Truly a hidden gem of Des Moines. I almost don’t want to review this place so that we can easily get a seat when we go, but I have to tell someone — right? So let me tell you that if you want to have a fabulous lunch experience, then enjoy the best, FREE art center in the midwest, drive over the Des Moines Art Center and bring your appetite. Baru is an extension of the famous Baru 66, at half the price. But just because you pay a reasonable price for lunch does not mean you sacrifice experience. My family and I enjoyed beet salad and a gourmet trout/rice special. The service was fantastic, meal prices reasonable and wine was great. After your meal, you simply walk out and enjoy the fabulous Art Center. Hours are limited at this restaurant, but you will be glad you squeezed it in to your visit.

Baru is wonderful spot for lunch. Located in the middle of the Des Moines Art Center(always free admission) They have Great sandwiches, and salads and they always have something Vegan on the menu! Like the art in the museum the dishes are always served with great presentation. Small plates here! They have great coffee, and a good selection of spritzer flavored waters, beers, and wine! They have a great outdoor seating in the courtyard of the museum with a beautiful pool,(not for swimming) and sculptures to gaze at as you eat lunch under the sun! I usually get a salad when I’m here so I can’t speak for much else of the food, but my wife has enjoyed numerous sandwiches and pasta dishes as well. If your looking for a beautiful spot in Des Moines to grab lunch or a drink during the day, this is a must! Check the hours!

It’s a nice place with good sandwiches and soups, the hours are not good though. The menu could be expanded a little also.
