I LOVE Wala. Directly across from the courthouse, all it takes is a quick street crossing to have access to delicious lunch food. Every item I have tried thus far has been outstanding – their salads, their sandwiches, they’re all winners. I’m a sucker for a great salad, and although the Santa Fe salad may not qualify as healthy, it certainly doesn’t skimp on flavor.
The prices are spot-​on for the quantity and quality of food. Similarly, service is wonderful.
They can get a little bogged down during busy periods at lunch. If you’re in a hurry, it might be advisable to place your order over the phone before coming in.

The food is meh, but then I’m a stuss eater… nothing on the menu is really unique, yet another sandwich place *snore*
The woman who runs it is really cool so I stop by occasionally and grab something or other but for the prices I don’t find the food worth it IMO.

They have fast good food. Motown cheese steak extramly good. If your in the holiday inn i really suggest to go to this wonderful establishment.

This place is awesome! The food is incredible, they play awesome 90s/​early 2000s R&B, and the service comes with a huge smile and a welcoming demeanour. Do yourself a favor and get in here.

Deeelisious! Found this gem while visiting Detroit, quick and a super friendly couple run the joint. They recommended the cheesesteak and it was amazing, don’t forget the green siracha!

I have been here many time over the last week. Each time I come here for lunch, I am greeted warmly by the staff, and served a delicious meal promptly. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone in the downtown detroit area.

Came out here with my team for a fun lunch to try something new, we were all very impressed by the quality of the food and the restaurant style. Just a short walk from Campus Martius and offers indoor and outdoor seating.
I went with the 12″ cheese steak and french fries. Was very pleased by the selection they have and left satisfied with my meal.

Everyone needs to try the philly steak and truffle fries combo ! Delicious combination of flavors and the Philly steak isn’t greasy or over flavored. I ate it without sauce added to it. The staff is friendly and it’s a cute spot

Best philly in the city and an excellent place to go to if you live/​work downtown. Ticket times are super fast as you can get your food and get out of there in less than 10 minutes if you are in a rush. They have a small dining area and a really nice patio area as well.
Overall, the portions are very big for what you pay for. I usually get a 6 inch philly with fries for 5.99 which is essentially the same prices as Subway, but much better quality.
And if you are really into supporting Detroit/​Black Owned business in the city (I am) then frequent here.

Wala holds a special place in my heart. It is a 4.5 star for me, but I’m going to rate it 5 and I’ll explain why.
The food itself is 5 stars. The owner is fantastic and very friendly. It is the spotty hours that make this place less than it could be. Often I call ahead to make sure they are open, because they are not always when you drive there.
This place is on the corner of Washington and Lafayette (WALA). Parking is street parking which isn’t always that accessible but that should not deter you from coming here.
Anything you get on the menu is on point. People rave about the shrimp po’boy but I have never had it to comment. I am a cheesesteak fan and this is the best place to get one in the city. The footlong is cheap, filled with ingredients, and the bread is grilled to perfection. The fries are perfectly seasoned with parsley and never soft. Their salad ingredients are from local sources thus always fresh. I highly recommend getting the gyro as well.
Overall: best Philly style cheesesteak in the city.

Amazing place! Shrimp Po-​Boy cooked to perfection. You have to put some Midori Sriracha on it, takes it to a whole new level. Will be back for sure. Cheesesteak next!

This place is so inviting with the creative outside and comfy set up inside. Service is warm and welcoming. Food seems basic at first glance but they offer so many sauces and twists on things that will change your mind about that. This place is kinda quirky and fun.
I had to have a shrimp po’boy. I mean c’mon. So tasty. Just could not stop eating it. Paired with a side salad with some spicy ranch and I was stuffed to the gills for not a lot of coin. Happy. My husband loved his cheese steak with extra cheese and chili cheese fries. I like that you can get different sizes and bread options and that you can get things just the way you like them with no problems. They are extremely flexible.
Everything is made fresh to order and tastes great. Halal meat is featured if that is important to you. I love little gems like this place. A great lunch destination!

This place is just a few minutes walk from Cobo. We loved their steak and cheese sandwiches! Next time I will try their grilled veggie sandwhich. If you don’t know, you better ask somebody! Make this joint part of your Detroit experience!

Come here for the Motown Cheesesteak!
A large sub out the door for $ 8.15. I have also tried the Shrimp Po’ Boy based on Unilocal reviews, but wasn’t impressed. Located downtown.
The staff are very friendly, but check their winter hours by calling first — sometimes they close early.

If you are in downtown Detroit, you must stop at this vibrantly decorated, postage-​stamp-​sized diner and get yourself a shrimp po’ boy with seasoned fries.
I hear that all Wala’s sandwiches are as good as the po’ boy, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able get over the deliciousness that is the shrimp po’ boy and order something else.
Fun fact — this little gem is on the corner of WAshington and LAfayette. Get it?

Excellent sandwiches, cheap, and good service. Got some lunch to go and was not disappointed.
The shrimp po’ boy I got was great, well cooked shrimp, tons of flavor. We got a spinach salad as well, super fresh and tasted great. Giant oatmeal raisin cookie was big enough for two and soft enough to fall apart.
Service was great, staff were joking around because it was halloween but it was funny to watch.
