Denver is a unique city and this airport is very fitting… strange post apocalyptic art instillations, crazy underground buildings with miles of underground tunnels and oddly chosen statues. Anubis is one of the most iconic gods of ancient Egypt. Anubis is the Greek version of his name, the ancient Egyptians knew him as Anpu(or Inpu). Anubis was an ancient deity whose name appears in the oldest mastabas of the Old Kingdom and the Pyramid Texts as a guardian and protector of the dead. He was originally a god of the underworld, but became associated specifically with the embalming process and funeral rites. All things considered it makes one wonder who or why this was chosen as appropriate for an airport… definitely gives passengers traveling through the airport some fun things to look out for! While most art instillation are out for display where people can see them Denver’s artwork and cool statues are actually kinda hard to spot/take pictures of… that’s regrettable!

Was this statue moved? I thought it had been removed. Are people checking in at a nonexistent landmark?

As a frequent traveler, i appreciate the work that DIA does for the art scene both inside and out. I know some of the stuff is not everyone’s taste, but there is something for everyone. If you have some time to kill in the main terminal, visit the pedestrian walk to the A terminal… usually lots of cool art or exhibits. I haven’t been to too many domestic airports that even get close to what they do in denver.

I’ll just say it-I think people who complain about the off-the-wall statues are DIA are a little art spoiled. I come from Park City, Utah. Our airport, while nice is like any other airport in the country. Same bland everything. DIA has some awesome factors that set it apart, one of which is these awesome statue of the Egyptian deity. It’s ominous, it’s a little creepy… but it’s AWESOME. Every time I have a friend or family member come through Denver I make sure to point it out. It’s a point of pride. Go Anubis!

Adding to the dark and ominous feel of the existing airport art, today I got a glimpse of the 26-foot Egyptian God of the Dead perched right outside Departures in the Jeppessen terminal at DIA. He is a striking addition to the landscape. I mean a 3 story man-jackal isn’t exactly something you can miss! And the black and gold of the imposing piece gives it the regal feel of a King. I know some are upset that along with the devil horse we now have a god of the dead on watch, but heck I love that we get such interesting stuff to take in while catching a flight. My only real complaint is that the statue is surrounded by so much activity(people, buildings, bulldozers, etc…) that it almost gets lost. Maybe if it was perched on hill like the mustang people would get a better look. Devil horses, gods of the dead — I say keep them coming — I have never had so much to talk about when visiting an airport!
