I am from Springfield but have been coming to Velvet freeze/Wunder dog for over 40 years. Don’t expect a gourmet dog, but do expect a unique flavor and texture that will keep you coming back for more. I have no doubt the dogs are a lower grade boiled hot dog, but the combination of the dog, onion and great coney sauce is what keeps me coming back. However, I will say the new owners have obviously changed vendors from the original tamales. The old ones were one of my favorites wrapped in a corn husk. #stillafan

Ahhhh. Where to start! I remember coming to this EXACT location when it was called Velvet Freeze, with my dad, when I was a kid! This place has not changed 1 bit! Same interior, same exact AMAZING food, awesome service! Since I realized they were open again, I’ve been back like 5 times in the last month and it’s been amazing every time!!! Staff is polite, it’s always clean, and food is always great! Ooh and prices are super cheap!

I love wonder dogs, my family loves them, siblings, parents, my own kids, we all love them. Don’t expect some fancy dog, not a Chicago dog, etc. This is a Wonder Dog. This is what they taste like. And this is how we want them to taste. I’ve been eating these for almost 60 years. All other hot dogs are compared to these. The buns are soft, even soggy, the dog is cooked wet, the meat sauce is special, the wonder of the Wonder Dog. People are either going to love these or not so much. It’s like portillos, I don’t care for them, other people dream about them. We buy these but the dozens, to have for special occasions, with their tamales(this cracks my Latino friends up because these are like puddings, not what a true tamale is) chocolate milk, and kitchen cooked potato chips. OMG, that is birthday dinner for my family. This business is in a strip mall. Not fancy, a little dated, great pictures of must of their plates on the wall. Lots of other choices like hamburgers, tenderloins, cheese fries, and the like. Very casual. Very friendly. Very yummy! A Wonder with everything has mustard, meat sauce, and chopped onions. Nothing else! I will gladly burp this up for days. I could, literally, eat these every day. Don’t compare, just try then for what they are. These are the real deal, and delicious!

Love the Wonder Dog! Been eating them since a kid at Velvet Freeze, thanks for keeping the best hotdog alive! Stu H. If you ordered a «chili dog» at a place known for a «wonder dog» then you only have yourself to blame for a sub-par experience.

Terrible had a chili dog, could not eat it. The hot dog came out of a pan of water it was gray and nasty. Would not feed it to my dog. Just buy some chili if you want, its ok. Don’t eat the hot dog if you buy one look at the hotdog hiding under the chili GROSS !!!

I wasn’t very excited that my husband wanted to go here for lunch and was actually going to wait and eat somewhere else later, but Wonderdog had a surprisingly large menu, and once I saw tamales were available, I knew what I was going to have. The tamales were delicious, and even a bit spicier than what I remember the ones at the Ice Cream Shack in Peoria being. The décor isn’t really décor to speak of. It’s a simple restaurant, and the seating reminds me of some Coney Island restaurants that I’ve been to. Of course I’m sure most people come here for the Wonderdog, but they also have scoop ice cream available, as well as funnel cake fries in case you have a hankering for some sweets.
