I went there for lunch with some friends who are not Indian. I told the owner lady that we would like to to have as many different items among the three thalis. She was very friendly and made sure each each thali had different items. My goal was to introduce my friends to some authentic Indian food. As always the food was delicious and authentic. I particularly like the thepla and the dals. The price is reasonable too. Highly recommended.

Best Gujarati food in Edison. Their Gujarati Thalis are on point. The staff there is so friendly. If you haven’t been there, you have to and you will keep going there.

The interior is cool — there are murals all over the walls, and individual bungalow-like booths with garlands hanging on them. Dim lighting and interesting embroidery on the ceiling. We walked past the paan booth at the front and sat down. We ordered the Gujarati and Kathiawadi thalis, and our friendly waiter helped us choose between the options for the vegetable dishes. Mine came with 3 veggies, pulao with kadhi, thepla, dhokla, gulab jamun, raita, pickle, jaggery, and a glass of buttermilk. It was all very good — if you aren’t familiar with Gujarati food, it tends to be on the sweeter side. Masala chai was also good, served in a «New York Skyline» mug. We’ll probably be back! They had a mithai case too, so we’ll have to get some of that on our next visit.

Three of us went there today in the hopes of having a proper Gujarati thali. We were the only customers there for a while. The bearded young man who seated us was not the most welcoming. We ordered patra, khandvi, and pani puri for starters. The pani puri was alright, but the khandvi was thick and cold. The patra looked like it was microwaved, with no sear marks possibly from the frozen section of a supermarket. We ordered 2 Gujarati thalis and one Jhupdi Special thali. If you’re planning to go there because you’ve eaten at Thakkar’s in Mumbai, stop reading. The Undhiu lacked taste, the bhindi had no chili or dhana-jeera or salt. The pickle looked like cooked channa coated with some store bought pickle masala. The dhokla was cold and hard, the raita was sweet dahi with dhania. The srikhand was grainy and super sweet. The rotla on the Jhupdi thali was good and fresh. The phulkas were perfection, just as good as if they were from a Gujarati home. The kadhi was excellent, as was the chhaas. Our friend who ordered the Jhupdi special was not particularly happy either, considering it was his choice of restaurant. I’m truly sorry to say that the service was lack lustre and the food, the same. I hope it picks up because a Gujarati thaali can be so imaginative and flavourful. This simply, was not. Disappointed.

Delicious and authentic Gujarati food. The thalis are worth every single penny. They look sumptuous and are completely filling, even the mini one! The ambience of this place is different from similar other places, they have made it look like a quaint hut with private booths, like the name suggests. The service is quick and efficient. I would definitely recommend this place, especially if you’re a vegetarian!

The place is decent. Food is quite well priced. But it needs to be cleaner 1) Their toilet is a mess. In this day and age, which restaurant keeps tioilets that do not flush? 2) Food is super sweet. I understand gujarati food has to be sweet. But this is a little too much. The positives One of the few homemade gujju places. Fairly authentic.

Visited there just yesterday. I was with my German friend who is very interested in Indian food. The Ambiance is nice and the service quality is great as well. however the food itself was not very appealing. the food is almost bland, dint have any salt to start with(I eat very less salt with my food) and dint have any sharp characteristics to it as Indian food should have. I ordered Khandvi, Ragda«Pattish», and the gujrati thali, and overall it was a disappointment. The Khandvi was undercooked, with little to no «Tadka» which basically made us feel as if we were eating just the flour. Ragda«pattish» I felt the potato used had gone bad or the chef had gone crazy with the«Amchur Powder» but has a weird taste to it. for the choice of vegetable I went with Baingan Bharta and Undio and the both fell flat. baingan bharta had absolutely no flavour. My German Friend also suffered the same fate. He highlighted the fact that the food was tasteless. Overall i give this place 2 stars for the ambience and the service however, the food, you are better off eating some place else.

Really great authentic Gujarati food. Cute rustic ambiance and friendly service. The thalis have everything you’d want. I don’t know what other reviewers mean by food is bland… if was delicious and tasted home cooked. We drove from Washington, DC to eat here… it was worth it!

Don’t waste your time and money at this place!!! There are better restaurants that offer decent Gujarati food on Oak tree Rd(near Apna bazaar). Myself and my husband, who is a Gujarati decided to try this place on our way from NY to Philly. We ordered a Gujarati thali, baingan ka bartha, patra for appetizer and chaas. The food was cold, and tasteless. The only item we liked was bajra roti. Patra was the one you get in frozen section in any Indian store, simply reheated and served to us. Baingan ka bartha was stale and so were the other sides. Dahi and chaas were bland + chalky and didn’t taste like they should.

I love Gujarati food and drive from Philadelphia area to go here. The food is not the very best, somewhat overcooked, but it is very satisfying to me, and certainly is a good representation of Gujarati food.

I know, I see a lot of good reviews that drove me to this restaurant on a hungry Sunday afternoon. We ordered the special Thali and Gujarati thali. Both were looking too much filled with a variety of tasty dishes on our plate. But, the food was little bit stale. I could smell the stale brinjal in baigan ka bhartha! Am sorry, though they have imitated vatan in the city it did not stand out as per freshness of food.

Authentic Gujarati cuisine, small but beautiful décor and great tasty food! This is as authentic as it gets for Indian food. Make sure you starve yourself a bit before you head out!

Let me tell you upfront. I’m a South Indian and I have had lots of good authentic Gujarati food. Jhupdi’s food and ambience are average. Many of the dishes tasted very similar to each other and were bordering on bland. The best item that we had their was their paan for $ 1!

Went back to the restaurant in Apr 2012 and is still just as good as I remember it was in 2005. It is hard for westerners to appreciate such food. This is very homestyle, non-glamorous, non-greasy stuff. Service is probably just average or even below average. But then just go with the right expectations. Just go there for the food.

This place is special. You have a touristy type venue of Indian places that’s understood to be geared towards the natives. You walk in and the walls are painted like a typical Indian village in North India, and the booths have that same reed and bamboo feel to it. But, the owners are totally local and the food maintains the local flavor. A truly authentic experience foodwise that’s geared towards the tourist ambiance-wise, yet the only audience isn’t tourists, but locals. A very unique joint.
