Cinnamon roll is super good it’s a must have as well as all of the other deserts that are worth checking out as well!

Every Sunday morning I take my coffee mug and go to the Gateway Market for coffee. It costs me 99 cents for a very good cup of dark roast coffee with real cream. I love it. Sometime I get a full breakfast. The portion size is huge and the food is well prepared. The bathrooms are spotless. I like to walk through the grocery store area and look at all the special cheeses and wines and bakery goods. It is an excellent grocery store. It is a little pricey but it is the very best quality. It is a fun place to go for breakfast.

We stopped at Gateway Market on a road trip from Chicago to Denver and had an enjoyable supper. My cheeseburger was very well prepared and used top-notch ingredients. My wife ordered the chicken pot pie, which comes in the form of 2 biscuits covered with gravy, with all of the customary chicken pot pie ingredients added in. Very flavorful! We both had baby cranberry salads. Great stuff! A couple of cookies made a nice dessert. We gave the market area a quick looking over and were impressed with the range and quality of goods available.

Updated review, because I recently found out that they DO have a gluten-free menu, which I’ve uploaded in a photo to make it easier when the line is long. :) Gateway is awesome. You can shop in their eclectic health food market, and then stop over for some fresh gourmet cafeteria style cuisine. They’ve got so many market options for allergen-free food, which is important to us, and they’ve got quite a bit of options in their GF menu. I didn’t see a strict vegan or non-dairy menu, but they were happy to answer our questions. Even when Gateway is busy, it’s worth the wait. Get it to go and eat anywhere in beautiful Sherman Hill. Actually, Chamberlain park is right across MLK on Woodland, and it’s got great views. The point is, don’t skip because of the line. They move fast, the staff is friendly and I’ve never not found a place to sit. Might be more difficult with a group, but there is almost always a 2 or 4 top open. Check them out!

After an evening visiting my aunt in the hospital my daughter and I decided to check this place out because everyone raves about it. I’m not sure why all the hub bub. Maybe it’s a new concept in Des Moines but it is a cute little store. I ordered fish tacos, my daughter got steak tacos and we each shared one with the other. Both were fine but nothing to write home about. And it was pretty pricey. Also, the staff was aloof. Not exactly rude but certainly not excited to help us out.

All food was excellent and fresh. So many GF options! Attached to a market with a good selection but slightly overpriced compared to larger markets that have same foods. The café is a must stop if you enjoy fresh food. We tried Cuban on GF bread, Cilantro Lime salad, Mac and cheese and kids burger.

Oh dear me! If only I had an endless stream of cash. What a great food selection in the grocery! Need a special cheese? They have it. Need a special meat? They have it. And not only do they have all of the things you want, they have the BEST of all of the things you want. You will spend some bucks in here. No doubt about it, but if you’re looking for an ingredient that you can’t find at any other store, I’d bet the farm you can find it at Gateway. Also– if you’re into cooking different/authentic foods at home, you will find all of your supplies here. Get some comfort food, sushi, or gelato to-go. The restaurant is just as great, and maybe even better, than the grocery. It’s expensive for the café-style restaurant you’re expecting, but the food is so so good. It’s also a great place to take the family when they’re in town. It has something for everyone. Mac and cheese for the littles, hamburgers for your meat lovers, salads for all the people who want to feel better about themselves, and delicious dishes like pad thai for the rest of the group. I know I made fun of salad-eaters two seconds ago, but I’m going to take that back, because their salads here are not normal salads. Their salads are phenomenal. I’ll be surprised if you finish the whole thing.

I love this place. As a student, I can appreciate a wide variety of choices in a menu at a fair cost. I have had several things here but by far their market Mac is what catches my attention every time. This is a great place to catch a quick bite, stop by with the family, or in my case, set up shop in the corner, eat my Mac and cheese and study. I visit this place a lot and highly recommend it to anyone. It is also attached to the gateway market which is a grocery store you can use to stock up on anything you like as well! Fair warning though, the grocery store is more expensive than you would think so I wouldn’t do my weekly shopping here, I would just stop by for a bottle of wine or loaf of fresh baked bread!

My friends and I had lunch at Gateway on Saturday after a cold, wet morning downtown at Vintage in the City. We each had something different and everything was Very good. Breaded park tenderloin that was the size of the platter, crunchy breading, not greasy and very flavorful. The Reuben was huge and delicious– very succulent. The Lobster roll(which is actually lobster and shrimp salad) was served in an authentic lobster roll bun– toasted and buttered just like it is un New England– and it was SO Good! The veggie burger was tender and very flavorful. All sides were good– crisp fries, fresh salads and a very tasty clam chowder! This was a perfect lunch!

One of my favorite places for soups and salad. Don’t get the full size salad you’ll never finish it, huge portions. I like to order a half salad with a wrap or bowl of soup. The Chicken Corn Tortilla Soup is literally my favorite soup in Des Moines, you’ll love it. Cranberry Walnut Salad(without red onion) is an addicting pleasure! Avoid the daily rush and visit between 11 – 12. You’ll really enjoy this place.

Food is awesome! Awesome place to get all your groceries and pick up dinner too. Parking is horrendous when it’s busy though. Not much for dessert options now that the bakery section is gone but the gelato makes up for it!

I love the store, and i love the deli. They are on the pricier side of things but they also have a plethora of imported items, and items that are hard to find or come by at other stores. So they have a good selection of just about everything. I like them more than whole foods, because they are not so corporate feeling or looking.

