Denver Open Media (DOM) is a jewel hidden in the heart of Denver. Although they host the public access stations in Denver, they are so much more than that. You should check out their web page and see what Tony has to say about their mission, but I’ll give you a quick taste of what I experienced.
An organization that I help out was awarded a grant that allowed them to take video production classes and also gave them access to equipment, studio time and computers for editing video. I was fortunate enough to get to take the classes and help produce a few videos.
The classes were pretty basic, but they covered enough to get you comfortable with the equipment and the concepts needed to start filming. The instructors (thank you Ann and Deb!) were all excellent and really seem to be teaching from experience, not just something they read in a book.
Everyone at DOM, from staff members to interns, are very pleasant to be around and full of helpful information. If you’ve got a question about video, they’ll answer it or find someone who can. They also like to have a good time, so if you’re ever around there on a First Friday, stop in and check it out. It’s always a good party and there’s usually live music.
Whether you need to rent some video equipment for location filming, need a studio where you can film a show for TV or just need a powerful computer with Final Cut Pro to edit some video, DOM has you covered.

This is the coolest thing almost no one knows about. Need a big camera and cords and a mic? Rent it from them! Want to learn all about TV production, but don’t want to enroll in school? They can help you with that too!
They partnered with the Denver Film Series for a documentary series a couple years ago and broadcast each of the discussions afterward on one of their three channels. It was invigorating to hang out in such a creative, communal and quirky TV studio and an experience I won’t soon forget.

Denver Open Media is a super cool non-​profit, community television idea. They essentially offer everything from equipment rental to how-​to classes and show all local programing on their 3 channels and the Internet.
From what I understand viewers get to vote on content and so the content that has more votes gets moved to a different station. Videos get posted to Channel 56 first, based on the creator’s chosen theme block. Then, depending on the number of votes received, competition within theme block, and freshness it will be scheduled on Channel 57.
DOM also hosts first Fridays at their space with live music most of the time. It’s a cool place to check out. And if you are an aspiring movie maker, actor or anyone else in the field you should consider posting your stuff with them.
