Went here for lunch and loved everything! They have Ethiopian music videos playing on the tv which I thought was a great insight to their culture. The tables are cute and short with items under the glass top. My husband ordered honey wine which was too sweet for me be he liked it. His dad got Ethiopian beer which tasted similar to Negro Modelo. Both of them enjoyed the meat plate and Moja Tibes. I got a vegetarian combo plate with a bunch of stuff, the green beans and green lentils were my favorite(I don’t remember the names of what I ordered). All in all it reminded me of Indian food which I also love.

The best Ethiopian food I’ve ever had. The injera is soft and fresh. The vegetarian options are just mouth watering. Love this place !

I just went to another Ethiopian restaurant as Abyssinia is closed on Tuesdays and I was craving it. I may as well have eaten McDonalds. Seriously, if you’re craving Ethiopian on a Tuesday, cook at home and to go Abyssinia Wednesday instead. Every other place I’ve been in Denver(about 8 in 9 years now) just pales in comparison. I will never go anywhere else again!

This place was fantastic and so much fun. They have a great lunch buffet. My mom and i both enjoyed it. By the way you need to try the coffee. They roast it themselves.

Delicious, fluffy injera, generous portions, friendly staff. Felt like being back in Addis!

Friendly quick service initially. The gentleman asked if it was my first time trying Ethiopian food. I said yes, and he very politely described the little lunch buffet food items. $ 1.75 a scoop. And great tasting food. My water glass was never refilled. I asked for the check and then had to get up from the table and go find someone. The 15% off check-in on Unilocal coupon wasn’t valid on Fri(day I was there) and Sat. The meal started off great, then ended as I described. Probably won’t go back. I gave them 4 stars because the food was really good, and when I was getting service, it was really good, also.

I’m an idiot and didn’t get on the Ethiopian food train until last year. But at least I’m here now! Regardless, I’m no expert on the cuisine, I just know I like it when I eat it. It was my buddy’s birthday, and I told her I would take her anywhere she wanted to go for lunch. Boom. Abyssinia it was, without a second thought. I read the reviews online, and called ahead to have them make teff-only(gluten free) injera. They had no problem with the request and took my name for the following day. We arrived, and the layout of the place is funky. You walk in through the front door, and kind of have to step into an empty/storage room before you can close the door and even see the restaurant. Glad my friend had been here before – I might have thought they were closed or renovating. We sat down, and placed our order. They had the gluten free injera ready to go, but our food still took about 45 minutes to come out. Kind of a long time to wait, but it was worth it. My birthday friend ordered the raw kitfo – chopped and seasoned raw beef, and I got the misto, a combo of lamb and beef. The woman working made sure my friend knew what she was getting into – and believe me, she did. The food was great. We got an order of plantains to start, and they were so fresh and tasty. Once our mains finally came out, they were both on the same injera – different than other places I’ve gone, where you get your own plate of injera and can go to town. I had to monitor my intake of the sides so we could share them. I had some crazy weird tummy rolls the night I ate here, but nothing too crazy. Just crazy enough to know that you just ate a bunch of raw, chopped beef. 4 stars because it was very, very slow, and for the awkward entry into the place. Aside from that, I loved it, and I’ll be back.

I came in two weeks ago to take a friend out to dinner who was visiting from NY. I read the reviews and decided to give it a try although this was the fourth Ethiopian restaurant I’ve been to in Denver. When you walk in, the«restaurant» looks like it’s half take out, half food stand in the bottom of someone’s house. The reason for this review, however, was for the way we were treated after the food. Our waitress was visibly upset that we did not finish our food(we ate a lot but we’re done). When we told her that we were not going to take to-go boxes, she dropped the check on the table. and then proceeded to SHUTOFFALLTHELIGHTS! No, it was not closing time; it was 8:30pm. Obviously she wanted us to leave so point taken… we were sitting in the dark. There are plenty of other Ethiopian restaurants in Denver that are cleaner, nicer and have better food. Never again.

Food is very very good. Ambience is not good for dine in. Delivery or takeout is the best option to enjoy.

For the finicky child, tell them they’ll get to eat pancakes with supper and that they’ll get to eat with their hands! For the reluctant vegan child, the sampler plate gives them lots to pick from. I was so proud to see the kids digging in and trying all sorts of new tastes, but I was even prouder when they started taking about the«next time» we come.

This place is soo awesome. We had veggie sambusa, the veggie combo with injera, and spiced tea. Service was great. Atmosphere was pleasant. We didn’t eat no meat! LoL. All vegan and super tasty. It’s conveniently right on Colfax. A must try.

Went here last night with a friend who had not tried Ethiopian food before and is a vegetarian. We arrived well after 830 pm and the place was busy and smelling delicious. My friend ended up loving Ethiopian food and even considered taking back some teff flour to make injera from when he went back to his country. Really delicious food. You may have to wait for some time for the food but it is always worth the wait.

