This is another lovely place at Edgewater. Love the tempura. I have tried most of the set options. I really like the original, chicken and shrimp tendon options. Edomae tendon is really is a huge portion, come hungry. I have a soft spot for their soft boiled egg. The set also comes with miso soup. One good thing is that they offer take-out.

Pros: miso soup included, decent price(around $ 10 – 13), relatively short line Cons: fried(not the healthiest), a little soggy Tried this place a few times before and decided to finally give it a review. Arrived at mitsuwa around 11:30am on a Sunday and, as always, the cafeteria was packed. I went right to Hannosuke and placed my order for the chicken tendon. I had the original tendon before with the fish, but decided to switch it up. Got my order, found a seat, and ate my meal. The meal came with an egg, nori, green pea, mushroom, 2 shrimp, and a piece of chicken all tempura fried over white rice in a bowl. On the side was a bowl of miso soup and some ginger. The tempura was good, cooked perfectly and went well with the rice. I wish the pieces were crispier, as they were on the soggy side. However, this wasn’t a deal breaker for me and I still enjoyed the meal. Would recommend this place and will be back for more.

They may have brought the recipes over from Japan, but not the chefs. The tempura were all so soggy! And it wasn’t just me either. We had two orders of Tendon, one Edomae and one Original, but not a single tempura came with crispy breading. All the seafood and veggies inside were fresh though, and I REALLY loved the massive anago that came with the Edomae. The tempura fried poached egg was also so good, yet another brilliant way of eating egg that I’ll have to try myself sometime. Second reason for disappointment — it was impossible to eat the rice. There was delicious sauce on the tempura themselves, but not the rice, what?! I was already skeptic that tempura could go well with rice, and this certainly did not help. There are much better stalls to fork over your money to in Mitsuwa, so I’d say skip this one.

Grabbed lunch here and ordered the Edomae, the taste is delicious. It was a tad salty for me. For the price of $ 15 with tax. I don’t think it’s worth it. The bowl was mostly rice.

As I anxiously await my upcoming trip to Japan, I was thrilled to see a new food stand in Mitsuwa that I haven’t tried before. Apparently, the restaurant«Kaneko Hannosuke» in Tokyo was nominated in 2012 for one of the top restaurants in Tokyo for Zagat. My friends decided to get their food at other food stands with shorter lines, while I patiently waited for my food here. I am so glad that I did since they all started eyeing my food when I returned to the table. I ordered the Edomae tendon: $ 13.98– which came with Anago(conger eel), 2 shrimp, kakiage, soft boiled egg, nori, shishito, which is served over a rice bowl and a side of miso soup. Let’s be honest, fried food usually taste amazing! This place is no different. Since my meal included an egg and a vegetable, I’m going to pretend that it’s somewhat healthy. The tempura was light and crispy. The batter seemed very fresh and the special sauce that they used was simply delicious. The rice could use a bit more sauce but I’m sure you can ask for more when you place your order.

I was very excited to know that Hannosuke opened their first US branch in side mitsuwa’s food court. Having had their original tendon in Tokyo and loving it, I came with high expectations. I got their #1 edomae tendon, which included 2 shrimps, anago, soft boiled egg, kakiage(fritter of chopped squid), jalapeño pepper and crispy nori for $ 13.98. It also came with miso soup and a small serving of pickled ginger. The tendon needed more sauce drizzled on its rice, and the tempuras were not as crispy as the ones in Tokyo. The Tokyo restaurant allowed free refills of the pickled ginger whereas this store doesn’t. All that aside, the tendon was still the best I’ve had in the USA so far. I especially loved the anago and crispy nori. The wait here(30mins) is also relatively short compared to the 2hour wait in Tokyo, outside, in the cold. Overall, I left feeling satisfied and glad that there’s a good tendon place that’s accessible.

Yeah, yeah… I know everyone talks about the TenDon, but no one is giving their zaru soba any love! I ordered No. 7, which is Zaru Soba with a side of «big» tempura(two shrimp, one eggplant, one nori, and another vegetable that I do not remember). The zaru soba was a wee bit on the sukoshi(little/small portion) side, but I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch. Their soba had the perfect texture and chewiness, while the tsuyu(dipping sauce) was flavorful. Some places tend to water it down too much, but Hannosuke’s was just right. There is a plate of scallions and wasabi for your sauce. As for the tempura, it was delicious but I can’t say I am head over heels for it. They were indeed light and crispy, while the shrimp and vegetables were perfectly cooked. However, I’m still trying to figure out what makes them so popular. Perhaps I need to order a tempura set to find out. In short: Soba = Good. Tempura = Okay.

Good tempura despite this is really food from a «stall» in a food court. I enjoyed their tempura rice bowl. In fact, I think that the quality of their tempura is better than many of the sit down restaurants. I will go back again when I am around here again.

Delicious, crispy tempura. The soft boiled egg tempura and Nori tempura are so delicate and so tasty. Be prepared to wait for 20 minutes for your order though.

