy during the month of Ramadan so make sure that month when you go, you don’t have anywhere to be.

I had never before seen such an elaborate collection of Middle Eastern pastries under one roof. They also have very proper looking french desserts. They have really good assorted boxes of pastries to take with you if you are not sure what you want. They also customize the boxes based on your preference. The ambiance is very different with lighted trees and cute round tables, must go when in the Detroit area.

Horrible service! Purchased $ 30 worth of dessert that was probably enough to feed 2 people. One of the desserts I ordered was a $ 4 dried out super sweet kanafa, I do not normally complain about food but this kanafa was old, thin and overly sweet. I went back to the counter and told the manager that the kanafa wasn’t as it usually is and he snickered and laughed and said«well it is sweet cause it’s a sweet.» ummm ok. That was rude… Then I asked if I can get something else he said no I don’t exchange anything again in a errogent manner and laughed with one of his employees as if I wasn’t standing there again they both laughed. What type of service is this, needless to say I replied back well I guess the only thing there is to do is NEVER come back. Trust me it’s not that good to come back anyway… Over priced, overly sweet and of course VERYVERYRUDE!!! PICSCOMINGSOON

Let me preface this by saying that I have always been a little nonplussed by baklava. I always thought they were alright, but would choose other sweets first, being more of a fan of desserts like tiramisù and crème brûlée… To me, backlava never have tasted super fresh, had been overly sweet, and lacked flavor that other sweets had. This all changed about two weeks ago. I’ve been studying Arabic for a few semesters, and on the last day of class this year, my professor brought boxes of sweets from Shatila to celebrate the end of the term. I proceeded to consume several of the baklava«fingers» and namoura that she so graciously brought us. I was instantly hooked. The namoura, for me, were especially addictive, with the amazing texture from the use of semolina flour, to the rich buttery, sweet flavor that hits you right at the end. I quickly started googling where these addictive sweets had come from. A few days later I was waxing lyrical about these sweets to a friend who lived in Michigan for a few years. She knew all about them and told me it wasn’t too terribly far from where we live in Columbus, Ohio. I sensed a road trip in our future. So yesterday, we decided to drive to Dearborn to check it out in person. I was a little intimidated when I first got there – none of the items were labeled, and everything looked too good to narrow it down, the people behind the counter were rapid-fire calling out numbers, and everyone else seemed to know what was going on. After an internal pep-talk, I timidly asked one of the girls working there how it worked. I ended up getting a half box of assorted Baklawa and half a box of Namoura to take home. We also ordered some delicious Knafeh(Nabulseya), Halawit-L-Jibin, and a sesame seed bar to try there(hey, we were hungry from the drive!). The Knafeh was great, they warmed it up there too. Just a note to anyone with nut allergies, they put pistachios on top of everything(good for me, bad for my friend who is allergic!), so watch out. The bakery is divided into three parts – the café which sells ice cream and coffee, the Mid-Eastern pastries, and French pastries. I didn’t try the ice cream or French pastries, so I can’t speak to them, but I am now a convert to Shatilanism as far as their Mid-Eastern pastries go. Thank goodness they ship via Fed-Ex worldwide for when the box is empty! I will definitely be making another trip in the future. The prices are also super reasonable, especially considering the quality of their product. Two filled half-boxes filled with enough pastries for a small army, plus the additional sweets we ordered came to a total of $ 30; considering the amount of food we ordered, it was well worth it. If you’re a first timer, go with enough time to take everything in!

Our first time here. This place has the best baklava I have ever had. Fresh, light in the honey so it’s not too sweet, and just the right size. Prices are awesome and the service is great and friendly. You walk in, grab a number, wait until served, then sit and enjoy. They even have ice cream. We will definitely be back. Took some Napoleons and eclairs to go. Can’t wait to try them.

