Just to correct a common misconception in the reviews here – the Esquire is not independently owned. It is one location of the Landmark Theatres chain (owned by Mark Cuban), which has about 300 screens across the country.
I go to the Esquire only if a movie isn’t showing anywhere else (which does happen – I like their programming). The downstairs theater is all right, but I’ve vowed never to see a movie in the upstairs converted balcony again. I like feeling immersed in a movie, and up there, it’s like I’m lording over the screen, even in the front row. Just a weird, unsatisfying experience.
But I do give them props for having 2:00 matinees on weekdays, unlike the Mayan.

This is a small theater with excellent customer service! It’s independently owned, and this gives it a charming touch.
The staff is truly there to make sure you have a wonderful experience. The manager personally introduced herself to the crowd before the movie to let us know that she was available at any time for questions or concerns. She also gave us a little background information on the movie we were about to watch — Brooklyn! It’s refreshing that the manager has done research on the film before they play it in the theater.
The popcorn is delicious and is actually a little cheaper than at a standard cinema theater. Although the movie tickets are a little more expensive than a standard theater, the staff make it worth the extra few dollars with their excellent customer service.

E = excellent customer service, manager included!
S = simplicity at it’s finest — movies, popcorn and fun.
Q = quirky but very unique feel ambiance !
I = independent & big Hollywood movies playing consistently — we saw Brooklyn!
R = really sweet manager — who introduced herself to the entire movie crowd, gave us history of the theater and was amazingly accommodating to all by offering volume levels, heat temps and more!
E = extremely unique and fun experience — unlike any other!
Thank you Esquire for a memorable and fun evening with the girls. I shall boycott all corporate theaters from now on! ha :)

Yes, they get films that other theaters don’t seem to bid on. The nostalgia is there for an older neighborhood theater. The main level is the old fashioned slightly inclined seating; stadium seating in the newer or remodeled theaters is a major improvement over incline seating. The popcorn still is offered with real butter– that sure makes up for some of the drawbacks. One major complaint, they always seem understaffed. To have only one person selling tickets who also is the only person operating the concession stand is ridiculous.

I love the movies, but the seats are broken and uncomfortable. and not just a little. Please invest in some proper seating. My friends won’t go to that theatre with me because it is so uncomfortable.

Troy and Myra and the rest of the staff at the Esquire went way above and beyond for our private event. I couldn’t say enough good things about this place. If you enjoy pina coladas, they won’t have those… but they won’t leave you in the pouring rain.
I’m definitely coming back for some of their throwback flicks and would highly recommend using this place for another private event. Cheers!

Love, love this place! Nice, cozy theatre with some of the best hot, buttered popcorn I’ve ever had. This little diamond in the rough needs to stay just the way it is. Keep bringing in those films that the big box theaters won’t.

Old School theater serving up offbeat Indie films and late night retro fun a la «Rocky Horror” — the seats are a bit tight, but your film brain will thank you for serving it something other than a Marvel hero!
Two small theaters inside, great concessions and plenty of yummy restaurants nearby. Do not park at Safeway — they tow!

This theater is old, yet charming. You can tell it’s been around a while, and as many have noted, the seats are not the most comfortable. But, I can personally get over and look past that.
We live about a block away, and have enjoyed many a movie here. It’s an independently operated theater, and I love that there are no ads. Plus, I find it incredibly endearing that an awkward manager/soul has to get up in front of the audience and ask them to turn off phones, be respectful, etc. They want to please, and it’s obvious. From the variety of films here (including Rocky Horror Picture Show one weekend a month), to the quaint vibe, to the loads of butter they put on the popcorn, I love it.

The Esquire has been around for a long, long time. it is an independent theatre, which I fully support. You must purchase tickets at the box office. It kind of has an old movie theatre feel.
While I love the great independent movies they show, I truly despise the seats. I know it’s an independent theatre, but the seats are seriously uncomfortable. The cinema has an upstairs and a downstairs theatre. Atmosphere is cool and different. Pretty nice selection of snack foods, along with vegan cookies, teas, fountain sodas, and good buttery popcorn.

