Food & sauces were good. ½ Smoked chicken was great. The Mac & Cheese had TOOO much mozzarella or some type of cheese that’s REALLY stringy so it practically tasted like I was eating melted cheese with few pieces of pasta mixed in. The overall flavor was good, they just need to use a different type of cheese. Green beans had a hint of spiciness to it but needed salt. Overall the place is cool, not as phenomenal as people made it out to be(in my opinion). But I may go back in the summer and try something different. Try for yourself!

I went to Hodges today for the first time. I must say that the prices are very, very, very good. I had to whole turkey wings, with turnip greens, and corn bread dressing, with a banana pudding. My bill total $ 11 and ten cents. Had not I got the desert, my bill would have been around $ 7.50 for the dinner. I am sitting home(Jonesboro) stuff from the food, and I must take a insulin shot because of the pudding. Damn, the food is good.

Super sweet folks and good cheap food, even a kids’ rib plate. More than we could eat. We will come back.

I went to Hodges to get some of their fried chicken wings and barbecue chicken. However, upon arriving at the restaurant I was informed that that they only had oxtails and pork ribs. I ended up ordering a vegetable plate with collard greens, corn, macaroni and cheese, and black-eyed peas. Everything was okay. Nothing was exceptionally bad or good. Because my first encounter was good, I will be back to give it another shot.

The best soul food that I have had since living in Atlanta. The bbq ribs and the baked turkey wings were delicious. The lima beans are the best I have had.

I’ve been going to Hodges for years and it is good food. Do Not Listen to the previous reviews if you want soul food. Do Listen to the reviews if you are eating bar-b-que. I’m from Memphis so I know what good bar-b-que tastes like and I have not found a place in Georgia yet, even the beloved Fox Brother’s Bar-b-que place. Their meatloaf and fixings are good. The cabbage is hit or miss depending on who is cooking it. They are open late too, so that is always a plus.

Horrible. Ordered Rib Dinner with Yams and Mac & Cheese. Just say I was still hungry when I left. Horrible!

Food was served hot. However, I was sick less than an hour after eating there. 81 health score should have been a clue.

What happened? That’s kinda what I thought when I went to visit Hodges for the first time in maybe a decade. I was looking for some REALLY good bbq, and when I pulled up to the place, my mouth watered a little bit in anticipation of what I remembered from years past, but what I got was a «This is it» clone. I showed up around 4pm on a weekday and they had slim pickings in terms of meat… no pulled beef, very little pulled pork, one serving of ribs and some chicken. I ended up with the large rib meal, which came with a 4 boned rib and 2 sides. The ribs were simply okay, and really had more fat than i’d like, but the sauce was just as I remembered, good! For my two sides I got, Cabbage and candied yams, which both were a little flavorless. I would have loved to have tried a pulled beef sandwich, but they were again, out. In truth, I came in for a rib slab, but unfortunately it’s cash only and I didn’t have enough cash to get one, so keep that in mind when you visit. Hodges is an institution and has been around for years, unfortunately it’s not what I remembered, and whereas in the past I would’ve gone out of my way for their food, after my latest visit, I’ll only be back if i’m in the area.

A couple of weeks ago, we made two visits to this place. The first day was my first time patronizing this place, my fiancé raved about it being one of the best prior to it being under new management. We went on a Saturday, there was a line however it moved pretty quickly. The food was a step above Who’s Got Soul. The servers and cashier had decent attitudes-this it what caused us to return. A few days later we visited again, it was the same cashier and a couple of the servers were different. The mac and cheese seems to be the most popular as the pan had a couple of scoops left and it appeared to have been sitting there a few hours as it looked dry. We asked for a fresh tray and it seemed as if all hell had broken loose. The servers, who acted as if they did not want to be there along with the cashier, attitudes went further down hill stating, «Well we still have to use it, its all the same, hmmph.» They brought out a new batch and slammed it in its slot. I was really irritated at this point. The guy behind us had already told them he would take the last of the older mac and cheese which would mean they had to bring out a new batch anyway, it was far from closing time. They just kept going on and on about it. Our first thought was to just leave and spend our money elsewhere but we didn’t feel like driving further. The food was not as good as it was the last time, everything was bland. Our negative experience may have been the correlation to us being dissatisfied with the food or it may have just been that way all along. Experiences such as this make it difficult to have the strong desire to support our businesses. Needless to say we won’t return there again to subject ourselves to such ignorance.

