Downtown Denver YMCA

I cannot say enough positive things about the Y. The staff is consistently friendly, knowledgable, and willing to offer any help or assistance (even with first aid). The equipment is no frills but there are plenty of cardio machines and the machines are well maintained and versatile; I have yet to want for anything. (Plus it’s very clean — members are generally great about cleaning up after themselves) The classes are excellent and the amenities are impressive: towels are available everywhere, the locker room is massive and includes a sauna, hairdryers, curling irons, and a iron for clothing. Best of all, there’s no real contract involved and is month-​to-​month. Give it a shot — I’m happier with the Y than 24 hour fitness for a cheaper cost!

You guys have the worst weekend hours I have ever seen. I am never able to go to the gym on the weekends at all. I have a job and a career and I end up having to work. The worst problem is that you guys don’t even open early on the weekends so that I can get in there before work. You are literally closed every hour that I am at work and have no ability to make it there. Closing your doors at 6 p.m. is an extreme inconvenience especially for a gym that costs damn near $ 50 a month. You guys desperately need to reconsider keeping your establishment open past 6 p.m.. It is ridiculous. I will never recommend you to anyone else, at least until you change your hours of operations on the weekend

This gym is very close to my office and is affordable. That is why I go. It is clean as well. However, the weight lifting room is very small and inadequate. You barely have room to deadlift. There is only one squat rack. The whole situation is very tight. Some of the people that go there are rude. They police the place because they are older and have been there forever. It is a terrible free weight experience. You don’t even know what size barbell you are lifting because the stickers on them are gone. I am just waiting for something better to be found.

I work a block away so I was really hoping for a positive experiance. I went to check it out and I’d have to say it wasn’t the nicest gym I’ve been to. The number 1 complaint I’d have would be the showers. Being that I was going to use this durning my lunch hours I wanted to make sure they had ok showers. If you enjoyed the high school gym showers this is for you. No stalls, single room with shower heads.

I want to love the YMCA wholeheartedly. I do. They provide a gym with a noble mission, and they deserve all the laurels that they receive for it. However, I just can’t seem to love everything about it. Yes, the location is spectacular, and the view from the second story of the YMCA of Lincoln Avenue and some of the other nearby buildings is urban, delightful, and far from routine. The staff is sweet and helpful, and the patrons are normal, everyday people looking to exercise, not hook up like in other gyms. They have quite an array of cardio machines as well, as other posters have mentioned. The locker rooms, while not country club quality, are clean and well-​maintained, especially for an old building. They have even recently painted the place, giving it a healthy, new look. Seemingly, I should want to belong to it for the remainder of my time in Denver. But I can’t because I love lifting free weights, and unfortunately, I’ve been to some hotels armed with weight rooms the same size and same amount of equipment, so even upon a visit with only a few people lifting, there simply is not enough space or apparati. I have tried to ignore it for the past few years, thinking that it would somehow get better, but alas, not atlas, it has not. In fact, it seems the race for equipment is greater than ever, which while my membership is not necessarily an over-​the-​top expensive, I have to weigh my options. And I think that in the long run, I’m just too bent out of shape over it for it to be a good fit for me.

I LOVE this Y! The location is perfect, it has a dedicated parking lot a block away, there’s never a wait for the machines, towels!, the atmosphere is not douchey, i mean, i could go on forever. It’s definitely not the most upscale gym, but it gets the job done in a no frills relaxed way. I also like how there are other Y’s around the city. Although I dont like having to pay $ 5 to go to the Glenndale Y, I go to that location sometimes just because it’s nicer and there’s never anyone there. Overall, love the Y!

Convenient if you’re living in or around downtown, but I didn’t find that it met my expectations based on other YMCA’s I’ve frequented.
It has a wealth of cardio equipment, and most in decent shape, but I was most underwhelmed by the small weight training areas. Many of the weights and machines are older and aren’t in the best shape. Also, what’s up with having two separate areas for the machines?
Overall, I don’t feel this is quite up to par with other YMCA’s I’ve been to. However, if you are seeking something affordable, and can look past a few blemishes, this may be the place for you.

Great facility for people living near downtown.

Best YMCA I’ve been to other than the best YMCA on Town Lake in Austin, TX. Will definitely be returning every time I roll through Denver.

