My second home! This place is awesome! A skate shop, snacks and 3 kick butt roller derby leagues all under one roof! Men’s, women’s and even kid’s. There are games playing almost every Saturday night and practices going on every day of the week. Plus the games are Byob! Nice!

House of Quad members and regulars are pretty intense about their sport, which I’d never seen in real life before last night. I had little knowledge of roller derby beforehand, but a helpful member skated over to me and briefly explained the basics(I must have looked confused… or just unfamiliar, since it seemed as though everyone there knew each other). Anyway, it’s a fairly fast paced sport, but easy enough to understand and entertaining enough to enjoy figuring out what’s what. The venue itself is this big, bright, open, sort-of-desolate space that’s made to feel homey with big couches and love-seats circling the rink. If you aren’t there early enough to claim a couch as your own, it’s bring-your-own-chair(and BYOB as well. Plenty of people hauled in ice chests full of beer)! Outside, dudes were filling up a big smoker with brisket. They brought the meat inside and served brisket tacos at their concession stand, along with nachos, sodas, water, chips, and candy. I’m not sure if the brisket thing happens regularly, but it was gooooooooood. House of Quad was sold out last night(at their season opener), so get there early for tickets. It was packed, but fun, and there are plenty of people who are happy to explain the sport and the teams’ eccentric uniforms, or try to recruit you to join… All levels of experience welcome!

I’m really surprised that House of Quad hasn’t made it onto Unilocal yet. Roller Derby. So what comes to mind when you think of that? Tattooed chicks beating the heck out of each other on quad skates? Sounds like fun, huh? It is. And anyone can try it out. House of Quad is the home to the North Texas Derby Revolution, which is Women’s flat track roller derby. It is also the home of the Denton County Outlaws which is a Men’s flat track derby team. The NTDR has several women’s teams, a junior team, under 17(Rolling Revolution) and of course the men’s team. This is the training facility and bouts are held here as well. Practice is almost every day of the week depending on which team you are on and any information you need you can find on the website. Anyone is welcome to come and join, no experience necessary. Go to for more details. It is a really cool sport and I myself, am learning how to skate!
