Ms. K. and I stopped in here last summer while my sister was watching salt water taffy get pulled down the street(cool stuff, btw). I have been to Depoe Bay hundreds of time over my life and been to most of the shops on the strip right by the bay, but somehow had missed this store. It *is* at the far end of the main strip of businesses, so perhaps I just never made it that far. I love book stores. I can spend hours in them. I like used book stores. Assuming they have some good stuff. Some used book stores seem only to stock used romance novels and W.E.B. Griffin et al., etc.(not that there’s anything wrong with that). However, Depoe Bay Rare Book has a great collection of a wide variety of collectible books. Up front, it should be noted that there are not a LOT of books here. However, the ones they have are very cool, and they seem to cover a wide variety of genres. As of last July, they have a spectacular selection of various formats of Shakespeare plays. Those that follow my reviews my be aware that the Bard and his works are a great passion of mine. The books of plays they have here are amazing. I had to focus on keeping my mouth shut so as not to get drool on the century old books. The particular book that sticks out in my mind and that I wish I would have had the money to buy was an illustrated version of The Tempest(which as an aside is my favorite play). This is not the typical watercolor illustrations ever 50 pages. It had an illustration for damn near every scene in the play in beautiful form with each one covered by a tissue/dust sheet/page. Gorgeous. It was $ 300. I didn’t buy it. I regret it. If it is still there this year when I go back(later this month), I will be very, very hard pressed not to purchase it(it may require some physical force on the part of Ms. K.). It would be an amazing addition to anyone’s collection. The woman who was there while we were there(possibly the owner?) was not the most outgoing, social, friendly person I have ever met. But I guess if I had to fight tourists off all day long in order to protect my $_00.00 books, I might be a little wary as well. All in all, definitely worth a stop in, even if just to peruse and not to buy. However, if rare, cool books are your thing, come prepared to be very, very tempted to spend a significant chunk of change.