This place is really crossed as they are really popular. I really don’t like any of the sweets that they sell. I only like the coffee and chocolate cake that they sell. The Arabic lady at the register is really rude. It’s not only the lady at the register, even the other people who help behind the counter are rude. People who are not familiar with Arabic sweets don’t know the name of the food and all and they just don’t want to help. Just come to this place for cakes. That’s it.

One of the busiest bakeries I have ever been in. My relatives from Ohio know about it and often request for us to bring several boxes with us. Keep away during the thick of the holidays if you think you’ll just pop in and pick something up. You will need to order ahead or at the very least really plan ahead. The kanife, petite fours, cakes and baklava are the best around. They have many other authentic treats that I’ve never tried. I did try a bite of their rose water ice cream once… I can say I’m not a fan. But I am told that it’s an acquired taste for those who grew up with things made with rose water. If you go try not to break the bank. So many choices so little $$

Their pistachio and ashta ice cream is amazing! The ice cream itself deserves 10 stars but the service isn’t the most friendly but I had someone nice today, she actually called me habibti lol. I can’t believe I haven’t written a review on this place yet, but it’s one of those places that is such an establishment and everyone knows about that it doesn’t even need a review. Amazing bakery items, my absolute favorite Arabic sweets and baklavas. The fruit tarts can be a hit or miss. The ice cream is delicious, especially the pistachio. The only thing I would add to make themselves better is a better coffee station. I love coffee with ice cream, so I got a large coffee and literally let the whole thing because it was so bitter. The girls working there are okay, it seems like they get annoyed with questions really fast. It doesn’t really matter, the stuff is so good, I hardly even mind the employees. Not something I say often. It is definitely a must to go there when in the Detroit area!

I’m ashamed of myself for not having written my review of Shatila earlier. Forgive me for I have deprived you. I’ve been a fan of Shatila for years and as such have tried just about everything here at least once. For you to accomplish this feat, you’d have to eat about 60 unique desserts ranging from traditional baklava to apple pie. Fans of tiramisu will be baffled that their slice isn’t from an Italian eatery but rather from a Middle Eastern bakery that gets it right every time. If you are a cake slice person like I am, enjoy a daily selection of at least a dozen varieties. Speaking of cake. Order your next birthday cake from here. They’re not giving it away but I assure you that you won’t be disappointed. Cake would be lonely without ice cream so you’ll want to spend a few dollars more and get to go. Pricing here is better than average. You could easily have three desserts and a coffee for around $ 10.00. What? Isn’t that normal? With so much to choose from, Shatila is easily a place you can drop some money in and that’s alright because you and your circle of friends are worth it. There is plenty of seating inside to enjoy your desserts. However, Shatila is busy all of the time. It’s clean and café like so relax and enjoy. Service here has never been anything less than exceptional. The young ladies are polite and great with suggestions.

All the desserts look wonderful. A very inviting place. Lots of room for seating. Everything is very clean. The service was something to be desired. Alot of counter help but none wanted to help customers. We waited at least 7 minutes waitng for service. When you see workers standing around talking gets to be very annoying. Not somewhere I want to go again and this was the second time have been patronized this establishment and the last.

Their cakes are so good. They’re also a special treat, they decorate them so nicely. Unlike anything I’ve ever seen. A friend recommended this to me and I got one for my mom’s birthday and she loved it. It’s a lot better than just going out to kroger and getting a cake. They’re prices aren’t bad either.

Pastries taste ok. Nothing really To talk about — bad or good. That said, go to Masri unless you want to be treated like they’re doing YOU a favour by allowing you to buy their sweets. For years Shatila was the only sweets bakery around, and I had to go here if I wanted my baklava, and I used to think I was the victim of racism(I was one of the only non-Arabs in the place many times) but after speaking to many Arabs about it, they explained that it’s the reputation of the place, I shouldn’t take it personally, the Shatila crew treates every customer inferior! Arab or otherwise! Ok so you have to be an asshole to work here, seriously. Those women on the counter all belong to the same A-hole clique! Similar to Yasmin Bakery, but Yasmin’s shop has an all boy clique following the same bi-laws as Shatila. Thank goodness there are many bakeries to choose from now :)

