Last Book Store Standing Book stores have been killed by online options, for the most part. There are a few still around, but they have all fled the Eau Claire area. But not Books A Million(BAM). BAM bought out the former Borders, which was by itself the last bookstore in the area. For the most part, pretty much identical to your average Barnes and Nobles or Borders. Big store, books, magazines, papers, gadgets and calendars, with a coffee shop and seating area. Free Wi-Fi. I don’t shop here often, but sometimes it is nice to have a store in town if you just want to browse and get a book that day, so BAM it is. Their coffee shop is merely fair, with reheated frozen food, and ok coffee and espresso. Nothing great, but it’s ok, especially if you just want to spend some time working or reading. Really this is just an ok place, but since it is the last one committed to being in the Eau Claire area, it gets an extra star.

While I’m glad that I was at least able to find one book store in the city of Eau Claire to kill some time during my trip here, the fact they charge for internet access is no bueno. Not sure what rationale behind that is, like most places in this sleepy little town, it was pretty empty when I walked in on a weekend day. Would probably add a lot to the ambiance of the place if they attracted a few more café patrons with some free wifi. It reminds me of a slightly more ghetto version of a barnes and noble, but I can’t complain too much. There was a café, ample magazine selection and plenty of space. I hear this might be nicer than other BAM stores. If they didn’t charge for internet, probably not a decent place to waste away an afternoon in western wisconsin. I guess we should all just be happy that amazon hasn’t obliterated all brick and motor bookstores yet.

In the former Border’s Bookstore location. They didn’t change the inside much at all, so it’s a bit nicer inside than the BAM locations I’ve been to in the southern US. Great coffee shop and seating area. Decent selection of books, of course no bookstore has everything you are looking for. I wish the had more regional selections, such as Boundary Water Canoe Area guides, had to buy one elsewhere.
