Oh Dripping Springs. This town reminds me so much of the small town we’ve been looking to find to call home. On this visit to the Austin area(partially to visit family and partially as a scouting junket), I made sure that the Founder’s Day celebration was on our agenda. I wanted to see the towns’ people and what they’re about. It was the Friday of opening and we were flying out on Saturday mid-day. We missed the vendors but did see the parade and walked the(what seemed like) HUNDREDS of bbq challenge participants firing up the smokers and q’s. The smell was fantastic. This was destined to be a bbq fans dream of all dreams. The downside, we had to leave before we could taste anything. but got our fair share of smells in. And who doesn’t like a parade! What a load of fun and energy! This is what small towns are made of and I love it.

The carnival games are nothing more them a scam to take your money and leave the little ones disappointed. I spent the day with grandkids and never saw one person carrying a stuffed animal. The guy running ring toss told me he only had two winners in the 18 months he’s worked for Thomas carnival. Rides are expensive. You’ll go through 40 tickets… like after the 2nd ride. Bring extra cash. Although they say there ATM machines on premise… this is a lie… there are none except for the Wells Fargo at entrance and nothing in the carnival area can be purchased with debit or credit card.

If you like any kind of festivals, you will LOVE Founder’s day. I have been once, and we brought a few friends of our and three kids. We had a blast! They have beer, food, drinks, ALLTHEBADCARNIVALFOODTHATYOUCANWANT, rides, games, booths, dances, and did I say Beer? This is a great place for kids and just for a good time. You can sample BBQ at different spots, there is a cook-off. They have some live music. It takes up a whole street in Dripping Springs. We will go back every year. It’s fantastic. GOOO!!!

I’ve compiled a list of some things that are imperative for a local celebration: Fried Oreos Boiled Crawfish Parade Beer Roasted Corn Live Music Sunscreen(which I didn’t have this weekend) Kid leash Carnival BBQ Cook off Alka-Seltzer An average of 25,000 people head just west of Austin to celebrate all that is Dripping Springs, Texas. My highlights included sampling my first ever Pork Bomb. It pays to know everybody in the cook off sampling everything including salsa, brisket, chicken, chili, and the above mentioned pork log wrapped in bacon and then smothered in Jack Daniels BBQ sauce. See my last entry for my essentials list. Hope to get all my Unilocal friends out next April!
