I had high hopes for this place as this area sorely needs some competition as far as gun ranges go. I’ve been shooting for years now, and there aren’t any good ranges this side of town. Peters is just way too run down and nasty. I don’t care for the drive out to Double Action or Target in Royal Oak. So, when I heard a new one was opening near me, I was giddy.
Well, that giddiness is now gone. I went there this past Sunday with a group of friends and had a simply awful experience. We waited in line 20 minutes before we could even sign up for a lane (not to mention waiting after signing up). I’d almost be fine with that, except 15 of those 20 minutes were spent with no one doing anything. They weren’t that busy, they weren’t at capacity. We just stood in line, not moving at all, for 15 minutes. Once we finally purchased a lane, it was another 10 minutes before we were called in.
I get that ranges can be busy, and we expected some wait for a lane, but 20 minutes just to sign up for a lane (we were third in line)? Making maters worse, once we got inside the lane, it was only half full. There was easily 4 or 5 open lanes, so why the heck did we have to wait so long?
So, we get to our lane (we’re shooting a rifle) and it’s not turned on. We ask the range master, who checks our receipt. While he’s looking, another couple comes in, and says they too were given the same lane assignment we had. Awesome.
So, range master heads out and finally gets our lane activated. Enter the next problem. We paid for an hour, they only activated it for 30 minutes. We didn’t notice that until our time was nearly up and the range officer (new guy now) went to kick us out. So, I had to go out, and fight again now. They tried to argue that our time began 20 minutes before it actually did. They finally gave us 20 more minutes, which is all we really wanted.
The facility itself is quite nice. If you’re shooting a hand gun, it looked like they had 12 lanes or so, and another 12-​ish in the rifle side. The shop is immaculate (to be expected since the facility is brand new). The target holder is a bit obnoxious, but I love the automated distance setup where you just tell it how far out to send the target. Things were well ventilated and well lit. They were severely lacking counter space behind the range (a place to put your jacket/​range bag etc). Just people fighting for space on a few plastic folding tables they had setup.
But the service… ugh. It’s simply terrible. I’d be willing to accept these mistakes if they had just opened, but they’ve been open for 6 months now. The range safety officers seem to be glorified janitors. One guy enforced the ‘no rapid fire’ rule, the other guy seemed not to care at all as people just went ape-​shit rapid-​fire crazy. He just spent his time sweeping casings off the open floor.
I will give these guys another 6 months before trying again. Hopefully by then they have their act more together.

«Danger» is my middle name, so I thought I’d better take a CPL course, just in case. Action Impact had recently opened in the neighborhood and was offering a pretty good deal vs your standard CPL course, so off I went.
The facility is brand new, so of course it’s modern & clean. Well lit, comfortable range with a good selection/​variety of firearms to rent, if you so choose. Well stocked, though there was a particular firearm brand I was looking for they did not carry, but could order. All the accessories you need. Staff and customer service is top notch … knowledgeable, experienced, friendly & competent. Prices are within range of the competition, if they’re not beating them.
These guys don’t issue you a CPL, they give you the required course of instruction so you can apply for your CPL. The reason I chose Action was because the owner, Bill Kucyk, is a former Army Veteran, a retired police officer and an experienced attorney. Figured that pretty much covered all the bases and he does provide some important information from those perspectives via a training video during the class. I had also visited the Southfield location on occasion and was happy with what I saw there.

I checked out the new range after going to the Southfield location for the last year. Range is very clean and the staff are some of the same faces from Southfield location and they are approachable and knowledgeable. They have a few different firearms to use on the range like the FN 5.7 which the Southfield location doesn’t have. Selection of firearms for purchase is also great. My only concern is the pricing of firearms. At the Southfield location there is a large sign posted that says: «ALL FIREARMS BELOW MSRP!!!». I have walked both locations firearm showrooms and have seen firearms that were marked above Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). There is one firearm that I am in search of that they carry but it is marked $ 270 over MSRP ($ 899.99 compared to $ 630) and they will not honor their pricing strategy. The reason I was given to not honor the MSRP is because the firearm is currently selling for more on
and if it doesn’t sell in the shop within a month that it will be posted on Gunbroker. Eventually this firearm supply will catch up to demand like its pistol counterpart and will not command a premium over MSRP and I will just wait until then. I will still visit the range to shoot because they are the best in the metro Detroit but I wouldn’t advocate them for firearm purchases.

I went here to check out the newest shop/​indoor range in lower macomb county. They are still stocking the shop, was told their grand opening is next month. So it’s a new building built from the ground up as a range so it’s made for its purpose unlike some older ranges in area that are converted old shops. The range (my main reason to go here) is well lit great ventilation with a digital target rail system so you know exactly how far target is. Max is 75 feet (they ask no head shots unless your at max distance due to people hitting the ceiling. Only negative thing I’d say is the clips used to hold target are plastic would preferred mounted metal clips to resist target sliding (mine didn’t slide but I could see happening down the road). Range charges by ½ hour ($ 12) or full hour ($ 16) targets are cheap. I brought my own ammo in they checked it to make sure it’s target rounds (no big deal). Woman running the range counter was nice and courteous. Glanced around the shop prices are comparable to other local shops. Overall great experience and will definitely will be back.