I mostly enjoy this facility’s yoga classes!
For the past few years, I have attended yoga classes fairly regularly during the weekdays and here is my breakdown:
Monday — Kath’s class is a great way to begin the week. She is chill and open to work on your requests accommodating all levels of experience. She is a breath of fresh air on a rough Monday.
Tuesday — Terry is an older teacher who is great and calming, while impressive as he does all of the poses along with the class. This one is usually quite full. It is challenging and relaxing, as it should be.
Wednesday — Susan likes to balance physical challenges with her yoga classes. She knows everyone in each class, and will introduce herself if you are new. She is very knowledgeable and will encourage you to experience yoga with other teachers. It is a great mid-​week workout and you leave feeling strong.
Thursday — Another great Kath class where she is open to what to work on. Kath is calming and motivational and the Thursday class helps you to prepare for the end of the week.
Friday — A Chakra yoga class where some restorative, low impact and deeply relaxing yoga is practiced. The perfect way to calm your mind and close out the work week. (Susan also teaches a more challenging yoga class, earlier in the day if that is your style. But, I prefer the chill class personally)
Christine is a lovely substitute teacher who combines essential oils, positive self talk and a variety of techniques. I enjoy her energy and she offers a great perspective. She also teaches on Monday evenings.
They have a full workout class schedule at the front desk that includes early morning classes, sports conditioning and more. A very diverse group attends these classes and every employee here is approachable and knowledgeable. They have a nice steam room, locker room and sauna but the showers could use some remodeling. The convenience of this location and the consistent quality of the classes keep me coming back!

Compared to the Southwest branch, this Y is less family oriented and better geared towards office people and adults without kids, which I prefer. It’s cleaner, with a lot more amenities and lockers. The towels and magazines are always well stocked. People are more courteous (you can tell by the simple fact that machines are wiped down and less «sticky»). I just wish they have a dedicated parking!

I’ve been a member at this specific YMCA for 3+ years now. I use the facility over the lunch hour 4 days per week since I work downtown and live up north.
I love this Y! I love the atmosphere. I love the bright, natural light that is in the main workout area due to the big windows and the building being on a corner. I love that the cardio machines have their own personal televisions. I appreciate that the staff is friendly and always says hello and goodbye. I love the Sports Conditioning classes on Tuesdays at noon and Thursdays at 12:15. It’s a tough class, but you will see results! The instructor pushes you while at the same time, he supervises everyone to ensure we are performing the exercises safely with proper form. I really love the camaraderie that comes with being a «regular» at this class.
I highly recommend this YMCA. I saw on other reviews that people complained about the trainers being loud and encouraging bad behavior from their clients… I have never once seen that. Ever. I’ve been a loyal member of this gym for over 3 years with literally no complaints.
And for those who complain that they think the cost of membership is high… maybe those people should shop around to other gyms in the downtown area. The membership dues at this Y are comparable or cheaper than other downtown gyms. Space is not cheap in downtown Denver, thus, your membership may be a bit higher than if you belonged to a gym that was not conveniently located downtown.

Use to be a great gym, but the knucklehead trainers have taken over. The trainers are loud and obnixous and encourage bad behavior from their clients. I have seen them take up 4 machines during the rush hour at lunch, they have people running up and down the narrow spaces in the gym. It is one thing to have a personal trainer, it is another to try to run a boot camp in the middle of a busy gym. Also they have way to little open space, tons of equipment that no one uses, just poor space management. However, I will say the rest of the staff is great, very friendly.

The Denver Downtown YMCA is very spotty in regards to it being a good Gym to sign up for or not. First off all the membership is $ 50.00 a month; allow me to tell you what it is that you get for $ 50 a month:
State of the art equipment, however most of it is patched up with electrical tape due to the fact that it is falling apart. I also cannot think of a day that I have gone to the gym and at least 2 – 3 of their machines were out of order.
Aside from the staff not seeming to care about the equipment the members also seem to have an equally hard time caring about the equipment. Members will abuse the machines and push them beyond their limit. Let’s not forget the fact that you have a bunch of meat heads there that slam the weight machines down as hard as they can. This will overall hurt the longevity of the equipment and I am assuming in the long run drive up membership prices. Members also seem to have the hardest time cleaning the machines after use, they are not immune from sweating frankly it was gross.
The staff most of the time is very unfriendly not saying hello or goodbye as you come and leave. They seem to be lacking basic customer service skills.
They could never get my billing right, they would not charge me on the days they said they would, and they would also tell me I had not paid when I had, it withdraws automatically… this would cause me at times to take an additional 30 minutes with the staff to figure out why this was, each time I was not at fault it was their systems.
Canceling your membership will be no easy task. I explained to them that I would not be able to make it down to cancel due to work conflicts. They told me to email Thom Hartman to do this since I could not make it down. I sent them an email and was still charged $ 50.00 for the month. I called to make sure my membership was cancelled, lucky me, Thom was the one who answered the phone. He told me the email must have gone to his spam folder and that I should just come down to cancel my membership. I told him I would not be able to, so he decided to pry into my personal life and ask why… I told him my work would not allow me to take the time off. He did not bother to cancel me right then and there or check his spam folder. He simply told me to try and make it down. I told him I would prefer to email as I had already given him my reasons, he said ok and our call ended. I emailed Thom again on May 28^th politely stating that I would like to cancel my membership and explaining my private and personal reasons to him. I did not hear back from Thom Hartman. I then had to send a less polite email threatening to do what I am doing now to complain. I expressed to Thom that I felt this was poor customer service. On June 3^rd I finally received an email stating my membership was cancelled, not so much as a sorry or we appreciated your membership… just a very rude «this has been taken care of.»
I understand some folks may have positive experiences with this gym but I have not. I hope this helps someone on the fence of joining make an educated decision.

