Decatur Handyman

Called the number from the website, was met with a hostile, «Hello.» I proceeded to ask if I had, in fact, reached the Decatur Handyman. His response, «Yeah.» So, naturally, I explained that I had a couple projects that I was uncomfortable doing myself. Again, a hostile-​sounding reponse, «Well, we’re booked until August, so…» No worries. I will not be bothering you again.

I am not sure if Steve does good work or not. He came out to do a quote on a roof that was leaking badly, plus several smaller projects. I was in a panic over the water coming into my master bath when it rains. It took 5 days to get a quote by email and by that time I had already contracted with someone else. I wrote back saying I was sorry he missed getting the roof job and asking him if he still wanted me to contact him for the other things. I’ve heard nothing back. It’s possible he is just very busy and has more jobs than he needs.

Steve and his team came over last night and fixed 10 things in my old house. He did quality work and the quality was great. Will use him again!

Because of Steve’s disgusting and completely unprofessional behavior* I will probably never trust anyone to work unsupervised in my home again. I’ve also learned why criminal background checks are completely worth the money – you might be shocked by what you find, but it’s definitely better to know.
*Includes going through my belongings, gossiping about my sexuality on the phone (as he also does in his response below), singing songs about penises (I wish I were kidding about this), smoking in my home and throwing cigarette butts off my balcony, gossiping about his other clients and things found in their homes, etc.
To add insult to injury, Steve did lousy work: in the process of ‘fixing’ my ceilings (which he left discolored and peeling) with a wet sander, he completely ruined my walls. I’ve spent a lot of time and money personally fixing the sloppy work he did and cleaning up the mess he left behind. I probably should’ve sued for damages, but I just wanted to be done with him.
I wish I could give zero stars here. Happy to share pictures with anyone who’d like to see examples of Steve’s work before considering his services.

This guy is great! Fair, honest, nice, and really good! If you need a handyman and a guy who is a jack of all trades, I’d pick him in a heartbeat! I am definitely going to call him for «round two» in the near future, and recommend him to all the neighbors! WOO-​HOO! As good as it gets :)

Steve has a great work ethic, is personable, does solid work, and has great prices. I’m not sure what else you could ask for. He’s done a couple of jobs for us now, and has most definitely gotten our permanent business. As an added plus he’s an animal lover. If you have pets that can sometimes be a real issue, inviting strangers with tools into your house who freak out your animals. Not so with Steve.

Wanted to put up some pendant lights to showcase my sweet new filament bulbs, but was worried about doing the installation/​electrical part myself.
Steve was very friendly and accommodating. Even when things ended up taking longer than expected (granted this was from something he did), he gave me an insanely good deal on the install. Recommended.

I rent my home through a rental company so I have no say when it comes to picking a handyman to work on the house. Our rental company always uses Steve (Decatur Handyman). That being said, if I did have a choice I would always give Steve my business. He is wonderful to work with, always does a thorough quality job on all repairs. He has a great sense of humor and I totally trust him to be in my home with my pets and all my stuff when I’m not around. I can’t comment on pricing or estimates since I don’t deal with those things as a renter, but judging from everything I know about Steve I would assume he is very up front and open with pricing and estimates are probably not ever far off from actual cost.
