This place was really hard to find at night for us. We had frequented this theatre in the day before. It’s really inexpensive for tickets which was refreshing. The location makes it a bit isolated and a tad bit on the creepy side. Overall, theatre was clean and average concession stand selection. The bathroom reminded me of old church basement bathrooms filled with outdated but homey decorum. Upon leaving we saw no one(staff) at the concession stand or anywhere. Two boys were knocking on the theatre entrance doors to be let in. The lights were off and it looked like everyone went home for the night. I was imagining a note being left on the concession stand telling customers to leave cash on table if any snacks were purchased after staff left and lock up after show was over. This def felt like a black and white 1962 episode of The Twilight Zone. Ha!

One of the few places that has barely changed since I was a kid. I still enjoy going to movies here as I have so many memories of this place. It may not have stadium seating or the best concessions, but I hope it is always around.

It was a cold day when I went. I have a lot of time to kill so I thought why not hit a movie? The theater had JUST opened for the day. The young lady who took my money was chipper and answered all my questions about start and stop times for various shows. The lobby was clean and bright. Smelled wonderful. The theater was also very clean, remember it was first showing of the day! The picture and sound was OK as well. This is a slightly older theater. No stadium seating and I guess not a recently upgraded sound system. It was good enough that I can back after lunch to see another movie. In fact, I’d do more daytime shows here if I lived in the area.

Eastgate holds a special place in my heart. I have many fond memories of being dropped off there for a movie in middle school and the years of high school leading up to owning a car, and we’d get picked up about three hours later at the Taco Bell. It’s not a beautiful place. As you can tell by the other Unilocal reviews(and any locals you ask), its grimy reputation precedes it. The floors are greasy with decades of popcorn residue more often than not. The sound isn’t as good as most of the other theaters around either. But I’m pretty sure they still use actual film projection(rather than digital projection), which is a plus for cinema purists. Plus when you go on the opening nights for popular movies, the audience becomes kind of a rowdy little community for just a couple hours. You shout at the guy you know and recognize on the way in. You throw popcorn at the dumb teenagers in the front row who won’t shut up. And then you duck when you accidentally hit a middle aged couple by accident. You shush and get shushed and exchange dirty looks. You laugh at a joke your friend makes during the movie about how bad someone’s acting was. Eastgate is the kind of movie theater you can go to and let it all hang out. It continues to deteriorate as the years pass, but(and I might be the only one on this) I would be pretty sad if it ever did close. Plus I’m pretty sure at some point they undid some of the ticket price increase that occurred once the ownership transitioned from Kerasotes to AMC. If I’m not mistaken, the tickets had been $ 8 at one point in the last couple of years, but tonight I paid just $ 6 to see The Counselor.

The place smells bad, the candy is stale and the popcorn butter makes my lips numb. Jerseyville is so much better. Fresh concessions and great prices.

I live in the area, and anytime my husband and I think about going to a movie, Eastgate does not even enter the conversation. The theater is not kept clean, and the décor is raggedy. It has not changed in at least the past 10 years. If you do go, don’t wear nice shoes or set your purse on the floor.

In 2003, my brother and I went to see The Matrix 2 on opening weekend. Earlier that night I’d mentioned to a friend of mine that I was going to see it. Maybe 45 minutes into the movie, the projector stops and everyone groans, figuring the projector has broken down. A minute later, an employee in the back begins yelling my name, saying I had an emergency phone call. I said to my brother, «Don’t say a word!» and luckily the employees left and the movie started back up a couple minutes later. We giggled nonstop throughout the rest of the movie. It turned out to be my friend that I’d told I was going — him and some other people called the theater and convinced them that my mother had been in a horrible car accident and that I needed to be contacted immediately. I didn’t respond when they yelled for me because I knew it was a prank. They managed to get the theater to turn off both projectors in both of the Matrix showings so they could page me. Both theaters were packed and it was opening weekend for that movie. THEN, my cell phone starts ringing and the theater’s phone number is showing up on the caller ID. I couldn’t understand how the theater could have my phone number. It turned out that someone in the theater who lived on my street went to the counter and offered to try and contact me by phone. I’d like to applaud Eastgate for making a huge turd like The Matrix 2 an entertaining movie by shutting the projector off and scaring the hell out of me by yelling my name. For that alone, I’ve returned to that theater many more times even though pretty much any theater within 30 miles is much nicer. Thanks, Eastgate!

As of now, my husband and I have vowed never to go back to this cinema unless some MAJOR changes happen! The walls are disgusting! The fabric on the walls are pulled off and look like someone spills LOADS of stuff all over them. The whole building actually looks bad. The bathrooms, lets not even talk about them. The movie playing ability isn’t bad, just the place itself. There are also LOTS of kids at almost any given movie time. Its really hard to escape them. so if your looking for a relaxing time at the movie… don’t go here.
