I’m a devoted yoga practitioner, and I had the worst yoga class of my life at the Yoga Center. I’ve studied under many teachers in the US and India, all of whom went to great lengths to ensure a balanced focus on both alignment and breathing, and most importantly, to safeguard against any potential injuries. The Ashtanga teacher at the Yoga Center was the total antithesis if this. She was rude and completely insensitive to the various levels of the students in the room. Despite opening the class by telling everyone to practice at their own pace, and assuring everyone that she would suggest modifications for those who were less experienced, she rushed through sun salutations at a reckless speed that was clearly injurious to many in the class. At one point she literally told us to ignore alignment, which is a recipe for disaster. She neglected to explain intermediate postures, and worst of all, she pushed down hard on my triceps without any warning or request for permission when I was in the deepest version of ustrasana. I had to beg her to stop, because I knew from experience that if she pushed any farther I was going to suffer serious injury to my neck and lumbar spine. Finally, Instead of allowing me to quietly modify the regular poses in order to meet my normal level of practice(something that should be acceptable for both beginners and for yogis who have practiced for years) she repeatedly singled me out and accused me of deviating from her set routine. I wasn’t disrupting the class, so there was no reason for her to do this aside from what seemed to be personal annoyance. The space itself is lovely, and I don’t fault the entire studio. Based on other Unilocal reviews I suspect that there are some capable instructors available at the center. However, for anyone who ventures to a class, I suggest you choose your teacher carefully and speak up if you feel like something’s wrong. It’s not worth risking injury just to avoid the anger of someone who is clearly unfit to be an instructor.

Forgive me if this review rambles, but I just came back from yoga and I’m high as a kite from it! I hadn’t so much as broken a sweat since I moved to the Cape. My life, which used to at least involve an hour and a half at the gym each week, had become a cycle of sleeping all day, working all night, and eating microwave pizzas while watching Game of Thrones in between. After a particularly rough week at work, I knew I needed a detox. I figured yoga, since that would help my mind and spirit as well as my body. There was a center in Chatham that looked good, but then I looked at the Dennis location and saw it: Hot yoga. Oh hell yes. When I left NY, the only thing I missed(next to the comic book store. and my dog. oh, and my boyfriend too, I guess) were the bathhouses. I loved sitting in a sweltering room on weekends and just… sweating it out. So the idea of doing yoga in that sort of heat was intriguing. Booking for a class was easy. I did it all online, paid with my credit card and I was done. One class was $ 20. Not bad at all. The location is right off the main road, in a small building next to a plaza. Easy to find. I walked in and felt super welcomed. The site is small, but cozy. And there was lots of nice gear, etc for sale. The room was pretty hot, but not nearly as hot as I expected. it’s basically just a lot of space heaters in a circle, so it’s not like sauna heat. But I definitely worked up a sweat, and had amazing stretches in muscles that were way overdue for a stretch! The class moved at a great pace, never getting so intense that I felt like I couldn’t handle it, but also keeping me challenged and active. When we finally rested at the end, I swear I could have fallen asleep! The instructor did a good job of demonstrating the moves, while still walking the floor occasionally to help with form. Best of all, the group was amazing. Some yoga centers(or workout groups in general) are so elitist. But everyone here was so nice, from the beginners straight through to the ones who were as good as the instructor! Afterwards everyone wanted to know if I enjoyed myself, and I just felt so welcomed and happy. I don’t have a lot of(ok, any) friends here, so kindness from others just means a lot to me right now, and this group was just amazing. I will definitely be going back!

I love Lynnette and her studio. After trying various yoga practices, I found my match, Ashtanga with Carrie Cooper. I LOVE Carrie and her teaching style. Amazing workshops, Kirtans and more.
