I went to Café Chihuahua for the first time last week and it very much what I expected. While perusing other Unilocal reviews, I saw that service seemed to be inconsistent and I have to agree with this assessment. We walked in and were immediately seated, offered beverages, and brought chips and salsa. Our waitress took our order within five minutes of being seated and food came shortly thereafter. Once our food came, we were largely ignored. A family sat at the table next to us and waited at least ten minutes before even being offered drinks. We waited about 15 minutes after finishing our meal for our bill, but we were never brought it so we had to get up and ask. The restaurant has a pleasant décor: large sombreros, photos of cityscapes, and some Mexican artwork. They had also decorated for Valentine’s Day with pink and red lights and hearts throughout the restaurant. The restaurant was clean, but parts were a bit dilapidated. The menus were falling apart, the seat of our booth was torn and the would wobble back and forth each time we shifted in our seats. While service and décor matter, food is the most important part of a restaurant experience and the food at Café Chihuahua was good, typical Tex Mex with a vast menu of choices. I ordered a combination with a cheese enchilada, guacamole tostada, and a crispy chili relleno smothered in «hot» green chili. While the green chili was flavorful, I would not consider it hot by any stretch of the imagination. If you are looking for heat, try the extra hot. Portions were good for the value. My combo was $ 7.50 and while I didn’t finish it, I came close, which is a feat for me. Overall my dinner at Café Chihuahua was a good experience. Will it become my go-to Mexican restaurant? No, however I have no qualms with going back at any given time.

Made my first visit to Café Chihuahua tonight. My mind was made up. I didn’t want to like it. I wasn’t going to like it. I don’t like Chihuahuas. They’re yippy, obnoxious, unpleasant, overgrown rodents. So how could I like a restaurant bearing the name«Chihuahua»? Surprise — I like Café Chihuahua. It’s good across the board. Unilocalers are right on with an aggregate of 3.5 stars. The food is good — Tex Mex — not great, but very good Tex Mex. The chips and salsa are good — not great, but good chips and salsa. We had combinations with crispy rellenos, guacamole tostadas, enchiladas and bean burritos smothered in green chili — they were all good — not great, but very tasty. Green chili comes in your choice of mild, hot or extra hot — we had hot, and it was actually fairly mild — next time I will try the extra hot. And there will be a next time — still don’t like Chihuahuas, but remember, I do like Café Chihuahua. The dining room is pleasant — not remarkable but clean and comfortable. All staff were very gracious and friendly. Service was good — started very good and then kind of faded — finally had to chase down our server to get our bill. Value is good. From other reviews it sounds like value used to be great — not exactly great any more, but it’s still very good. Our 3 item combinations were $ 7.00 and $ 7.50(just the items — no rice and beans like many Mexican restaurants, but still ample portions). We didn’t try it but they do have a Pregnant Burrito — I’m serious — I wouldn’t joke about a Pregnant Burrito — a beef enchilada inside a bean burrito smothered in green chili with cheese, guacamole and sour cream. If I’m ever pregnant, I just might try it. As I said, Unilocalers are right on with a 3.5 aggregate rating. I would give a 3.5 if I could. Café Chihuahua is better than a 3 — but it’s not a 4. I really did like Café Chihuahua. But I still don’t like Chihuahuas!

Business closed before their hours say because«we don’t have no customers». They are supposed to be open until 9. I called to place an order for pickup at 8:10 pm and was told that. I wanted to be a customer. Normally they have very good food. I love going there. But I may have had my last visit there. Not respecting your hours is a pretty big deal, I hope the owner reads this.

The staff here are always so nice and friendly. We always sit in «Chiquita’s» section because she’s great. I love the caldo de res and the Mexican egg rolls. They are delicious! All the food is good and the portions are bigger then other restaurants. The prices are also much more reasonable then other restaurants in the neighborhood. We especially like coming for happy hour Monday-Friday as they have $ 2 beers from 2−6pm.

I don’t think I have ever encountered a more rude hostess in my life. I had called in my order for 3 of the same burrito. When I walked up to the counter, I said, «Hi I just called called in 3 burritos.» The hostess in turn said, in a somewhat accusing manner, «I only heard you say 1 burrito.» I was completely fine with the miscommunication(it“s a Sunday morning, let’s get real, I’m in no rush) I let the hostess know it’s no problem, I’ll just wait for the other 2, as I handed her my card for payment. Let me reiterate, I was completely ok with waiting the necessary time to have this miscommunication rectified. The next response I received was an eye roll(as she swiped my card) Then she told the other hostess, and I quote, «I can already tell today is going to be a bad day» … Right in front of me… I was completely at a loss for words. Needless to say, I will never be visiting this establishment again. It’s not like there is a low supply of Mexican restaurants options in South Denver.

