Was craving a hot dog, went to Unilocal, and voila, ended up here. Ordered 2 Bulldogs, all beef, and walked out w 2 dogs, a Diet Coke, all for $ 7.50. Came w slaw, chili, mustard, and onions. Near perfect! Oh, and the lady behind the counter was friendly and the service was fast as all get out. I will be back the next time the hot dog craving hits!

We like this place, dogs are good and the fries are fresh. Skip the cheese fries, they are coated in gross gloppy fake cheese. All the hotdog varieties are named for dog breeds. Go all the way and get chili, onions and coleslaw. Coleslaw is really good, chili is average, dogs are bright red brightleaf brand Carolina style dogs.

While I am indeed a fan of the Dog House, they are never quite as good as I hope. I had my first one back in the mid-60s when they were the new kid in town for hot dogs. At the time, the King Sandwich Shop and Amos & Andy reigned supreme. But as a kid, I thought the Dog House was just as good. I have to say, after eating their dogs for more than 40 years, I still think they have awesome slaw. Sadly, I think their onions have suffered from modernization, and they are often bitter. It also seems their chili was better back in the 60s and 70s. Still, I am a fan. And I love the«new» chiuaua… and how can you not like a hot dog stand that looks like, well… a dog house?

This local chain has 8 locations in the area, mostly in Durham, and has been around for nearly 40 years, so it must be doing something right. They use a decent quality wiener(not all beef), and their thick(read meaty) chili is made in house, but not necessarily at each location. It has good flavor and is ideal for the classic Southern chili dog. They have a variety of doggie names for the chosen toppings for the dog, like Collie, Boxer, etc. Most are very good, but the mustard, chili, onion/slaw combination is best for me. The only problem I’ve ever encountered is that they may carry the onions over from the previous day, and those can be bitter. They have baked beans, brunswick stew, and even BBQ, but the dogs are the best of breed — I’d stick with them. I’d pass on the fries, they’re the ridged, formed into rectangles kind, bad stuff! This is a takeout only place — some have some limited outside seating.