The Gateway Market is a good local grocery store. A lot of good food here, they sell South Union Bakery breads that are great. The salad bar is really good too, and their premixed dips/salads are great. A good selection of craft beers here too with a 16 beer rotating growler filling station! Their brisket bacon burger patties are also a must try. Recently tried the market café here, my only regret is just trying it now. We got the spinach artichoke dip with toasted pita chips, these are amazing, the small is plenty for 2 – 3 people. Also got the Gateway Burger with bacon, they do very well on this burger, now one of my favorites. The fries here are really good, comes with a Parmesan ranch sauce too. We also got the New England Lobster roll and it is excellent. Some of the things at Gateway are pricey but they do have very good varieties to fill everyone wants/needs.

Easily my go-to grocery store. Gateway isn’t a stop for everything — they don’t have the same amount of inventory as a place like HyVee — but much of what they do carry is wonderful. The easy knock on the place is pricing — the same is said of Wholefoods. While there is truth to that criticism, not Everything is expensive. A lot of items are comparable to and occasionally cheaper than the bigger grocery stores. Gateway is a great place for meat, cheese, and alcohol/wine for sure. Some of the best crackers and chips that I have ever purchased came from here. They have deals on flowers, hire generally helpful employees, and have a fine café. 2 thumbs up for this gateway… like an actual gateway… not like a store… or both… whatever.

I stopped in around 7:30 for dinner on Wednesday. It wasn’t packed by any means but still a few people eating with still plenty of places to sit. I ordered the pad Thai with shrimp(shrimp is $ 3 extra) and a Sanpellagrino. The pad Thai totally hit the spot, especially with the shrimp. I like to try something different every time I come here but I could see this being something I pick if I can’t decide. My total bill was 14.95, which I thought was pretty steep until I saw the portion size. It is definitely enough for two portions. I’ve eaten here before but what I really liked this time was the service. The guy who brought my food was also busing tables. When I was done he asked if I would like a to go container. I remember having to chase someone down to get one last time so I liked that he was all over it.

I eat here more than probably anywhere else. It’s good food. There are a limited number of vegetarian options and the menu rarely changes. But the dishes are good, you should not be disappointed at all. The pastries are killer. Get one. The grocery store is pretty expensive. I can’t buy anything from the grocery store beyond the occasional bottle of wine or six pack of beer. I guess the grocery store maybe carries items you can’t get elsewhere, maybe? The service can be hit-or-miss. Sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s terrible. It’s really random. Outdoor seating in the nice weather is great. It can get really busy, especially on the weekends, so plan accordingly.

This is your local organic store plus café! Groceries are a tad bit expensive, but you have a good selection of meat, cheeses, spices, sauces and etc. Their is an area which offers some pre-packaged meals to go such as salads, soups, dips, and sandwiches. They even have ramen too. In the back there is a small bakery with baked goods. They do have macarons, cakes, cookies and etc. I usually get the monster cookie and oatmeal raisin. Very good! There is also a baked good section in the café too. Sushi to go — relatively cheap. I usually get salmon, cucumber and cream cheese roll for 5.99. Roughly about 10 pieces. They are willing to do custom rolls not in the cooler section. Café review of the items I have ordered: Pretty decent menu with soups, salads and entrees. A lot of variety. Onion rings — awesome and thin and crispy. Seitan gyro — not a vegetarian, but one of my favorite sandwiches. Fries are fresh cut and good. Lobster roll — my favorite sandwich here by far. It’s expensive but you do get a lot of food. Would recommend. Never been disappointed with any of their salads. Burgers are very good as well.

Oh Gateway market if I had written this review based on my first visit it would have been a 4. But my second visit was only a tad above average and hence it rounds down to a 3. SHORTREVIEWVERSION: ORDER: Burgers or Ramen DONOTORDER: Mac and cheese, Korean Steak Sandwich, and chicken fingers(too spicy fork kids) PRACTICALMATTERS: try not to use their bathrooms, they are filthy and are not cleaned regularly. As is often the case with restaurants that I enjoy i will frequently go back again(sometimes the next night) because I enjoy their food so much. This was the case with Gateway market. I visited Gateway market last Friday and order the House Ramen which was VERYGOOD, the vegan in my family had the VEGAN Banh mi which received rave reviews and one of my babies had the chicken fingers and the other had the burger. I would highly recommend the Ramen, haven’t made it to Krunkwich but the ramen here is pretty legit(I have eaten at Momofuku and while this isn’t as awesomely rich in flavor it is definitely good). The vegan banh mi was a hit and was jam packed full of flavor. The chicken fingers for one my babies though… they were a tad too spicy and I ended up sharing my noodles with them. There was way too much cayenne in the breading of the chicken fingers. The burger was amazing, as I mention again below. Well worth the money spent. One thing to note, the men’s bathroom was FILTHY(I have seen gas station bathrooms that were cleaner). Which to me is a sign of the hygiene of the people making your food. So be careful… the fact that they still got three stars shows you how good that bowl of ramen was. On to my next visit, this time I ordered the Korean steak sandwich, my vegan ordered the banh mi again one of the kiddies this time ordered the burger and the other ordered the mac and cheese. I would rate the Korean steak sandwich 2.5 stars, it was horribly one note and did not have the traditional Korean marinated beef flavor. The burgers I must say were tremendous. The patty it self was bursting with flavor and they were generous with the cheese. The mac and cheese was in a word, HORRIBLE. The cheese sauce had no cheese flavor, it was basically thick milk mixed with flour. Once again my kiddies were disappointed. the burgers and ramen saved the day… without those this place would be a 2. Another note, the counter service is hit or miss. On my first visit I received great service from our cashier on our second service the lady acted like i didn’t belong and looked past me each time. Will return, BUT will be very careful what I order. this isn’t one of those places where you can order anything. You have to be selective.