I like how they use home made beans instead of canned. I got the chile relleno and cheese enchilada smothered in green chili. It was good.

Seriously, what a gem. My boyfriend and I were on a hunt for a solid Mexican breakfast and we definitely found what we were looking for here! The food was incredibly affordable and the service was excellent. It seemed to be a family run restaurant which always seems like a good sign to me. I ordered the huevos rancheros and my boyfriend ordered the stuffed sopapilla plate. I saw that there were empanadas in the window, I wish I had room to try them, but I was SO stuffed! We will be making a trip back!

Been here twice now with my Great Uncle. Fantastic and, at least to my very white taste buds, authentic Mexican American food. The chile relleno is perfect and egg battered, not that wonton wrapped nonsense I keep finding everywhere else in Denver. The burritos are stuffed full, the chips are fresh, the menudo fragrant and plentiful. Highly recommended

The food here is great. The service however is hit or miss. Sometime you can wait 30 – 45 mins on your food on a busy night. Their waitresses are really good or really bad. The establishment knows which waitresses have friendly service and the ones that have poor service but they refuse to get rid of the bad apples. The place has gone through expansions and upgrade. This place still needs to be remodeled, especially the restrooms. Come for the food but don’t expect much from service. Last note, stay away from the empanadas! Go down the street to a real bakery for that.

The food here is good, it can be a little hit and miss but usually it is right on. The have happy hour deals and here is the best part… Kids eat for a penny on Tuesdays!!! I even hesitate to share that information because I can always get in right away. The staff is friendly and sweet and we always have a great time here.

Might as well eat at taco bell! Their sauce tastes the exact same!!! Plus, you would save money! Their food quality is roach-coach at best.

Not bad. Had the tampequeno. It was descent, but no jalapeño, and there was only one type of salsa they had. When i travel to Mexico the salsa selection is always amazing, and even similiar restaurants in the states seem to have a good salsa selection, and here that was lacking. So as far as authenticity goes, its close. Service was ok. Overall, it was an average experience for me.

First off, I’ve been coming to this restaurant since it was a tiny hole-in-the-wall establishment with about eight tables and one television that played telenovelas round the clock. Over the years, they have remodeled and now offer a large dining room, a patio bar and patio eating along with several flat screen TVs to watch any and all sports games. One thing has not changed over the years, however, and that is the quality of the food and the cheap prices. Café Chihuahua is easily my favorite Mexican restaurant in South West Denver. They offer an extensive menu of traditional Mexican cuisine: everything from menudo and seafood soups, to a variety of burritos and tacos. No Mexican dining experience is complete without Margaritas, and they do not disappoint. Their green chili is my favorite part of any meal and they offer it in mild, hot and extra hot. Their beans are also some of the best in the neighborhood(a step above Torres). I’ve tried nearly everything on the menu(short of the hamburgers…) and I have enjoyed it all. I’m particularly fond of the combo plates, where I can get a burrito, taco, and enchilada with beans and rice for less than $ 8. Although their exterior and interior have changed over the years, the atmosphere remains much the same. It’s a great place to stop by on the weekend with your entire family or pop in early in the morning before work for a quick breakfast. It’s a family owned and run restaurant, and the servers are friendly and very accommodating. I highly recommend stoping in for breakfast. Their breakfast menu is diverse with steak and eggs, traditional breakfast burritos, omelets and even pork chops and eggs with green chili. The breakfast is more affordable than most fast food(you can have a breakfast burrito and coffee for the same price as Starbucks), and significantly more satisfying. The only downside, I would say, would be parking. Although they have a private lot, when they are busy it fills up quickly and you may have to park behind the restaurant or in the lot next door. When I moved away from Denver, I missed Chihuahua’s Mexican food the most, and it was always the first place I went out to eat when I visited home. Now that I’m back in town, you can probably find me there every Sunday afternoon with my family, enjoying some cheese enchiladas and a corona. I may be a bit biased, since I practically grew up in this restaurant, but it is one place in Denver you should not pass up!

I am always looking for good mexican and it seems like lately I find a decent or a trendy mexican restaurant but Café Chihuahua was a pleasant surprise! It was so good! The margs are delicious and so was the queso fundido and carnita burrito. The service was awesome and our food came so fast. The prices are also great! I would strongly recommend this place!
