The atmosphere of this studio is nice and relaxing, which is benefical to doing a pilates program. The lobby area is especially nice to relax at as you can sit and read some magazines while awaiting the start of a lesson or class. I first had a series of private lessons here beginning in late 2006 and lasting throughout most of 2007. At the time, my instructor was Valerie, who was young and affable and taught me a myriad of exercises on the reformer and the cadillac. I enjoyed those sessions with her and learned a lot about pilates. My favorite exercise was the hundred. I liked it because it was challenging and it was something that provided me motivation to focus and perform to the best of my ability. I recall Valerie made it challenging for me to do it on a mat. She also had me do exercises on the Barrel and the Wunda Chair. Doing the stretches on the Barrel was challenging, but fun and unique compared to the typical way streches are performed in a gym. I had a great time working with Valerie and getting to know her thru out chats between exercises. Unfortunately, when I stopped coming to the studio, I lost contact with her and forgot about how to perform the exercises. Although I liked the lessons, I stopped having them in order to watch my finances. In the summer of 2013, I decided to have private lessons here again. Because many years have passed since 2007, I had a notion that Valerie was no longer at the studio, which turned out to be true. But I welcomed having a different instructor. Mary is older yet just as nice and informative about pilates as Valerie. In my sessions with Mary, she’s had me do exercises on the reformer and the cadillac. The same exercises Valerie taught me, but with Mary, it’s been fun doing them again. Mary made it challenging for me to perform the hundred on the cadillac, which I enjoyed and am motivated to do more of. Also like with Valerie, it’s been good getting to know Mary thru the talks between exercises. At all my lessons here, I’ve always worn the same attire-a tight red shirt with very short black shorts along with being barefoot. The same attire I wear for yoga. I always enjoy seeing myself in this attire at the mirror whenever I’m at the reformer. Sometimes it’s funny seeing my shorts crumpled up in the mirror after doing the exercises on the reformer. But wearing shorts doesn’t restrict my ability in performing the various exercises. Being barefoot at the studio helps me relax and be confident in doing pilates. But I was embarrassed and ticklish when Valerie grabbed hold of my foot to properly place them for an exercise. Mary has touched my feet several times, but I don’t feel embarrassed and ticklish like I used to be although I felt ticklish when she touched my knee cap. I find it amusing and helpful in terms of proper feet placement on the reformer bar. Despite a relaxing atmosphere, it can get distracting during a private lesson when a class is occurring at the same time. Whether it’s during a class or at the lobby, the people(majority are females) who workout at the studio like to engage in conversation with the instructors. They discuss subjects such as their excellent careers, the big aspirations of their kids, and their vacation plans. Subjects that can make one, who’s never been fortunate to experience these pleasures, to be envious. If you’re sensitive to this, my advice to ignore small talk like this and just focus on working with your instructor in doing pilates. This is a great studio to do it in.
