This is my hood«liqqa» store and I frequent it often… but I’m not an alcoholic. I just drink a lot. The guys behind the counter are family and they know us by name. As far as liquor, beer and wine, this store has a fantastic selection. I’m 420 friendly and also buy my wraps here. There are some grocery store items and I will admit I’ve broken down and paid for the expensive milk. However, I haven’t tried any of the food items except for ice cream. And that’s always been fresh. This store is rarely NOT busy, but the line moves fast. Outside the store is much safer than it used to be. The owners keep the lot clear of non-customers. It’s clean and stays stocked. Stop here for your booze!

Oh man, this place is great! Being that I don’t live close to Marcus, I was forced to find somewhere to get good beer. Sure, Big B’s up at Trumbull and I-94 is closer, but their selection is kind of(by that I mean very) sparse. They are good for a cheap beer run, a pack of smokes, a bottle of easily-available, average liquor, mixers, etc. It was with the tip of a friend that I went and checked out Forest Liquor to see if it was true that I had a good liquor store within walking distance of home. Yup, this place has a great beer selection, a massive liquor selection and an impressive offering of wines. As noted, you’ll find stuff you won’t find elsewhere, from Short’s to Arbor to Bell’s, you name it. Not just the usual offerings, but a few ones I haven’t seen in most other liquor stores. A note on the remarks that this isn’t a normal hood liquor store, I have seen the owners walk out and get people off of their property if they were being creepy, weird, disruptive, whatever. Its nice to see that they are trying to keep a certain level about their business.

I love Forest Liquor. As far as inner city corner stores go, Forest is tops. They have a nice selection of Michigan microbrews and some snazzy ones from elsewhere that they change up every month or so(Dogfish Head, Stone, Rogue, New Belgium…) They have like a thousand varieties of potato chips and all kinds of weird candy. If you see Munch Bars here, get one, they’re the jam. Caramel Dittos are also quite excellent. They have a good selection of Ben & Jerry’s and other decent ice cream and your basic grocery needs. The guys who work here are always super nice.

No wonder Detroiters, unlike other people around the world, don’t call these kind of stores convenience stores, because they are nothing but convenient! Instead, Detroiters call them corner, liquor, or surprisingly party stores! Although I don’t recommend partying there. Most of the liquor stores in Detroit are dirty, smelly, and don’t carry good beers. A few liquor stores, however, would surprise you with a few local microbrewery beers. Forest Liquor, which isn’t on Forest, is my favorite liquor store. It’s clean, smells normal, and carries a descent selection of microbrews. They carry Arbor, Bell’s, and Short’s. What impressing for me is that they carry Stone, which I don’t think is carried by the popular Marcus Market. And, of course they have all the usual suspects and some nicely designed ghetto beers. Among the liquor stores in the Midtown area, I believe Forest Liquor is your number one choice when it comes to beers(what else do people go to party stores for?). I didn’t do an extensive comparison between Forest Liquor and Marcus Market, presumably the best liquor store in the area, but I’m sure that Forest Liquor will not disappoint a beer lover. Unfortunately, Forest Liquor is like every other corner store in Detroit, has a huge bullet proof glass window that makes the party stores experience a little bit awkward. Hence, only 4 stars.

So, if you’re from Detroit you kinda expect to see either a church or a ratty liquor store on every neighborhood corner. Forest Liquor is my dirty neighborhood liquor store and I love it. For an inner city party store Forest Liquor has got a pretty awesome selection of beers both imported and domestic, wine, liquors, and even sake! In addition, Forest Liquor has a small selection of groceries like ice cream, hot dog buns, and frozen TV dinners. The prices are pretty decent. I can skate out of Forest Liquor with a nice bottle of Pinot Grigio for under 15 bucks. The owner is friendly and appreciative(he knows you could walk 2 feet and go to the other store right down the street). The only downside is that the parking lot can get cluttered with some sketchy folk.