There is nothing better than Ethiopian food on a cold night. I hadn’t had Ethiopian food in a few years so I was really looking forward to trying one of Denver’s many spots. A friend of my husband recommend Abyssinia to us so that’s how we ended up here. It’s in a very old building which is kind of run down looking, so if that kind of thing bothers you, FYI. Personally I like that sort of thing as long as it’s clean(which it seemed to be). My group ordered sambusas(awesome), honey wine(very strong!), and two combos: one meat and one vegetarian. I shared the vegetarian combo with my niece. Everything was great and the injera did not disappoint. The gal who served us was very nice. If you enjoy hole in the wall joints with amazing food, you will love the experience of eating here.

I love this place. They will make you gluten free injera(bread like). The service is slow. Be patient, I have never been to a fast Ethiopian restaraunt. I have never been to an Ethiopian restaurant that was of trendy, tidy décor. Get over the décor and be patient, the food is worth it!!! Try the vegetarian sampler. Or meat sampler. The green beans are awesome. The short ribs delicious. The beef on the meat combo is my favorite and the chicken on the combo is a close second. The food is inexpensive. I love this place.

Excellent Ethiopian restaurant! All of the traditional dishes and options for veggie and meat combos. Service was very friendly, they offered suggestions when needed and a sample of honey wine. I will definitely come back next time I’m in Denver.

The food was very authentic, portion sizes and prices were good, but only receives 3 stars based on overall cleanliness and service. The chairs were dingy looking and tables consisted of TV dinner trays. The waitress seemed to speak only limited English and appeared to be the only one waiting tables. On top of all this the place did not honor the 15% off check in discount advertised under Unilocal, even after I had already checked-in online.

Daughter’s recommendation while we were walking(yes, although it’s decidedly rare, a few times in my lifetime I have been sighted walking on Colfax if only for a brief moment…) nearby. We went in during an un-busy time around 5 pm or so. Delightful friendly helpful service. We got a seven item plate and it was perfect. We’re both vegetarians so it was a vegetarian 7-item plate we ordered. I did not take notes and don’t recall the names of the dishes, but everything was delicious. Love this place so much. Definitely will be back. And did I mention the tables? They are basket tables. Colorful and picturesque just like the entire restaurant.

Wonderful Ethiopian, as good as it gets. I used to live in LA and would go to Little Ethiopia to eat all the time, and have been searching for something as good and I think I found it! Service was wonderful, we ordered Awaze Tibs(Beef) and the vegetarian plate with 6 items on it. All were flavored perfectly and not overly salty. I found my new favorite restaurant in Denver! Thanks Abyssinia!

Right around the corner, and quite affordable. My friend and I shared the meat combo plate, which was a perfect amount of food. Delicious, filling, and flavorful! If you haven’t had injera yet, be cautious. It can cause tummy pain. YUM

I love the Ethiopian restaurants along Colfax, and Abyssinia is another place that did not dissapoint. The décor is terrible, but it’s actually one of the things that makes this place charming. I’ve got a seat and a table. That’s all one needs to eat. Prices are great, and I was even luckier to get a better deal by having a groupon. They spice all their food really well. Every dish was rich without feeling overwhelming. They give ample amounts of bread to go along with your dish. They also include some veggie sides gratis to compliment the meat dishes. My husband devoured his lamb. Though I like spicy food, his lamb dish was a bit too hot for me. I had one of the beef dishes(Kolki?). It was strips of divine beef. The scent overwhelmed my senses. Just loved it. Later in the evening, my stomach was not happy with my meal, but I’ll risk the GI tract and go back!

Delicious food and outstanding service. The waiter was very friendly and helpful in accommodating our preferences and giving recommendations and was really patient with our big party. The food was delicious and so was the honey wine. They are vegetarian friendly, and gluten free if you call ahead.

We stopped in around lunch time since its in walking distance of the National Jewish Hospital. The lunch buffet is $ 1.75/item, which is a fantastic deal. I feel like we basically stole lunch! The deal really can’t be beat and if you check in with Unilocal you get an additional 10% off. My plate and belly were full. I got 4 veg items and rice and it came with injera, which a brown spongy textured bread. My favorite item was yellow with cabbage and carrots. The other 3 were various forms of lentils — not bad, but also nothing standout. My mom had the fish, the yellow cabbage ordeal, and rice — all of which she seemed to mildy enjoy, although she wasn’t fond of the injera. It’s a texture thing. Ambience is lacking(definitely not a date or business lunch place). It seemed a bit dirty and the tables were not particularly comfortable. That being said, it was fast, easy, cheap, and vegan.