Pastries galore here! I was amazed when I walked in to see the enormous variety of Middle Eastern and French pastries to choose from. I seriously took forever to decide what I actually wanted. I was between a coconut slice or an almond pastry. I made up my mind on the coconut slice and it was amazing! Super moist and you can’t miss the coconut flavor. My sister and I also decided to treat ourselves to their ice cream. We each got a waffle cone. Mine with pistachio(which is to die for and has real pieces of Pistachios in it) and she got a mix of oreo and chocolate. Their ice cream is the ideal creamy texture that does not melt too quickly. The waffle cones were perfect because they were not too sweet to over power the ice cream. I will definitely be going back to this place because I have to try more of those pastries! Was surprised I was able to control myself to get only one pastry. Worth checking out for a sweet treat!

Good stuff, however I am dearbornier. …and I know my pastries, they are not the best, however the place is elegant. They should work on customer serve and the wait time. As a family owned business they have done well. I would advice they take care of the customer who got them there. They seem a bit stuck up instead of friendly.

I come to Shatila once a year to pick up boxes of Baklava for Xmas gifts for business I will say the sweets have never left me disappointed and my clients look forward to the treats My only issue is the service, its rude and disorganized If I am spending several hundred dollars on boxes of product, I expect to be paid attention to. The Arab girls behind the counter should not be gossiping and texting on there cell phones Start greeting customers properly with a welcome and a smile. If Shatila does not like me because I am American and a Christian that is unfortunate, money does not discriminate.

Crikey! I love this place. Let’s see… French pastries or middle eastern sweets. I think that the middle eastern sweets will win me over every time. The women behind the counter will help you out — they’ve let me try things that I know that I will end up loving. So happy with this place. It’s a great place to people watch also. Warning — you will be addicted. Warning — if crowds of people clammering for sweets bothers you, don’t go on a holiday evening. Tip — if you want one of the full boxes, just walk up to the register and let them know that you want a full box. Quicker than you can say«Schwarma», it’s ready for you and you can be on your way. Did I mention that I love this place?

Very rude and unfriendly service, workers look like they don’t want to be there. There is one Arab girl that’s always on the register that’s rolling her eyes and looks unhappy every time I went in there. Never a greeting or smile. The sweets are not all that, sad excuse for Arab sweets or, wonder why they’re so busy all the time. Cakes so bland and dry, ice cream is awful. Everything taste like machine oil and rosewater, smothered in crisco. Gross.

I absolutely adore this bakery! I’m huge on bakeries and visit as many as I can, and this is probably one of my favorites in the entire state. Its flashing lights instantly capture the attention of anyone passing by and the interior lights make it feel like it’s Christmas all year round. They have a wide selection of baked goods from around the world. There is a focus is on Mediterranean foods such as baklava, and I’ve never seen so many varieties of baklava in one room before. They also have solid French-style pastries and ice cream as well. My favorite part of the bakery, however, was the cakes. The cakes are impeccably decorated and taste as good as they look. Prices are extremely reasonable as well!

When you walk in, immediately take a number. The wait can be long so you don’t want to browse and then realize that you didn’t take a number and have to wait even longer for delicious, flaky, gooey baklava. I have to hide the tray from myself otherwise every time I walk by I grab a piece and then half of the tray is gone in one day. My friends, who now live out of state, ask me to take them to Shatila the moment they arrive here.

Shatila is amazing! So let me preface this review to let others know that this is only for baklava. I have had it several times and was recommended to go here from a friend. It is the best baklava I have had since visiting a Lebanese restaurant in London off Kensington St. Since that day back in 2008 I had fallen in love with baklava but could not find anything that even comes close to how good it was there. There was always too much honey or too mushy or whatever. This is not exactly as good but it sure does come very very darn close. I am not a sweets person at all and prefer savory things. When I come across a place that makes me crave the sweets I hope that tells you that it is darn good and for the price you just can’t beat it! I got the small box and filled it with all the baklava that could fit and it’s only $ 14.50. Most other places sell baklava for like $ 3 or more for a similar sized piece at Shatila. Yes I make the drive all the way out to Dearborn from Royal Oak just to get it. So there. Go out and get some.

