My girlfriend and I have both been getting our hair cut at Lilac Salon for 2 – 3 years now. We are not Asian, but we would not trust anyone else with our hair. Winston has an expert hand.

Winston does a great job working with Asian hair. I’ve been coming here for years now and I get a great haircut here every time. His prices are more than reasonable, he recently increased his male haircut price to $ 20, which is very fair.
You do need to make a reservation prior to coming in so be prepared to do that but he’s very accommodating so I generally do not have any issues getting in for a haircut even on busy weekend days.

Since there are only male reviews so far for this salon, I’ll speak up for the ladies. I’m really happy with the haircut I got from Winston. My hair is thick, heavy and sometimes starts to feel like it’s eating my head. Seriously, sometimes it becomes apparent that it’s a separate, willful creature that lives symbiotically on my head. I needed someone who would be able to thin, layer, and shape my hair so that it would look, for lack of a better word, normal. Winston did it all!
My appointment included a pre-​cut wash. I told him what I wanted (an angled bob with some thinning/​volume-​reduction), and he did it all quickly, carefully, and really well! (I’ve now been to enough places to kind of tell when someone is pulling out all the stops on my hair and when they’re skipping something important.) My wash, cut, and blow-​dry came to less than $ 30 before tip and was way better than any haircut I’ve gotten at «fancier» salons that charge $ 50+for their name or ambiance. I’ve been getting plenty of compliments on my new ‘do, so I know I’m not the only one who thinks they did a great job!
I think the shop is just the right size, since it seems like Winston only works on one person at a time. It’s 100% a family business, with Winston’s wife helping wash and dry hair and both of them taking turns hanging out with their young (and well-​behaved) son. The salon is slightly off the beaten path (no longer on S. Federal), but the plus side is that parking is super easy. I am really happy to have finally found a hairdresser to whom I want to returnt!

This is the best place for Asian hair. The guy who does it is from china, so he’s straight up legit about knowing how Asian hair behaves and knows how to cut it.
His English is good and his prices are really great as well.
I drive 35 minutes to see him, and he’s definitely worth the drive.

The man who runs this place, Winson, is a very nice guy and may be one of the best at cutting Asian hair. He is very precise and will accommodate requests while being realistic about how you will look afterwards. I have been getting my hair cut here for a while and I have always loved how I look afterwards.
The business is very homey, not high end, but I appreciate that. Winson is a family man who runs it with his wife. He may be very quiet but if you start chatting with him you’ll find he’s a very amicable guy.

I’ve been coming here to get my haircut for a year now. I’m Chinese and have had some very bad experiences with hair stylists who don’t know how to cut Asian hair (my favorite was the guy who thought he could style my hair like Hugh Grant’s). Winson is fantastic and has given me great haircuts from my first visit, all for a very reasonable price. He’s quiet but listens to requests and remembers what I like. This is a small family business run by very nice people with a loyal clientelle. Winson’s wife runs the register and helps with hair rinsing and treatments. Their toddler son is often wandering around. If you’re looking for something slicker or for a chatty hair stylist, this probably isn’t your place.
Lilac Salon has just moved from Federal to their new location a couple of miles away on S Sheridan. It’s a smaller brand new salon inside a white house, so it’s easy to miss the sign the first time. I’m glad that I found a hair stylist I can count on.
