Absolutely five stars. The bread of the old country. I had been cutting his beautiful big round loaves into quarters and freezing them, but then I wondered how long it would stay fresh if I did not. It’s wise to look on his website or Facebook page to see what he has. He does sell out, and as the sign on the door says, he may close and go take a nap if that happens. The baker is genial and delightful. He will let you in and have a chat and give you a sample even if he is closed. On Sunday I bought a glorious brown oat porridge loaf. I had some in the car, still warm from the oven. We had sandwiches with it. We had it with soup. On Thursday, five days later, I had the last nub in the form of French toast. When I was slicing that, it was still soft and probably would have been gnawable and good if toasted. One day more, cubed and brushed with olive oil and herbs, it would have made fantastic croutons or bruschetta, I think. Oat porridge is one of many great kinds. Sourdough. Italian white. Whee! I have not yet tried them all. I have started timing my gym trips so I can drop by Lion Tamer. These are special enough to take as a hostess gift.

Lion Tamer is run by a guy named Mr. Anchovy(apparently these are references to Monty Python), and he has a clip from Blazing Saddles on his website. I love an establishment that has a sense of humor about itself. Already I had a favorable attitude towards this bakery before setting a toe inside. This one man kitchen/storefront is no-frills(80% of the space is the kitchen, and you can’t eat there) but offers up lovingly handcrafted breads of sourdough bases(I’m pretty sure?). I was blown away by the addictive properties of the sunflower/flax seed bread. A sturdy crust reveals a way moist tangy inside dotted with way more seeds per square inch than you’d expect. The newly debuted kamut bread is also notable, made from an ancient wheat. Yum. Mr. Anchovy is pleasant and will offer samples of some of his breads. Whole loaves are ~$ 8 and half loaves are ~$ 4.50. Not super inexpensive, but you gotta pony up the dough for high-quality baked goods. Like 95% of the galaxy, I’m cutting back on the carbs, but I’ll make a special exception for Mr. Anchovy’s breads. Check out the Lion Tamer Facebook page to see what he’s baking up on a particular day.

Unquestionably the best sourdough I’ve ever had. And, I’m almost at the half century mark, and pretty experienced in things culinary. I’m addicted and luckily only live a mile or so away. Truly extraordinary product.

Stopped in here this weekend because we saw it driving by and needed some bread for dinner. I love bread. I always have, and so many places try to mask so-so bread with gimmicky fillers. Lion Tamer does not. It’s straightforward: They make bread. And it’s awesome bread! We walked away with the standard sourdough and the oat porridge. The first we ate with oil/vinegar. The second, we had with some spreads. After 2 days sitting in the bag after being cut from one edge, the bread is still soft, except for the part exposed directly to the air, which is firmer, but not hard. In other words, the loaves are big, but they keep well enough. I have just one request for them: Please make a bread-bowl sized version of your sourdough! I would love to put some clam chowder in it this winter! It would also be nice to get two smaller loaves than one big loaf sometimes. I’m very glad we found Lion Tamer, and I hope they do very well. I would love to see them get partnered up with Sawicki’s or Shield’s in Decatur to create a one-stop for meats, cheeses, and breads.

I tried the Oat Porridge Bread. Bought a half loaf and ate it all in one day, by myself(despite the fact that it is very large!). Couldn’t help myself. Great stuff. Try it. Must be the best bread in the area by far.

I am a regular customer at this bakery! bread is always fresh and delicious with a crispy crust and tender inside. Most of all we like rye bread(the other types of breads are also tasty we just used to rye bread more) and that is the best place we‘ve found so far. If you like bread you should check it out, it‘s really worth it!

Outstanding artisanal bread — by far the best in ATL. Everything we tried was terrific. I never knew that bread could have such a wonderful aftertaste. The bakeshop is hidden in a strip mall and open quirky hours. Make sure to request samples and ask Brian for an explanation of each.

The first time we visited this hidden bakery was on a Tuesday. It turned out they are closed Tuesday’s. Despite this, the doors were unlocked and the baker, Brian, was working. He welcomed us and gave us samples although he could not sell anything. The second time we went back(on a Friday) we got the Blonde and Oat Porridge loaves. They were both amazing. Brian gave us in depth descriptions of what was in them. Another note is we are on low GI diets so usually bread is bad but he does not use bleached flour(only whole grains) so we could eat all of it! Without a doubt some of the best bread in Atlanta. On the level of Star Provisions.

Although it has odd hours/days, it is understandable since it looks like it is run by only one person. The bread is more than very good; it is probably the best in Atlanta. I sampled white, blonde, rye and porridge. The time and effort that the owner takes to make each bread more than justifies the prices. If you are ever in the Emory area, you should stop by for a sample. Just make sure you go Wed-Sunday(closed Mondays and Tuesdays) in the early afternoon to make sure that he didn’t run out.

I bought my first bread yesterday at Lion Tamer Bread. What could be better than freshly baked rye bread? As you walk into the bakery you are in the middle of the kitchen and the wonderful smells of fresh bread. The owner will give you samples of the current line up of the day’s bread. I suggest that you try them all! I know that I will be back — this is a business that deserves community support!

We first had this bread at a neighbor’s dinner party several months ago and we totally blown away, so when we heard they opened a store a few weeks ago we couldn’t wait to go. The owner makes all the bread at this location, and you can see his kitchen when you walk in the door, in fact 90% of the location is kitchen. When we went in he had 4 types of bread available, each with free samples and a very articulate and scientific explanation for each. The loaf we bought was $ 7 and felt like a very fair price for the freshness and quality of the product. We will be back(bi-weekly).

Lion Tamer Bread has been making and supplying breads to a few local outlets, including Candler Park Market. I’ve had the pleasure of eating their sourdough loaf a few times and it’s wonderful. The sourdough is of the thick-skinned variety, particularly on the bottom, and very tasty. It’s good enough that I can eat it plain but it was sourdough cheese toast today. They have a new brick & mortar shop now at the intersection of Clairmont and North Decatur and I’m interested to see what other goodies they’ll have there. I noticed workers hanging a sign on the building today.