WOW! My 1st visit here. I have never seen this big of a bakery before. Décor is very nice inside, Palm trees and gold decorations. Plenty of seats. Grab a number and wait till your number is called. It’s worth the wait! All natural. Baklava is tissue-thin pastry swabbed with rich, pure butter, enfolds crunchy fresh pistachio and a sweet sugar syrup. It’s not as sweet as I thought. I love it! Bird’s nest, fingers, half moons, and others. I didn’t know what to get so I got half of tray of different varieties of baklavas $ 14.50. And assorted cakes in another box. Each cake pieces was less than $ 2.75. The tiramisu was perfect and not as sweet. All the cake was moist and perfect amount of sweetness. And everything costed me $ 26. Wow that’s cheap! They also ship to other states. Please check online for details. I must try this again!

If there was a Unilocal Award for the«Most Overrated» it would go to Shatila. If you’re from out of town, then you’re automatically going to give them a 5 star review. Big place. Fancy. Very well put together. You’ll be impressed when you walk in, no doubt about that. But that’s the only reason why they receive 2 star over 1 star. You’re so taken back by the glitter and gold that you don’t even realize that the products they make and mediocre at best! The cakes are dry. Their bakery items are terrible. Their employees are so rude it’s unbelievable. And by all means, if possible, I know we live in Dearborn(born and raised) but wtf, none of them speak a lick of English. I speak Arabic but man, why do I get the dirty looks when you don’t understand my English? The only things shining in this place out side of the gold walls, is SOME of their ice cream selection. SOME. The more visits you make here, the more you realize that’s it’s not all that. They’re so overpriced to top things off. And take it from me, if you know anyone who works in this establishment, they’ll tell you what’s really going on. It’s not all glitter and gold!

THEYNEEDTOOPENONEINCALIFORNIA!!! I only came here because I was visiting family in the area. And I was so so so happy with this place. It’s a DESSERTHEAVEN. It’s a pretty big bakery, with lots of seating so it’s good for families. The bakery is decorated with palm trees and lights. They have an ice cream counter on one side and the bakery place on the other. There’s definitely going to be a line(there was one even though it was pouring rain outside) but it’s worth it! The classic thing(a MUST get) is baklava!!! I usually only like homemade baklava but I think Shatila’s does a great job not making it too sweet or too nutty. And because it’s fresh it doesn’t taste stale. They have boxes that are perfect to take as gifts if you’re traveling. And to take some home with you!!! I liked their ice cream as well! But ice cream is always good. It was definitely creamy and they had a nice variety of flavors but if you’re coming here, you’re coming here for more than just the ice cream. The last thing I tried were a lot of things. The pastries! Before getting into their taste, they just LOOK absolutely perfect. They’re really decorated super nicely and look so pretty! It makes you want to get them even if you don’t want to eat them. But you WILL want to them. We got a box of a different variety of them and no joke, ALL of them were good. I didn’t come across one that I didn’t like. Their whipped cream is really fluffy and light but not too sugary. The cakes are moist. The fillings are really flavorful. Just great! I wish there were a Shatila in my state because I would go there all the time. I don’t think they can go wrong with anything in this bakery. I would give the go ahead to trying anything and everything.

I’m rating this 4 starts instead of 5 for a few different reasons. Their ice cream is to die for. It is not gelato as previous posters have written. It is more like an Arabic type of creamy ice cream. The pistachio is GREAT. Very flavorful and creamy. Their Arabic pasties are terrific as well. Their other pastries such as cakes are just ok and not really worth it to me. They are generic, kind of crappy. They taste like frozen desserts.
