I attended a pie fundraiser and silent auction a couple months ago at SEEDS that aimed to raise money for their youth development program, Durham Inner-City Gardeners(DIG). According to the website, «DIG empowers teens by teaching organic gardening, sound business practices, healthy food choices and food security values.» Awesome, awesome, and more awesome in my book. I loved spending a couple hours exploring the two acres of land downtown that the DIG crew uses to grow a wide assortment of fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Teenagers actually lead the tours, and they are extremely knowledgeable! Not only do they grow the food, but they also sell it at the weekly Saturday Farmer’s Market downtown. Then, due to fundraisers and auctions, the teens also receive a small stipend each month. So in a way, they get an early start on learning what it’s like to have a job. I took way too many pictures here(it was spring, I was outside, couldn’t help myself). If you’re looking for a unique place to spend an afternoon, I really suggest taking a tour of the gardens. Also, if you like the basis of DIG and are interested in supporting them, check out the website — . You can make a donation or volunteer.
