Ouch. It’s never easy to hear that the central air conditioner in your rental is dying, especially during a weekend with temperatures above 100 degrees. Even more so when you’re out of town, and your tenant is relaying that information to you… That said, we got ahold of All Weather’s service department and got a technician to come out right away. He told us some good news — he could get the system working by adding a few pounds of Freon… …and some bad news — that the system had a leak, AND that the compressor was on its last legs. We got him to patch it up, and arranged a meeting with Richard Bryant, the owner of All Weather Heating and Cooling, Inc., as soon as we got back. Richard was prompt and courteous(both very high on my list as far as people I want to do business with), and did a thorough evaluation. He went on to explain our options, but also told us up front that if we used them for this project, they would have to do some work in our attic to bring it up to code($ 300). He went on to tell us what it would cost to repair our dinosaur, and also about the environmental act that prohibited the sale of new Freon systems(which I happen to agree with), should we decide to replace the unit — which we ultimately did. He went on to say that if we purchased a new unit from him, he would credit us for the weekend service call(less the price of the Freon). We agreed to purchase a brand new Lennox system and have them install it. On the appointed day, they got there right on time to start the carpentry work to bring our attic up to code. Richard called to tell us that the unit we had ordered was out of stock, and so he was installing the next better one(with higher efficiency) at no additional cost to us. Despite the heat, these guys worked all day so that the unit was installed and working by the time that our tenants got home from work. All Weather called us last week to let the electrician in, to inspect and sign off on the work. They sent a letter this week to schedule the county inspector to come and do the final inspection and permit paperwork. Oh, and the total cost came in almost $ 300LESS than what we’d agreed upon. I liked that, too. I really hope I don’t have to do business with these folks again anytime soon, because that would mean another large expense. But if I *have* to have AC or heating work done, I won’t hesitate to call these guys. Their work was top notch, and the owner and staff were both honest and ethical — two other things I hold in high esteem when doing business with someone.