Love the Landmark theaters, and the movies they show. Have avoided the Esquire for about a year due to the rude manager not allowing me to wait in an empty lobby on a sweltering day when I was about to pass out in the noonday sun. Gave them «another chance» yesterday. Was first in line outside waiting patiently for 15 minutes before their 1 p.m. opening time. Had an elderly person with dementia with me who has difficulty walking, and we needed to use the bathroom. 1 p.m. rolls around, and they don’t open the doors. Employee finally comes to the door, and tells us it will be another 10 minutes. I said we needed to use the bathroom badly. He asked his manager to make an exception — the answer was «No!» Probably the same rude manager as a year ago. We left and will not be back.

This is one of my favorite places to catch a movie in Denver.
Price: whatever. I’ve resigned myself to the mercy of whoever decides the cost of movies these days. I’m over it but I love movies so I guess I’m a sucker.
Location: Best Ever! Walkable from anywhere in Cap Hill!
Charm: Off da charts.
Movie Options: Exceptional! Any time a movie comes out that I really want to see, they got it! They also do midnight movies that are not new releases. All kinds of movies at midnight that change all the time!
There are 2 theatres inside I think. One big one downstairs and one smaller one upstairs. Seats are small and close together but I think people should just get over that. Yeah, I’m talking to you!
No but really, this place is the best. Go there everyday so it never closes! That’s all.

Esquire is the best! I’m especially fond of their midnight screening. On the last Friday of every month, they screen Rocky Horror, which is a blast. They tend to show a well-curated selection of films. Since it’s a Landmark theater, Esquire is well taken care of. They tend to show independent films that are less mainstream than those being played at other local theaters. I’m a huge Esquire fan. I’m so glad that we have such a fabulous local theater!

Good small independent movie theater near where I live. The theater was nice and cozy. Although they only had one cashier, she was super fast and barely had to wait in line for my matinée show. Ticket prices were fair and love that they were playing two movies that were up for many awards rather than some weird indy film. Will def be coming back!

Movie choices — 5 stars.
Friendly manager asking the crowd to turn off phones instead of using an ad to do so — 5 stars.
No ads before the movie — 5 stars.
Nice folks at the ticket counter and concession — 5 stars.
Comfort level of upstairs theater — wipes all of those stars out. My last visit was 10 years ago and all I remembered from that was how hot and uncomfortable I was during the movie. Don’t remember the movie. Fast-forward to 2014, and nothing has changed. Seat cushions are still uncomfortable and too close to the row in front. Would be better to just sit down on the floor. I suppose you could say this is part of its «charm» but only if you’re in to selfass-mutilation.

You will need:
— 1 part Sweet Location (intersection of best one-ways in the city are preferred)
— 3 parts High Quality Indie Films
— 1 part Best Silly/Ironic/Cult/So Bad Its Good Films
— 1 part Cool Manager (must say «Hello» and «Thanks» and «Have a Good Night» to everyone. E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E.
— 1 part Great Place to Meet Interesting People
— 2 parts Old School Charm
— 1 part Uncomfortable Old School Seats (sorry, sometimes the past isn’t as comfortable as we remember)
Combine in a friendly and genuine atmosphere and let rest. Repeat: Do not disturb or modify in any way — it will fall like a soufflé in an earthquake. Enjoy!
Allergies Notice: Upon visiting, you will feel gross and guilty for paying money to the Arms of Hollywood Chain Theater you go to once or twice a year for that guilty pleasure blockbuster thing we all have but pretend not to.

Standing outside thirty minutes after the official start of an movie and they still have not opened the doors. Plus they don’t serve alcohol. That says all you need to know.
I have been to theatres all over the country and never had this problem. Maybe they should learn what a clock and show time is. :/

Real butter is good, if you actually buy popcorn.

EXPENSIVE. Small. Crowded. Temperature is always weird, too cold or too warm. The employees seem to genuinely want to make your experience great, but at $ 11 a ticket I’d rather go to the regular theater for a dollar more and have a more comfortable experience.

I love the Esquire. The movie selection is simply great, the small theater laid back and their popcorn and seasonings add to the event. Mmmm jalapeño popcorn!
On Friday and Saturday evenings they play Rocky Horror and other cult movies so grab your friends and bring your props!
