A-1 Landscaping & Yard Maintenance

Used this service to mow the front lawn of my Davis lawn. Crew skipped my house consistently and I would have to call to remind them. Used them today for a backyard clean up (shrubs and doggie do clean up) and totally disappointed. They didn’t complete the services as requested. When I contacted the owner, his response was” we don’t pick up poop.” It interesting that my quote included that specifically. Better off using a neighborhood kid and/​or college kid to get your service done.

This team is the most honest and dependable group I have ever dealt with. I don’t understand the past reviews. The work was top quality! I had the entire front lawn removed, replaced with new turf, sprinklers, and added a Moss Rock wall so my sloped lawn would be flat. This included a 4 – 6 foot side rock zone near the sidewalk to reduce water usage. Every neighbor has nothing but great comments and MIke has been getting lots of referrals from this job just based on the quality — that says more than any review I can write.
I had a problem fence due to the slope of my plot whereby water drained in one section and weakened the old post — old fence fell down — and erosion was taking hold. Mike’s solution was superior. I now have about 100 feet of concrete base with metal fence post and top-​quality redwood. Did that cost a lot, well, YES but you get what you pay for and I insisted that this «problem» be addressed — and it was. The fence ALONE drew lots of praise by friends and neighbors.
MIke is so easy to work with. He stopped by almost every day as his crew made progress and we made touch-​up changes to our plan without hesitation. Mike does not use the word NO, and he never asked for more money along the way (a fear I had going into this project).
There is no way any company can surpass their work. I do not offer my reviews cheaply — I am highly critical, very honest, and outspoken. I expected nothing but excellence from A1 Landscaping and they came through. YOU MUST CONSIDER THIS COMPANY IF YOU ARE SERIOUS about improving your home. If you want cheap material, bad advice, and lousy workmanship at a discount — go somewhere else. If you want QUALITY, call Mike. Remember, this is YOUR HOME, so please take as much pride in it as Mike does !

Mike was nice, but my property management company reported back to me that the work was absolutely terrible. We won’t be using them again.

I’m totaly disappointed. Very expensive and only about half the work was completed plus tons of excuses about why the rest couldn’t be done. I ended up doing the rest by myself, so yes, it was able to be done.

I hired Mike and A-​1 last fall to replace my lawn with rocks. I’ve never done that before and they took advantage of my lack of knowledge. Less than 6 months after they did it my rock yard was a weed yard. They tore up the grass, but they didn’t do anything to destroy the grass and weed growth (which I have since learned is normal practice for putting down rocks). They then covered the yard with a very thin layer of rocks. Within a month the rocks had settled and you could see bare patches. They obviously cut corners and did not put down the full amount of rock (even though they certainly charged me for the full amount). And they found cheap rock because many of the rocks are actually crumbled dust now! I paid an arm and a leg. After talking to other people with rock yards I now realize A-​1 seriously over-​charged me, didn’t do the full job, put down cheap rock and not enough rock, and the result is a front yard covered with weeds on top of some rocks and bald patches. It looks horrible and I don’t know how to fix it. It’s a very small yard and they charged me thousands of dollars.
Think twice before hiring them. They’re smooth and will try to sell you a bridge. Sadly, I fell for it.

Mike and his team have been doing weekly yard maintenance for me for the last year or so and have done a good job. But, the reason I’m writing this review is I came home earlier this week and discovered they had cut up and removed some whopper branches that had broken from a big pine tree in my back yard — without asking. I’d been expecting I’d have to get some tree guys to come out and do this for me after the big wind storms last week and plunk down some significant $ to get it done. To my surprise, it was just done. I really like that. I’m really pleased at how they just get it done. Thanks Mike!
