My family and I were traveling home from Montgomery today and wanted to eat lunch at a local restaurant. We found Marengo Café on the internet with only one review– which was positive. We decided to stop and were greeted by a lovely young woman. After looking over the menu, we asked to taste their chicken salad and pimento cheese, which was very good. We ordered and were treated with courtesy and enthusiasm. The food was very good and served with a smile. The owner came in and chatted with us. My 98+ year old father-in-law and he shared military history. We all thought milkshakes on the menu would be a welcomed addition to the menu. The hamburgers, roast beef and chicken salad sandwiches were excellent as was the sweet tea. All 7 of us highly recommend this little restaurant if you are driving through Demopolis, AL on Highway 80.

I am glad to find this small café in downtown Demoplis next to the library. On my most recent trip, I was determined to find a local eatery which I had not been to before, and I found this listed on Unilocal. It is unassuming, and I actually drove by it the first time because it’s in an old theater and doesn’t look like a restaurant. The sign was rather small, and I didn’t notice it till I was passing it. The staff was friendly when I entered, and greeted me. I wasn’t sure if they were open because there was no one in the restaurant, but they were so apparently much of their business is carry out from the local businesses. The menu had standard café fair, sandwiches and salads. I chose the marinated chicken sandwich and pasta salad. The sandwich was good; the chicken was marinated in something quite salty, and perhaps was brined prior to grilling. Toppings and bread seemed fresh. The pasta salad(if I remember it was bow ties) was served with fresh chopped veggies(tomato and cucumber I think) in an olive oil based marinate. Not strongly seasoned, but better than the potato chip option I think. I am glad to see this small town café right down town, and will visit again at lunch on my next trip.