I just went here today and I absolutely loved the meal that I got. I ordered the Tempura Platter which came with the rice and the soft boiled egg, various tempura, and miso soup. You definitely get the bang for your buck because it cost around $ 10 and I was thoroughly satisfied and full with the meal. The miso had that lovely distinct salty and savoury notes to it, and the konbu was really smooth. The tempura was crisp and the sauce they provided with it wasn’t too salty. Ooh and the tofu in the miso was nice and firm and accented the broth. Egg was cooked really nicely, the yolk ran smoothly over the rice. All in all, a great meal to indulge yourself on with great presentation and a great price. I’ve been here and I’ll definitely eat here again trying other things on the menu

I’ve eaten here twice, one of a Saturday afternoon, around 6:30ish and once on a Sunday night around 7:30ish. Their cold soba noodles are delicious and their tempura is light and satisfying. I particularly like their tempura veggies. The slices are the thick, the batter is light and evenly coated. Portions sizes are good. Lines can be long, but service is quick and prices are very reasonable.

Super Delicious, came back for the 2nd time, i dd not write a review for the 1st time. But i order the same one, TENDON. There is no tendon Restaurant in NYC. I don’t remember what number, but it come with 2 shrimp, 1 kakiage, boiled soft egg, anago(sea eel) and nori seaweed. I asked for extra sauce on the side. Consistent! Keep up the good work!

I’ve been on the hunt for good ten-don ever since the trip to Tokyo. The ten-don at Hannosuke is legit. For a measly $ 13, you cannot beat the value. Hands down, a MUSTEAT item when in Mitsuwa Marketplace. The Edomae Ten-don comes is served in a traditional bowl and overflowing with crispy tempura style seafood. It also includes a fried egg and vege patty. Its awesome because it has an appearance of abundance. The tempura is freshly fried and served immediately as any proper tempura should be. Its crispy and moist. However, I think they need to switch out the frying oil and use less batter. Regardless, this is awesome tempura. The rice under the tempura is delicious. Steaming hot, soft, and covered in a flavorful soy sauce. Goes perfect with that savory tempura. I will definitely be back to enjoy another bowl!

Great tempura bowl. The pieces were fried to a golden consistency without being too oily or crispy and were well-seasoned. The rice was good quality and not too much or too little. They provide a miso soup with every order. Cash only.

I really wanted some shrimp tempura with udon but had to settle for just shrimp tempura with rice(#1 on the menu). The shrimp tempura didn’t seem like it was freshly fried, and the batter to shrimp ratio was not ideal(batter was way too trick for such a small shrimp). The rice was nicely sauced though. It was just way too much fried stuff, needed something to cut it and the bowl of miso soup that comes with the meal wasnt cutting it. Might try the anago next time, but that would be the last chance to win my loyalty amongst other great stalls inside mitsuwa

A bit greasy, but definitely very tasty. All of their tempura bowls look very nice and come with a nice sized portion of fried seafood and veggies. The breading is crispy and salted perfectly, and everything is nice and fresh. We did wait a bit longer than expected for our order though, so have some patience.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this place was. My friend and I dropped into the Mitsuwa Market early on Sunday morning, and already the line was long. We probably waited a good half an hour to order, then another good half an hour for our food to come out. We ordered no. 3 Edomae Bowl(salted eel, shrimp, pepper, poached egg, nori, vegetable kakiage), and we were not disappointed. The bowl was just jam packed with tempura goodness. Everything was unbelievably fried perfectly – golden brown, flaky and crispy. Not a single soggy bite, which is actually hard to get right. The sauce they drizzled on top made every bite heavenly. It’s a simple dish in the sense that it’s just different tempura on top of a bowl of rice, but somehow they just elevated this dish to another level. The price is also decent, if not cheap, for the ingredients. I highly recommend this place.

I was really excited to try their food after seeing their menu. But when it was time for me to order, I found that their menu items with soba were all unavailble. So I ended up getting the bowl with tempura shrimp, chicken, nori, soft egg, and snap peas. I was very disappointed. The tempura were soggy and I could really tell that they were frying the food in old oil. How can you even call this a tempura if it’s soggy and taste like old oil? So disappointing. The vendors few doors to the right does a better job with tempura than this place where they specialize in tempura…

