We sometimes drive up from McKinney just to see the dam and we don’t even fish! Thing is, it is so pretty up there and very photogenic. The last time we were up there I asked a fisherman what he was catching. It really sounded like he said«black bear» but I’m pretty sure he actually said striper. We haven’t gotten to see any of the indigenous Okies on our trips but I’m keeping my hopes up based on the first reviewer. :) The terrain is very rocky. Wear flat soled shoes.(Flip flops are very dangerous on the rocks).

Need a place to fish? Denison Dam is it. Park in the lot and just walk down the paved steps and over the rocks to the river and just cast away. I noticed that more people catch fish when the dam is releasing water, but even when the water stops flowing there’s plenty of fish to be caught. On my recent visit here we noticed some Okies on the Oklahoma side doing donuts in the sandy shore and trying to do some not so awesome jumps in their Suburban, bottoming out, and getting stuck in the sand every now and then. The Suburban definitely did not have four wheel drive. This was a good show because all of us Texans on our side of the river were hoot’n when they’d occasionally got stuck. Sigh… Okies. :-P Bring a cooler with your favorite canned beverages, your Unilocal koozie, relax, and enjoy fishing!
