My daughter and I had lunch there on a Saturday and were pleasantly surprised at the quality and cleanliness of this place. Best Unagi I have ever had. Will definitely be going back Ginny H

Food was OK, did not try sushi/sashimi yet. Service was interesting. It was a slow time of day, early noonish on Saturday. Hibachi steak lunch was decent, 10.95 I think, steak wasn’t tender at medium. Fried rice was fresh and good as was salad with ginger. Vegetables not my favorite. Will try again. I am a fan of Masa though, so idk, haven’t been there at night, plus need to try more things.

Very good sushi in a nicely appointed restaurant. We had crab Rangoon(ok, no real discernible seafood flavor, but fresh, hot and cream cheesy), spider roll(very good) and sashimi deluxe with a nice assortment of fresh fish. Odd that you get soup OR salad, but otherwise comparable in price, portions, etc to some other local establishments. Very friendly waitress service at sushi bar; shabby restrooms are the only negative.

What a surprise, we had a bunch of different rolls and they were all hand rolled and were fantastic. The Goyza was really great too didn’t taste frozen! We thought we would give it a try and we will be back!

Don’t order take out over the phone — they will mess it up. We ordered an L02 and D03. We were charged $ 39. The entire order was wrong. There were no Shumai or California Rolls which were supposed to come with the L02. There was shrimp which we didn’t order. I tried to use the online ordering but it doesn’t seem to be working. My husband brought the food back and they said that they don’t have the lunch menu on Sunday’s which is what We ordered from. There isn’t anything that I saw on the website that indicated they didn’t serve from the lunch menu. It would have been nice if they would have told me that when I called. They weren’t able to put the money back on our credit card so they gave him a gift card. I think that’s a load of crap. This is the first time that we ordered from Sumo Sushi and this isn’t a great first impression. maybe I’ll give the gift card to my son. I don’t plan on going there again. I wish I could give zero stars.

Review in context for Derry NH Very good food and drink. Sushi is solid. Chinese is as well. Good start to a creative cocktail menu and more than one choice for cold sake. Staff is very warm and welcoming. What else can you ask for in a strip mall in Derry? Nothing.

Tried it for lunch after seeing it advertised in the paper. We were the only customers on a Friday. Too bad because the sushi and sashimi were wonderful. We sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed watching put meal being made. The fish was very fresh and yummy. The presentation was beautiful. We will be back.

Derry finally has the sushi place it deserves. I visited Sumo about a week ago on a whim and a prayer. It occupies the space of an old Chinese restaurant that had some notorious health violations and it’s hard not to take that experience in with you. Sumo sushi is tucked away deep inside the Hood Commons Plaza near Shaw’s and a froyo place(it’s a little hard to find if you never visited the area, make sure to check Maps before you go). Dark(almost black) wood floors and booths are set against a relatively minimalist style of décor. The lighting over the booths is set off by shades of various colors which gives the place a clean, cozy ambiance. There is both a bar and a sushi bar. The sushi was excellent. We had the Fantasy roll and the Spider roll with a side of crab rangoon(pictures attached). My only complaint was that the rice could be a little more firm. The meal was nicely complimented with a saki-martini(something that I would normally never order but was compelled to after reading the description). The drink was pleasantly unsweet and very refreshing. The service was very cordial and attentive. Sumo will probably become my regular sushi place if they keep up this level of quality.

Let us be honest, Derry is not the epicenter of the culinary universe. If this place was located in Boston or NYC it would get 2 maybe 3 stars. The Sushi is decent. I had a couple pieces of toro. They were just okay. It didn’t taste that fresh. I’m not expecting it to be like the Tsukiji Market, but it shouldn’t taste like it’s been sitting out for 2 days at room temperature. I had 2 different rolls they offered. One was the Derry and the other was the Lobster Feast. The Lobster Feast was the winner. The crab is definitely out of a can and not fresh at all. Also if you are a Japanese restaurant why are you serving Chinese dishes also? All that being said, the service was fantastic and the food came out quickly. It is as good as your going to find in New Hampshire.

Working in Derry just got a lot better! The staff are always very friendly and quick. The atmosphere in the restaurant has a very nice modern feel. The sushi is presented very nicely and usually includes some art either a drizzle or a flower. During my lunch breaks I’m usually one of 2 – 3 customers in the building(hopefully this will increase). All in all great sushi, and great environment. Best spot in the area.

I got take out from Sumo Sushi last week. Each item was either fantastic or really questionable. The crab rangoons were probably the best I have ever had. The California roll was also incredible. We ordered some shrimp tempura, which was basically a stretched out piece of shrimp that was deep fried. It was served with various deep fried vegetables, which were terrible. My husband had some udon and enjoyed it. I think maybe we just made some poor choices with what we ordered. I will definitely have to give this place another shot.

