Needles ‘n Pins is a stone’s throw from Studio S, which makes the combined shopping experience as close to perfect as you’re apt to get. A few years ago I thought of N&P as primarily a sock yarn shop — scads of sock yarn — and somewhat limited quantities(albeit nice quality) of everything else. Then Doreen expanded and things got really good. As a non-sock knitter, I especially appreciate that her inventory has grown to include all kinds of wonderful yarns in a full array of weights and fibers. She also stocks really good needles and tools, beautiful buttons, and tons of pattern books, pamphlets and sheets. Another thing I really love about Needles ‘n Pins is the abundant natural and artificial light — good in general, but particularly appreciated during the short daylight hours of winter shopping. N&P has a huge group of loyal needlewomen(haven’t seen any men thus far) who participate in classes and group knitting sessions at the shop. Everybody gets cozy and shoppers just sort of scootch around knitters in a very convivial way with lots of comments about who’s making what and who’s shopping for what. This is a VERYFRIENDLY place. I truly don’t know where Doreen gets the energy to run the shop, create all the pattern books she’s authored, and to keep up with everybody through her newsletter. Somehow, she also finds time to make beautiful gardens and to tend a flock of assorted barnyard birds. Doreen has taken Needles ‘n Pins consistently forward, making it well worth the drive from wherever you are.
