We are thankful that we were in Denver and able to visit Dietrich’s on Saturday, December 19, 2015, the next-to-last day of this amazing and delightful business. After many years, Mr. Dietrich has decided to retire and, unfortunately, has been unable to entice a successor to apprentice as he did in Europe so many decades ago. This is a sad loss because Dietrich’s chocolates were truly world class. The tiny Washngton Park shop on East Evans had become a must to visit on our occasional trips to Denver from the East Coast. And while we have many fine chocolatiers in our home city, we know of none that combine the fine skill and simple unpretentious style of the Dietrichs’ shop. We wish Erich and Christine all happiness as they embark on this next phase of their lives. They will be missed by all of us who so enjoyed their chocolate creations.

I’m so sad that this place is closing at the end of 2015. I’ve been eating and shopping here for 20 years and it has always been a favorite. The chocolate is second to none, crafted by hand and always top quality. The breakfasts were kind of a secret, but I’m glad I had those a few times as well. I’ll miss this place for sure. Best wishes for a happy retirement; they’ve earned that and then some.

I would say from the other reviews, that breakfast here is quite good… I however only bought chocolate to go. The chocolate I paid for was a real let down, and for the 15 $ or more I spent, I am saddened. I feel really bad, giving such a low review to a mom and pop shop. I really wanted to like this place. I was so excited to finally find an artisan chocolate shop. We were having a beer across the street, and I saw Dietrich chocolates, no Marlene here. I bought a bunch of truffles, and a present of my mom. We then ate some of them with a imperial stout. The chocolate is kind of dry, maybe it has been there a little too long. Still edible –chocolate? I just I have higher expectations when I am in the market for premium chocolate. I just ate another piece now at home, and it really does not excite me. Two weeks have gone by The rest of the chocolate has been sitting on our coffee table, and neither me or my boyfriend have any interest in eating it. It kind of tastes soapy. I bought my mom chocolate covered toffee, and I am not sure i even want to send it to her.

You walk in to the smell of chocolate. Pleasing. Farther on there are 6 or 8 tables Clare to the kitchen. My breakfast, scrambled eggs and peppers, with grill hash brown with ham– nice. Cooked. Right, fluffy, hot, well made. Friendly enough. Try this place.

A long time favorite of ours for hand made dark chocolates. Small shop with lots of interesting candies, nearly all made on site by the owner Dietrich. Every Easter, Valentine’s, Christmas we come here plus quite a few times in between when we get the itch for great chocolate.

I’m not much of a chocolate fan, and See’s is, to me, the gold standard for what chocolate should taste like, so I don’t even want to review that part. I am, however, a huge fan of breakfast and Dietrich does it right. I had the eggs benedict, and they were amazing. It was everything that I’ve always imagined it should be — creamy, rich, and decadent. The croissants have a texture that’s a bit different from your standard croissant, and I don’t know if that’s because they’re homemade and baked at altitude or what, but even still, they were delightfully flaky and crisp. It’s a nice touch that they offer croissants instead of bread, and that they’re wonderfully toasted. It’s also kind of awesome that you get a piece of chocolate with every meal. The 3 of us ended up with 3 different varieties, and we had a good time trying to figure out what each of us had. Seating is extremely limited, but there was no wait at 10:30 on a Sunday morning.

I love this place for sweets! It’s a wonderful treat tucked away near DU.

A beautiful chocolate shop. You just can’t get quality like this any more. I bought some parielles and they are the best I’ve ever had, and I bought some in Europe before! I also took advantage of some seasonal candy, the Peppermint Bark is perfect. Not too much mint, plenty of chocolate. I also got a nice fruit/nut chocolate. I can’t wait to go back!

The interior is straight out of the 80s and could use an update. Meal service is slow, as others have noted. Nevertheless, I was a regular for breakfast until I was walking by one summer morning around 7 am and spotted a box left by the front door marked KEEPFROZEN. Ew. The chocolates are, however, the bomb-diggity. Great place to grab a last minute gift.

I was quite skeptical at first, mainly because this placed seemed a bit feeble, but the caramel turtle I purchased was excellent! And the man was very friendly. This place also apparently serves breakfast which seems so odd to me, but there are in fact about 4 tables inside that will hold your breakfast plate should you choose to try!

My wife and I are always in search for an off the beaten path restaurant. We were looking for a new place for breakfast and came across Dietrich’s Chocolate. It is located near DU and parking can be tough but we found parking in a quaint neighborhood with sunflower gardens and little country homes. The front of the shop looks unassuming. But as soon as you walk into the shop, you feel like you are in a little chocolate shop in Germany. Our family is German and it felt like walking into my grandparent’s home. They have an assortment of chocolates but their specialty are truffles. The poached eggs were served on homemade croissant, European dried ham and hollandaise sauce with a side of potato hash, piece of chocolate and fruit. It was surprisingly light and delicious! We bought a box of truffles and licorice. We are definitely going back!

After driving by this shop dozens of times, I finally took a minute to stop into Dietrich’s today. You walk in the door, and are enveloped with the smell of sweet, rich chocolate. They have several displays in the front room, as well as a chocolate case, and a small eating area off to the right. After selecting a few pieces from the case, the woman who helped me wrapped everything up in small clear bags with little bows. Almost feels like you traveled back in time for a few minutes when leaving the store. You come away with the feeling of ‘I’m sure this place has been like this forever, and it’s wonderful in every way’. And last but not not least, I have to say that my truffles, turtles and chocolate covered pretzels all received great reviews from myself & friends.

I learned about Dietrich’s 14 years ago when I first moved to Denver to attend college. Everyday I walked past his shop to get to school and I stopped in way more times than I probably should have once I had my first taste of his chocolate. I have since moved back and although i don’t live anywhere near Dietrich’s I manage to make regular trips across town to stock up on gifts and my own stash. I absolutely love this dark chocolate almond clusters and dark chocolate covered Bavarian Pretzels but everything I have sampled has been top quality. For such a small space there is a huge variety of chocolate and it’s very affordable. I love supporting small businesses and am happy to have such a brilliant craftsman to support.

Hidden gem with really good food but has strong competition with Jelly U Café now. Get the hashbrowns if you go they’re really tastey. The service is really slow because the owners are rather old but it’s worth the wait!

A wonderful little gem of a fine chocolate store in Denver. Wonderful German chocolates, including candy like Angel Food! If you get their breakfast each breakfast comes with a piece of their chocolate… yum! I just wish that on their website they had listed all the different kinds of truffles and chocolates they have. I no longer live in Colorado and want to order some.

The owner Erich Dietrich learned and practiced his craft under a master chocolatier in Germany and it shows ! He was so gracious during our visit and truly knows his stuff. His shop is adorable and the chocolates amazing ! The chocolates were better than some of the big names your probably paying triple the price for ! What he does is truly becoming a lost art in this age of mass production !

Oh the smell… you had me at the first whiff! This place smells like a little piece of heaven. I went in yesterday to buy some chocolates for an Army friend in Germany. As soon as I opened the flimsy glass door, the smell almost over powered me. Just being in the shop makes me feel safe, calm and cared for. Anyways, I was buying a coupla hand-made lollypops with cute holiday expressions. I also bought boxes of their famous french mints. They are always trying something new there, so I tried there latest batch of carmel covered bacon dipped in milk chocolate with a little kosher salt on top. YUM! I also eyed about four different candies. from Europe that they carry that I would try at another time. Of course, I couldn’t bear to leave without a bag of the best chocolate covered raisins(ANYWHERE)! Damn– I just love any reason to go to this place. (P.S. During the summer they are closed on Mondays).
