Mitch’s Bar and Grille has inadequate staff to handle large parties of people. A group of coworkers and friends of mine frequented this establishment this past Friday. As soon as we arrived around 7:45 p.m., things started to go bad. The waiter/bartender(who was super friendly) said he had only been on staff for 20 minutes and really was just winging it. His difficulties resulted in members of my party not receiving food after two hours and going home hungry. I did receive my dish and it was nothing to write home to mom about. There is guy in the back who is working the fryer and the grill. The wings were good, but you could go somewhere else and get better. I will not be going back anytime soon.

Tried them for the first time this past Saturday. My hubby and I ordered cheeseburgers… they were good(not the best I’ve ever had). I wish we had tried the wings… that seems to be what they’re most known for. It was exactly what I expected out of a bar; Not bad, not great.

Finally, Ninth Street has a place to go for wings! So many different flavors — your traditional flavors and then, oh boy, their original sauces. Cherry Maple Bourbon… um, yes! Bacon barbecue… ridiculously good; loaded with real bacon, it blew my mind. The nuclear lived up to its name — hot as hell, a real creeper. Nice work — and I’m a wing snob. Oh, and by the way, these wings are from Cliff’s in Carrboro. Meaty. Juicy. You can taste the difference when they aren’t frozen schwag.

Unfortunately, Mitch’s recently has not been leaving me with the good vibes that it once had. Yes, the bar itself is still very low key and chill, and yes, that wooden booth up front still offers prime kick ass seating. However, the service that I have received as of late has been far short of cordial, and that counts for a lot in my book whether you’re in a swanky bar or a dive bar. I can handle standoffish from a server, but outright rudeness kind of miffs me. Furthermore, Mitch’s apparently is no longer offering any drink specials(which were once very solid here) and the list of brews they had run out of seemed to exceed the list of beers that they had to offer on one particular recent visit. Hopefully, this has all been an anomaly, but still it seems that Mitch’s needs to step it up a bit in their service department.

Enjoyed a yummy meal at Mitch’s the other night with Christina G. This place is a great, low key bar. On a Monday night there was not much going on, besides a couple people hanging out at the bar we had the place to ourselves. Our waitress came over quickly to take our drink order, both Shotgun Betty’s, a light refreshing summer beer. For dinner I got a grilled buffalo chicken wrap with a side of their new homestyle fries. It was really good. The wrap was spicy, but not too crazy, and very filling. I only had half and then had lunch the next day! The fries are very soft, I usually like them crispy, but they were still pretty tasty. The menu here is your standard, typical bar food. Nothing crazy, but good choices and the food is good quality. They have a nice selection on tap, and the prices are very reasonable. If ever on Ninth Street I’d recommend checking it out! Would make a great late night snack as well!

Good, cheap and simple! At Mitch’s you’ll find your basic bar food — except the surprising sweet potato tots which I’m still thinking about 24 hours later. It’s a small menu with your bar food staples: chicken fingers, sliders, jalapeño poppers, BLTs and fries. What made this place stand out for me were the prices. I ordered the sliders entre which comes with your choice of side. As mentioned above, sweet potato tots all the way baby. The entre had two mini sliders and lots of tots. All for the dazzling price of $ 5.25…wow! I was honestly shocked. I spend more on my order at Taco Bell most days. Beers are reasonably priced ranging from $ 2 to $ 5. Mitch’s has a basic interior, no frills no thrills, but it gets the job done. Overall, it’s a great, chill bar with some stellar prices. I’d say GOGOGO!

Just had a terrible experience here. The first time we used a Living Social deal they let us included alcohol, but this time they didn’t. We didn’t read the fine print, and it actually does exclude alcohol so they were right, but overall the waitress was just surly about it. She could have brought out the coupon and showed us(she didn’t). She also didn’t show us the receipt for our food(if she had we would have ordered something to go as we didn’t use the full value of our coupon). She also awkwardly examined our IDs for about a minute when we walked in(we’re both well above drinking age). These facts paired with the fact that there are no really tasty vegetarian options here is a recipe for me never going back. Go here if you want a desperately generic bar with below average selection and below average service.

Went here for dinner and the Duke game on a Friday night. Surprisingly uncrowded, we easily found a table for five in this small sports bar. The menu features fried items, burgers, and a few sandwiches. Our waitress recognized my friends who had been there several times before, which is always nice. We all got beers, they had a local selection and then moved onto the main course. Unfortunately I chose a grilled cheese, which came with a tomato slice and french fries(or you can get tater tots or sweet po’tater tots). The unfortunate part was that I failed to inquire what cheese it came with — although they had many kinds(as offered on the burgers — swiss, chedder, blue…) the grilled cheese came with American cheese. Despite my intense love for all things American(eyes roll), American cheese just doesn’t cut it. The tomato was also lacking, I know it isn’t tomato season yet though so a somewhat bland colorless tomato was expected. The fries were very good, and I also tried the tater tots and the sweet po’tater tots — yums all around, and all served very quick and hot. And I have to commend our waitress on one more point — she separated all of our checks, quickly and correctly. Hallelujah. If I ate meat the food might measure up, but grilled cheese I can rustle up at home a lot tastier and tater tots don’t really cut it as a full meal for me(now maybe if they had cheesey tater tots…)