The menu is small and straight forward with Tendon being the focus, what is Ten Don you may ask? Well basically it’s Tempura Donburi or tempura over white rice, but this is no run of the mill tempura it’s what all tempura strives to be. The most delicious blend of vegetables and proteins seasoned and lightly dredged in skillfully prepared tempura batter then delicately fried in hot sesame oil until the precise moment the outside crisps while the inside remains moist. In other words, cooked to perfection! Tendon Hannosuke’s methods are unique and seize your senses. The outside of the tempura is crunchy, whether a slice of sweet potato or cluster of baby shrimp, the nutty roasted flavors of the sesame oil used for frying and the sweetness of the food really come through, true umami. No matter if it’s large shrimp, chicken or the flaky slab of whitefish, this is a special Tendon. They also offer Anago(conger eel) and it’s spectacular, the eel takes to this process well and the portion is quite generous albeit a few dollars extra. Notes You can add on items to your order from an à la carte listing if you’d like to supersize your rice bowl, I recommend another poached egg — This place can get very busy and since everything is cooked to order wait times become a test of patience — Place your order and ask«how long?» come back a few minutes earlier than quoted — Meals include a solid bowl of miso soup — For a little kick use the shichimi shaker and add some spicy heat. Umami In your bowl you will find a crunchy sheet of nori that’s battered fried along with a bit of spicy pickled ginger to help refresh your palate. A gooey poached egg is given a quick dip in the oil, which crisps the surface without affecting its perfectly oozing yolk. At the bottom of the bowl is a brown sauce that brings the final card to the umami table, sweet. They have soba dishes as well, in the summer it will be served cold while during the winter months it’s in a hot broth. Various tempura is available to top your noodles. From the website «Hannosuke Kaneko who served as a chairman of Japanese chef Association left a famous saying „TEN-DON(Tempura Bowl) is the very delicacy that represents Tokyo.“ He was also a person of influence for the Japanese Tempura Association and composed a recipe book containing his secret Tendon recipe. Hannosuke’s grandson, Shinya Kaneko, inherited his grandfather’s philosophy and flavor and revived his legacy in the center of Tokyo, Nihonbashi.» «Additionally, the restaurant „Kaneko Hannosuke“ has been nominated as one of the top Tokyo Restaurant in 2012 by ZAGAT. We sincerely welcome customers from all over the world to savor our authentic and legendary Tempura bowl.» BSE2−63

Tried them out the first month they were open and only the tempura rice bowls were available. Now, the full menu is available which includes cold and hot soba. On a cold winter’s night, their hot soba soup with their crispy tempura on the side warms the soul. During Fri and Sat, the line to order gets pretty long and the wait for food is about 15−30min. Tip: take out available, cash only

For a Sunday, this placed didn’t have a long line like I anticipated. Lucky for me, there was no one in line and my order was placed and completed in 5 minutes… hmmm a little too fast don’t you think? Other Unilocal reviews say you need patience for this place but I didn’t encounter any of that. So I ordered the #9 Tempura box which consisted of 2 Shrimp, 1 fish, 1 chicken, 1 Nori, 1 fried green bean(it wasn’t a Pepper) and 2 dipping sauces. It was a small portion and not filing, which was a disappointment. It was good but I’ve definitely had better. Everything was fried, it didn’t have that crunchy consistency that I was looking forward to, but it did the job. Overall, it was just ok, nothing really to brag or write about, there’s a lot of other competion in the area that would be worth trying.

I am not a huge fan of fried seafood besides soft shell crabs but after looking around at the other stands, I ended up here but not disappointed. I had #6 the Chicken Tendon $ 8.95 chicken, shrimp, kakiage(veggie), nori, soft boiled egg and a bowl of miso soup. I liked that it was not overly oily. I don’t think I’ve had kakiage before(had to look it up) but I enjoyed it. The sauce they put over the chicken and rice was also pretty good. I think it’s some kind of soy sauce but not very salty, more sweet. I will be back the next time I am near by! CASHONLY!

FRIEDTEMPURASOFTBOILEDEGG!!! HOW??? How do they do that?! No, seriously. How do you make a soft boiled egg… and then deep fry it with panko… and it’s still perfectly runny inside and crispy on the outside… AMAZING. #3 consisted of random tempura and miso soup. You can also add a big shrimp like we did. I would probably add a few more eggs next time…

I shared a chicken combo ten don with my boyfriend and we added anago since he loves eel. The portions are huge and they come with miso soup too! The food was great. I loved all the tempura. It came with shrimp, soft boiled egg, nori, shishito, shrimp and edamame. My favorite was the shrimp and edamame. Not sure if they made a mistake with our order but we didn’t get any chicken in our combo. But we forgive them because all the food was so good! The anago is really worth it for the price cause it was huge! It was atleast a foot long. That one was probably my boyfriend’s favorite. He said he never had eel like this so it was a real treat for him. If you don’t want to get ramen, this place is worth checking out! You can easily share one order with another person.

The best TenDon(天丼/Tempura Don) I had in U.S. — #2 one small bowl of tempura don and cold buckwheat noodles The noodle had a nice bite and tempura was very satisfying. Tempura don shined over soba noodles for me. What’s so delicious and different? It was the sauce, salty-sweet-soy flavor, that has AgeSenbei,(揚げせんべい/deep-fried rice cracker flavor and soft-boiled egg Tempura that I’ve never had like this before, lightly cooked only outer layer and left light texture and inside was like a poached egg. The creamy soft yolk and tasty tempura with the delicious sauce sealed each grain of rice. It was Yolkalicioius! The tempura was light(not soggy and greasy) and the rice was perfectly cooked, not too wet and sticky and each grain of rice is individually standing up and shiny. I know that sounded crazy but(almost) true. There were 2 nice size shrimps, 1 soft boiled egg, 1 Shishito pepper, and one nori. It’s packed with a good quality tempura. For this price($ 8.99), it is a steal. #3 Edomae Tendon that my hubby got is what I am going to get next time. one Tendon with some gorgeous different kind of tempura and a miso soup with some Daikon pickles. I’ve never had Anago(saltwater eel) tempura before. One of the tempura was a BIG Anago tempura. I can wait!