I never in a million years thought I would spend so much time on Candler Rd. I enjoy it immensely and sometimes sing the Ludacris lyrics, «In DECATUR, where they pack that heat and ROB neighbors in the night creep, creep». We’re often welcomed by locals with such words as «light skinned people». We enjoy seeing the well dressed preacher carrying his rolling suitcase filled with Re Pent To Dday –yes spelled like that-signs.(I just know he has a Re Penthouse in the sky…) And the Piggly Wiggly offers an array of 40s unlike any other grocery store in the area. Today, I ventured into Hodges and loved every minute of it. The people are extremely friendly. The amount of food given for the price is awesome. Places like this ARE Atlanta. The homemade pepper vinegar for my turnip greens was oh so good. I’ll be back soon!

I’m not a huge Bbq person but I must have Hodges. It is the best BBQ sauce I’ve ever tasted. I always get double mac n cheese with extra sauce on my chicken and ribs. And I dip the corn muffins in the sauce as well. Everytime I come home from school in Middle GA, I gotta have some Hodges BBQ sauce.

How did I forget about Hodges? In my college days in East Atlanta, Hodges was that perfect homestyle comfort food. Heaping heavy portions of a meat and two for a handful of dollars hit the spot on quite a few nights. But they closed and I moved and I’ve been driving by for almost a year without going in. No one seems to eat pork anymore, so BBQ doesn’t cross my mind as much. Today I ventured back to the gravelly, pot-holed parking lot of Hodges, stood in the leisurely cafeteria-style line and ordered a rib plate with greens and mac-n-cheese. The sides were good(not great) — I think I should have tried those candied yams ’cause they looked better than the fake mac-n-cheese. But those ribs — SOGOOD! Smoky and moist and the BBQ sauce was sweet and tangy. Yeah, I’ll be back. If you’re on the eastside in the mood for some home cooking, check it out.

Since I was in the neighborhood, I’d stopped by Hodges to pick up some ‘cue. So what if I’d only eaten three hours earlier? I’ll eat again at some point so might as well have some ‘cue handy. I didn’t know much about this place. OK, I knew NOTHING about it except what I spotted from the street. Smoke billowing out of the roof? Check. Building looks like it needs to be condemned? Check. Full parking lot? Check. For you future BBQ proprietors out there, that’s enough to get me to turn into your parking lot. I entered and found a cafeteria line starting with meats first(pulled pork, ribs, chicken) and then some veggies. Strangely enough, I didn’t find a menu or anything stating any sort of price. The only sign I saw that mentioned any sort of monetary exchange said, «CASHONLY.» I checked my pockets; $ 9 with two those dollars consisting of change. Uh-oh. What to do? «What can I get you, Honey?» Uh-oh. The ribs look really popular but do I have enough money to cover them? Better play it safe. «Uh, just some pork.» «You want a plate or by the pound?» Dammit! «A…plate?» She grabs a styrofoam box and heaps some pork in it. Then she slathers it with sauce. She hands the styro to the next in line. «Which sides?» «Uh…mac and cheese.» «You get two.» «OK, how ’bout those greens?» «They’s turnip greens. You okay with that?» «I’m ok.» «Corn bread or white bread?» «Corn.» Damn. Wonder if I’ve got some extra change in my car seat cushions? She fills up the other two partitions with greens and M&C and hands it to the cashier… who looked more interested in her three-inch long purple manicured nails than in ringing me up. Maybe the food’s free? «You get a pork combo?» «Yes.» I clutched my money tightly, hoping not to be driven away by embarrassment. How much was this going to cost me? That was a lot of pork they piled on there. I bit my lip and would’ve broken out into a sweat had it not already been 97 degrees. The cashier looks at me and says, «Six dollars.» SCORE! I paid up without having to dig up change like some homeless dude or pathetic college student. So, how was the food? It was… ok. The meat had good flavor, but the sauce was a little too sweet for my taste. You could almost taste the brown sugar and/or molasses they probably made it with. Some would like it, but it wasn’t my bag. The mac & cheese was passable, but I’ve had better. The turnip greens were fine, but probably could’ve used more smokey flavor. Maybe they should throw some of the pork into it. So the food is strictly 2.5 stars, but I’ll bump it up to three for the value. And note to self: hit the ATM on the way home.