This place is a gift from the gods! I was just about to post a conversation here asking for a recommendation for a decent Chicken Tenders basket(my go-to comfort food when I’m hurtin’) in the Durham-CH area, and then Mitch’s opened. When I’m in the mood for gluttony, the food had better be good, and finally I have a place to indulge. My chicken tender preferences are ridiculously refined, and this place gets these fat bombs just right, from the tenderness of the chicken to the amount of breading. With fries to die for, great prices, a kitchen that’s open late, and friendly service, what more could your comfort food quest desire?! Highly recommended. FYI(not Mitch’s review-related) What I look for in a tender of chicken: — ideally not from a fast-food joint — a flat-ish breaded piece of tenderoni chicken in approximately the shape of the state of Florida — breading is ideally flush with the chicken, with perhaps a few mountain ranges. Pepper speckles are not required but often welcomed — not Cook-Out’s version, which has an overly chunky breading and comes with dreadful pre-packaged honey mustard — not Hardee’s version(I was desperate!), which, while tasty, is more tubular in shape than flat, and can occasionally be very stringy and decidedly non-tender — not Chick-fil-A’s version, which, again, is too tubular for my liking. Don’t get me wrong – their chicken is delicious in all forms, but, if you’re going to Chick-fil-A, you had better be getting a sandwich or nuggets — not Bojangle’s version, which are not flat enough and the one time I had them they ruined my digestive system plus I don’t want a biscuit near me when I’m in a chicken tender basket kind of mood and furthermore I patronize Bojangle’s solely for its delicious fries

Halloween night, 2011. A Monday(boo. And I mean that as in «boo, hiss,» not as in, «boo, it’s Halloween and I’m a ghost»). To avoid the insanity of the hundreds of trick or treaters that travel TO our neighborhood for candy, my husband and I arranged an evening at the Green Room with some friends. When we arrived, they had a hand-written«Closed» sign on the door. Despite having a dead cell phone and no phone numbers committed to memory, we somehow managed to round the troops at Mitch’s instead. I’ve been by Mitch’s a few times since it opened and have been interested because it looks so simple and cozy. And it really was! The beer list was pretty good, with some great local options(everyone found something they liked), and the food menu was very comprehensive with all the late-night bar staples. I was torn between the wings, chicken fingers, hot dog and BLT, and ended up very satisfied with my wings. My husband thought the veggie burger was great, too. The tunes were good and the service was outstanding(it was Mitch!). He was attentive but not annoying, and when my Romanian friend asked in broken English if he could turn off the«van» above our table, Mitch got it right away and obliged. It goes without saying that Halloween at Mitch’s was a total treat.

Mitch’s is a nice low-key bar. My wife and I have been struggling to find a place that serves late-night food on 9th street. The menu gets a little limited toward the later hours but at least they have some food. We arrived a little late on Sunday and the kitchen lights were off but Mitch pointed us to some items he’d be happy to serve us. We picked the fries and chicken fingers. He accommodated my request for some ranch dressing and some hot sauce. I had a Flagship IPA with the food. On a prior visit I had the chicken & cheese sandwich that was listed on the sign outside the restaurant and was happy with this choice. Mitch’s is a bar with bar food. Nothing too fancy but fits in nicely in the 9th street scene. Drink specials are good; especially if you’re a fan of the domestic beers. I’m hoping they add some more local brews on tap.

Thank you, Mitch, for being my Cosmic Cantina intervention. At last, a late-night food option on Ninth that’s not a burrito or… the Tavern. We sat at one of the high-tops toward the back, and the bartender came right out to let us know about the specials. Wednesday night is $ 2 local bottles — the bottles are priced $ 2 at the low end(PBR) up to $ 3.75. The drafts are all $ 4 except for Pacifico. I got a Sweetwater 420 and Phil, the Carolina Brewery’s Flagship IPA. It’s basic bar food, but it’s done well. You can choose from among 10 menu items — things like chicken wraps, turkey burgers, and chicken fingers. They come with your choice of fries, tots, sweet potato fries or sweet potato tots. Sweet. Potato. Tots. Feeling famished after a big workout, I asked to start with the jalapeño poppers. Got a basket of about eight — way more than we needed! Fried and wonderfully cheesy — wish the jalapeño pepper was spicier though. Phil thought they were frozen, but still remarkable. I ordered the club sandwich; check out my photo… this thing is STACKED. Tons of fresh deli meat, several strips of bacon, your choice of cheese, quality greens. My white bread wasn’t toasted, which could have improved it. But this sandwich was pretty stellar for $ 7(including a big pile of yummy fries that seemed baked, not greasy at all). Ambiance is minimal. But it just feels like a really great, chill neighborhood bar. I think I just found our new fave walk-to watering hole.
