My grandson is a student at Perfect Start, and we regularly drop him off or pick him up from school. Don’t let the outside fool you, it is much, much more than a home-based day care. As soon as you go downstairs and look around the classroom, you KNOW that this is a real(though small) school. You can see evidence everywhere that this really is a place where learning happens! The classroom is brightly colored and every area of the room is set up to engage students, whether it be the dress-up play area, the library, or the cubicles filled with toys and activities meant to challenge as well as amuse. Ms. Tessie is always high energy(I don’t know how she keeps it up all day!). She builds positive relationships with her students and puts a ton of energy into differentiating lessons for their individual needs. Students do group activities as well as work with her one-on-one on their own individualized lessons. She uses a combination of professional curriculum(Star Falls) supplemented by activities that she creates or finds to meet the needs of the students in all areas, from reading, writing, math, history, and science, to motor skills, physical activity, practical skills(such as cooking and caring for other living things like little brothers and pets), and emotional skills. The language program includes Spanish and ASL. She also brings in an outside professional to do music. Her discipline method is firm yet gentle and her students respond well to her. My grandson has been attending Perfect Start for about a year and a half. He loves going to school every day, and he has made so much progress since he has been there. We will be sad when he has to leave Ms. Tessie next year to go to kindergarten. Ms. Tessie really has set the bar high for all of his future teachers!