I haven’t had the chance to dine-in yet, but I’ve taken out about 5 times and have been impressed. I’m glad I no longer have to travel to Wasabi in Salem for good sushi. Would recommend.

The interior was beautiful and service was excellent. Sat at the bar for drinks and a small bite. Mai tais were ok, not the best but decent. Spicy tuna Maki was delicious as was the tempura. Looking forward to going back to try more.

Went back again, and enjoyed our meal. Wait staff needs a little education on what they are serving. Same waitress we had the first time, who did not know the difference between cellophane noodles and udon noodles. This time my wife ordered tonkatsu, or port katsu, and the waitress corrected her by saying it was pork cashew. She then presented it to the table as pork cashew, as if to make sure we knew we were saying it wrong. It’s not pork cashew. Its katsu. Slight annoyance.

This place has been totally renovated since it was Kang’s. It has an authentic Japanese menu, minus all the other stuff of the hybrid Asian restaurants that have an identity problem. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre and the prices astronomical, which I guess goes hand in hand with being in the massive former retail space that it inhabits. It may do well do to the fact there is nowhere else for sushi in Derry, but I can’t people making this a destination restaurant.

My friend and I had dinner at Sumo Sushi recently. The place was renovated into a nice modern casual Japanese restaurant and bar(still in the same spot in the restaurant). The far space at the Hood Commons was formerly occupied by other Asian/Chinese restaurants including Derry Kang’s Kitchen and Power Wok. Anyways, upon arrival we were promptly seated and given the option of being seated in the bar area or dining room, we chose the latter being seated in a booth. The waitress arrived shortly after being seated and took our drink order. We placed our dinner order when the drinks arrived, Green Tea($ 1.29), Hot Sake($ 8.50) and ice waters. For an appetizer, the Calamari($ 8.95) consisted of rings and tentacles lightly fried in tempura batter and served with sweet & sour sauce for dipping. The calamari presentation looked good, but the calamari was very chewy and rubbery. Next the hot miso soup and clear soup(with mushrooms & onion) came out, both pretty good. The side salad had crisp iceberg lettuce, red cabbage with a tangy ginger dressing, standard type. For dinner, my friend ordered the Sashimi Deluxe($ 21.95) which was presented in a big bowl filled with 16 assorted pieces of raw fish on top of crushed ice, shredded radish garnish, lemon slice, and a fresh flower. He thought his sashimi was pretty decent, middle of the road. I ordered the Hibachi Chicken & Salmon Dinner($ 18.95) which was a generous portion of food with pieces of tender chicken breast teriyaki, grilled salmon teriyaki, fried rice(with traces of egg), and mixed fresh vegetables. The taste of the food was slightly salty, but otherwise a good dinner. There is no hibachi grill in the dining room here, hibachi meals cooked in the kitchen. For dessert, the Banana Tempura with Ice Cream($ 5.95) consisted of 5 banana pieces lightly fried in tempura batter, topped with chocolate syrup, whipped cream and cherry, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. This dessert was pretty good, best part of the meal, IMO. Overall, the food we had for dinner was pretty decent for the most part. The service here was acceptable with prompt delivery of the food to our table. I was given a refill on the green tea once, but no refills on the ice water. Sumo Sushi is currently the only sushi and Japanese restaurant in Derry, which is a good place to go for Japanese fare if you happen to live close by. I agree with Darren that I also can’t see people making this place a destination restaurant, which is kind of similar to the smaller Jay House in Londonderry. For the best sushi in the area, I make the drive to Dynamite Sushi in Hudson and also Masa Japanese Steakhouse in Manchester for a fun hibachi dinner. .

Finally! A sushi place close to home. We did take out and tried the seaweed salad, pork gyoza, spicy salmon roll, spicy, find roll, eel and avo roll, and the Derry roll. The seaweed salad and pork gyoza were standard and as expected. What I didn’t like was that they served the seaweed over some bulky hunks of iceberg. So the salad looked deceptively large at first. The eel roll was as expected and quite good. The spicy salmon and tuna rooms were decent. The fish was chopped quite fine and mixed with such mayo. It was hard to tell the difference between the two rolls. The Derry roll was a shrimp tempura roll topped with what looked to be shredded imitation crab meat. The inside if the restaurant has been completely renovated and upgraded from the Chinese restaurant that was there previously. The ambiance is quite nice and modern. All in all I’m excited that there is a sushi place so cloae to us and we look forward to trying more of their menu.