This is the second time that I’ve been a member of a YMCA. I chose to join the one here after moving from Louisville, KY as I really liked the branch I went to there, and this one is close to my apartment and is affordable.
This branch holds up to the Louisville one fairly well. It’s clean, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and there’s solid amount of machines and free weights. Unlike Louisville however, there is no pool and there aren’t any late night classes. I need that with my work proximity and schedule.
Overall, this a solid gym that partly suits my needs. I am very glad that it is so close and affordable, but in the long term I’ll likely look elsewhere.
I got a «bawler» badge for checking in here. Apparently this has something to do with parenting. I don’t get it as I’ve never seen a child here. Perhaps that’s because I work out at night?

I hesitate to give any gym 5 stars (it seems so contradictory!), but I’ve been going here for a little over a year and I’ve become quite fond of it.
Favorite things:
— Almost NEVER a wait for machines. There has been once or twice (in a year!) that I haven’t been able to walk right onto a cardio machine, and the wait was only a couple minutes.
— Great locker rooms. They’re well-​stocked (the ladies room has blow-​dryers, straighteners, curling irons, q-​tips, mouthwash etc.) and well laid out. I rent a locker so I don’t have to lug my sneakers every day, and it’s very reasonably priced.
— Indoor bike rack! That alone is worth 5-​stars to me.
— Friendly and fun staff and lots of classes offered.
But the real selling point? The location for the cost. You will never find anything in downtown for a fraction of this price. It’s always busier at lunch than after work (DEFINITELY caters to downtown workers), but still never crowded.

What I’m about to say may shock some of you.
I hate yoga.
Whew. There, I said it. I didn’t start out hating it, but after a year and a half with little to no progress resulting in me just getting angry instead of still during a session, I decided that other methods of exercise would be better for me, so I started checking out gyms in my neck of the woods.
Unfortunately, where I live has a proliferation of boutique gyms that cost an arm and a leg each month and I just can’t afford that level of opulence in a place where, quite frankly, I’m going to end up being sweaty and splotchy and an overall mess.
Enter in the downtown YMCA. While the monthly rate is still higher than, say, 24 hour fitness, $ 70 gets me access to a pretty state of the art gym and weight room, plus a TON of fitness classes. Some of which are not yoga.
I was really impressed with this facility and how great the amenities are. This is NOT the Y I had in mind when I first went here to check it out. This is an incredible place, filled with nice, genuine people and I never feel self-​conscious because there is just about every body type and fitness level there.
I’m excited to go work out now, because I know I’ll never have to get angry at myself for not being able to get Crow Pose right, even after all these years.

After being to many many YMCAs in the country, I can safely assert that this is one of the best. It’s a very large facility that offers great exercise equipment and classes.
The locker rooms are useful. I love the access to a hair dryer and other toiletries so I don’t have to carry them in my bag, especially since I walked or biked here.
If I moved to Denver, I would definitely become a member here.

Location! Friendliness! Location! Equipment! Location! Classes! Location! Unpretentious! Location!
Talk about a diverse clientele: downtown professionals, seniors, cap hill locals — interesting people left and right! Some darn good looking ones too ;-) Sometimes there might be a sketchy character but c’mon — it’s the middle of the city!
Every now and then you get your meat heads who like gazing in the mirror more than anything else but that’s true of any gym. More often than not the atmosphere is light, urban and conducive with getting in a good work out!
While there is no longer a pool the Metropolitan Y is still excellent! I can’t sing higher praises for the awesome staff and fitness instructors. Yoga, spinning, step, zumba classes available… extreme fitness, outdoor fitness, all kinds of fitness running around this place!
Want more? Plenty of lockers, sauna, steam room, day care for the kiddies in the summer, towels, great hours!

Steamroom + Sauna + Treadmills with TVs = Win.
