I used to work in the area and still come back for Telways. I had never been in George’s, so today I thought I’d give them a try. $ 5 and some change for a couple coneys, fries and a coke. The coneys were good, the Coke/Pepsi was good, the fries left a yellowish/brown grease residue on the plate and on my napkin when I wiped my fingers. They use real China and flatware, but that’s about the end of the kudos. The smell of stale grease in the deep fryer hits you when you walk through the door, and stays with you till you walk out. The décor is old and over the years it has sucked up the grease floating in the air. All the windows in front are plexiglass. The rest rooms are not somewhere you want to spend quality time, or any time at all. Three video machines back toward the restrooms allow you to while away your time and money. I probably will not return.

Horrible. Pop from 2 liters. No fries. No grits. Even though it’s on the menu. My French toast was cold like it wasn’t microwave enough from being frozen. Blah!

Coneys. Detroit food. There are a lot of places to choose from. Once upon a time in Detroit, next to the Senate theatre there used to be a coney island called Senate Lunch. Great food. But like so many of my favorite places, they moved to the burbs. Happily, Georges Famous is there. There are a lot of places to get coneys. Georges has good coneys, decent prices and you will not leave hungry, and your wallet will not have a huge dent in it. Ok, it’s not fancy, the décor isnt 4 star, but for me it’s the food that counts. Thats what makes Georges special. as a dated commercial once said… Try it, you’ll like it.
