Good coffee and donuts and not too crowded like my favorite smokey row BUT did not like that they charge full price for an ice coffee refill. Smokey row is free but they could at least discount it.

I have been to all three locations of Java Joe’s Coffee Shop and this one on Douglas Avenue is my favorite. It has a drive through window and an area inside for seating at 18 small square tables with chairs. It is a busy location. There is no private meeting room and no privacy between tables. You could not have a business meeting here. You could not have a romantic cup of coffee with an Internet dating friend. It does have an attractive counter and the baristas are capable. A draw back is that a small 8 ounce cup of house brew us $ 1.75 and refills are $.80 each. The coffee tends to be a dark and strong like a private in-house roast blend should be. Other coffee houses have lower cost first cups with free refills. There is a free Wi-Fi which has a reasonable speed. I guess I would use this location if I had computer work to do by myself and needed to be in the Northwest area of Des Moines. I would not schedule an important meeting there nor schedule a date there where I wanted to enjoy a private conversation.

We’ve been here a handful of times. Have come as a family and brought friends on a few occasions. This is a great addition to the area! I know that it’s not the 4th street location but it’s not trying to act like it either. This area is a more modern take that I think does a great job in it’s own right. The staff has always been super friendly, the drinks have always been crafted wonderfully and the food has always tasted great. The time of day that we’ve visited has varied but there has always seemed to be a decent stream of people coming in and out and a good handful of people eating/drinking and/or working on laptops. We’d recommend this place to anyone looking for a nice retreat with some good food, people and drinks!

Beverages aren’t as good as the ones downtown. Location is a little chilly, definitely not a warm enviornment. Hopefully things get better for this place.

Great doughnuts! Very friendly staff, nice spot. I stopped in on a Monday after morning walk and found this place a pleasant diversion. Friendly staff, light and delicious pastries. Decent lattes and espresso drinks. Enjoyed it very much!

Promptly attended, nice and quiet atmosphere, perfect place for coffee and donuts. The red velvet donut was excellent. Moist, creamy, and absolutely delicious. Might just be the best red velvet I’ve had

I always see Java joes on my way while doing errands or what have you but never stopped in for a drink. But today was the day I’d stop in to have a cup of joe. When I tried to actively find the place I kept missing the exit. This café is located on a very busy street so keep your eyes peeled! When I walked in it was relatively empty with a few walk ins which is PERFECT if you are trying to find a good study spot. Java Joes has many drink options and breakfast/lunch items in case you wanted a pastry or a little something with your coffee. I obviously got a medium mocha latte with almond milk. Be aware, if you get an iced coffee the drink prices vary. My drink was almost 7 dollars!!! I could buy a bag off Dunkin or Starbucks coffee from the grocery store for that much! I went to find a seat while I was waiting for my drink and the seat I wanted had crumbs all over it. As I was cleaning off the table I noticed the barista looking at me when she called me over to pick up my drink but didn’t say anything about how I was it was her responsibility to clean up the tables which was slightly upsetting. Final thoughts. Nice café but really pricy. If my drink didn’t cost $ 7 when I could get the same drink at Dunkin donuts(almond milk included) for 3 – 4 bucks, I would definitely come back for another try. Until then I’ll stick with other coffee houses.

LOSTINTRANSLATION. The charm of the 4th Street landmark doesn’t translate to this location. Yes, the coffee is just okay and served in polystyrene cups. Zanzibar’s and Java Joe’s go to all the trouble of roasting their own beans and serving in in styrofoam(brand name) is baffling. It’s like Baru 66 serving on Dollar General stryrofoam plates. Mars Café gets it. The drive thru is too small. If there’s a need for them to bring out your order(ala fast food drive thru) there’s no enough room for cars to pull forward essentially locking the line in place. They need adjacent parking spots with big number signs, tell cars to pull into them. This won’t be a problem for me as I won’t be visiting this location again.

Good news morning/coffee lovers! Java java java java java Joe’s! If you live on Douglas near 50th st you will be excited to see that the new location of Java Joe’s is now open! The old Kum & Go has be totally redone and it looks great! This is the third one! Stopped in this morning. There is a drive through! I had the time so I went inside. As I walked in beautiful outdoor seating on this corner right across from the school and Donut Hut. BUT you won’t have to cross the street to get your donut fix. They have fresh donuts, breakfast sandwiches, and pastries inside. There is a menu by the register but the woman behind the counter was quick to help me decide on what I wanted without wading through everything. The interior is small but cozy. Windows allow so much light in and I think they may have free WiFi but I forgot to ask. I received my drink and did ask if they would have live music here. The woman said probably not with the size but I really think they can utilize the outside space abd make it happen. Everyone was nice and the flow of people was good for that early in the morning. Even more exciting to see someone walk in from close by to support them. I think this will make a great addition to this corner of Douglas and I’m always ecstatic to support locally owned and operated locations. My drink was a skinny dirty chai. Which is chai tea with a shot of espresso. Yum. I have the jitters already! Next time I will try the drive through but this time I got my fellow Unilocalers pictures. Stop by. Try them out. Support local!
