«James Joyce makes excellent Carolina ribs» is a sentence you never thought you’d hear. But it’s true. The quality of the half-dozen craft beers on tap was no surprise, but the quality of the food put JaJo(can we make that catch on?) over the top. Perhaps the most apt sentence came from a Raleigh-ite at the bar who makes regular trips here. It was a fortuitous warning: «This place sucks you in.»

The bar tenders are great. The food will have you coming back for more. The chefs change the menu daily using fresh local ingredients.

I love this place! The bartenders rock, and they have one of the best beer selections on Main Street. They’ve really stepped up their food game recently. The food has always been good, but RJ is killing it with the new, rotating menu.

I’ve always enjoyed the James Joyce. The Irish food is authentic, delicious and inexpensive. They’re also serving food on Holidays when most places aren’t. The staff is awesome and every time I got there I feel like a member of the family. If you’re looking for an outdoor patio, they have two! Its a great place to grab a pint and keep warm in the winter or have a cold beverage and stay cool in the summer sun. They’ve always given back to the community and have provided a safe haven for us Rugby Players. Great spot for a date or a large group in any attire.

Beth is awesome! Love this place for one thing and it’s not the drinking. I’m a fan of all the appetizers. You can’t go wrong!

Terrible bouncers– Had a co worker thrown out for unbelievable bs past week. Another bad bar in Durham. Never go there. Small dump with overpriced alcohol. Stay away. Place is made for midgets.

Had the MOSTDELICIOUSRUSSIANIMPERIALSTOUTEVER, as well as a hamburger with rashers, cheddar, and BBQ sauce that made me forget all about the lamb burger G2B thinks its too good to serve anymore. Landon took good care of us, sang along to my ’80’s alt playlist, and managed not to freak out when 2 Christmas parties flooded the place. We’ll be back soon.

Beth, the bartender is awesome. I love coming here with friends especially on Trivia Nights and Open Mic night. Their food here is great too! My gf and I came here for our first date on St. Patty’s day. This place will always be special for us. They have a great outdoor area with plenty of seating for when the weather is nice. Definitely one of my favorite bars in the area.

Pig picking today with beer from pig pounder brewery. The pork was wonderful and tasty with a hint of smokiness. The beer was great. We tried the mild mud and pigmosa. Really good.

Been here a few times, and its a pretty solid bar. I have never tried their food,(somehow I always forget they serve food???) but I’ve heard good things from friends. Most recently stopped in this past weekend with a friend and my husband. We ordered a couple of drinks, and found a table. As far as I can tell there’s no wait staff, so if you want another round, you go to the bar. I like this place, but since I prefer games and whatnot with my drinks I’m not really a regular, but on a low key night, its a good spot.

A friend of ours Chris Hassey is now a new chef at this restaurant Pub, so we decided to stop by and try it. Although he was not working we still ate a wonderful meal with awesome conversations with Jim the Bartender and Beth their waitress. I so enjoyed the very freshly made Fish & Chips. Amazing flavor! My husband ordered the Corn Beef and Cabbage with a side of homemade mashed potatoes. Simply scrumptious! Thank you Jim and Beth for a wonderful experience!

Enjoyed our first time visit with out of town friends! One of my friends doesn’t drink beer but, loved«It’s Not Your Dads Root Beer» The homemade primento cheese sandwich was wonderful! We were disappointed that the online menu was totally different then the pub menu; which I felt was very limited and pricey. The online menu should be updated or removed

this place has come a long way since i’ve last been here. normally, i would have given this place one star, but they’ve recently remodeled their bathrooms. the toilet actually works now, and it’s actually quite luxurious and spacious.

Just finished one of the best pub style fish and chips in the US. As a Brit my expectations were not high — I’m used to disappointment. James Joyce did a great job. Cod tasted fresh, batter was just right. Great service and a nice pub too!

Wow! My sister and I came here with no expectations and left completely satisfied! My sister got the James Joyce burger and I got the wings. Both were amazing and the fries were unbelievable! I recommend this place to anyone who stops in. And the service was awesome too!

Jesus comes back like a Thief in the Night. He ends up at James Joyce Irish Pub. He leads with his military ID because he is Psalms 118:22 and ended up an Army of One. Apparently, a military ID isn’t good enough for the bartenders at James Joyce. Jesus goes to many bars.(Matthew 11:19) The way he is treated at James Joyce, he would hit everyone in there with his Rod of Misery.

Just in case anyone would like to know what the laws are, in NC, pertaining to alcohol. I mean, before people start mudslinging and making people look prejudice in any way, shape, or form. To the woman below from another country who claims the bartender is uneducated… you should educate YOURSELF on the rules and laws of different countries/states when you travel. I’m providing you with a list of acceptable forms of ID in NC. Copy and paste to your browser, please!

James Joyce is the Irish bar that shares a wall with Federal. I’m giving it 3 stars because it doesn’t really do anything outside of the usual Irish bar thing. It’s dark inside, lots of hardwood, with typical burger fare. The positives are that the staff is super nice, the food is average but does the job, and the prices are reasonable with the rest of durham. There is also this kinda nifty back deck area that is decorated like a back alley you’d see in the movies. There’s nothing inherently wrong with Double J, it just doesn’t call my name or food or beer like other places in Durm.

Bleah. One thing you will get for certain in this place is rudeness. One day, I went in with a colleague at lunchtime. They are open for lunch. After we were ignored for over 20 min and several staff members went past us, we walked out. I won’t be darkening the doors in this place again. Yer 86ed.

Just did not have a good experience here. I went on a Saturday afternoon while my car was being washed at Bull City Car Wash(thumbs up for them) and the place was not busy, but it was difficult to get any attention. The bartender seemed much more interested in talking to the two college girls at the bar than in acknowledging my existence. I can sort of see his point, since they were much more attractive than me, but still. The beer selection is meh and my fish and chips made me a little queasy. I also kind of got the feeling that if you’re not a regular, you’re treated a little as an outsider.(That was just my impression, which I can’t quantify but can only report my senses.) I’ll take Bull McCabe’s as my Irish pub any day.
