Can’t believe I lived in Duluth while going to UMD and never knew about this large, beautiful park not far from campus. There are hiking trails, mountain biking trails, and cross country ski trails. Great views from the top of Knob Rock and on the other side a pine forest that has a eerie feeling about it. You can walk and walk and walk the trails that seem to go on forever and feel like Hansel and Gretel. No maps are posted anywhere, but we did see an occasional person so I didn’t totally panic. The nature center building had restrooms and a drinking fountain. It also had a stuffed owl & beaver and real turtles & snakes. This is a great place to get some exercise and take some nature photos.

When we looked up things to do in Duluth, Hartley Nature Center made our list, with all of it’s trails to hike. I was 4 ½ month pregnant(so we didn’t do a TON of walking), and my husband carried our 1-year-old in a backpack carrier. She loved seeing all the sites, including a couple deer. Our only complaint was that the map wasn’t the greatest. Some of the trails didn’t exist or sometimes there were extra trails that were’t marked. We would still go back though!
