Grunenfeld German Shepherds

We love our German shepherd from Jackie at Grunenfeld kennel. Penny is 3 years old and she is the sweetest girl, most protective, well behaved and intelligent dog we have even had. This is our third German shepherd but the first from Grunenfeld. Penny has had a couple of health issues, dry skin but solved the problem (started her on fish oil pills) anal gland issue but solved the problem (changed her diet). There is no genetic issue with our German shepherd. As I write this, Penny is chasing a moth around our living room. She is too fun!

We purchased litter mates almost 11 years ago (where does the time go?) from Jackie. Her dogs truly are superior and even in their advancing age people still think they are young looking dogs. We can never take them out in public without some dog lover complimenting us on them. The real compliment comes when other GSD owners give them praise. You get what you pay for. Both have such amazing temperament and have helped us raise two young kids (7 and 9 now). The abuse these dogs get it is amazing how they handle it. From being dressed as princesses to being forced into police duty riding in an electric police car, it is always taken in stride. Sadly as our dogs start to reach the end of their life we have began looking to the future and it brought us back to Jackie. We were so happy to see she still breeds and we look forward to another dog or two from her when the time is right.
Almost forgot, one more quick story. While out walking our dogs 6 – 7 years ago a Sheriff pulls up. Tells us how beautiful they dogs are and ask if they were Grunenfeld Shepherds. He just knew by looking at them.

Let me start off by saying that we absolutely love our GSD. She has a wonderful temperament and is a loving part of our family. With that said I am extremely disappointed with this breeder. First off when we picked our puppy up she had a large scab across her throat because the little ribbon that is used to tell the puppies apart was never taken off and just covered up by a collar so as our pup grew the ribbon began cutting into her throat. Clearly this is a good indicator that the puppies were not being properly cared for. Jackie did apologize. Then when we brought our pup home she had a bad case of ear mites. Now fast forward 3 years… since we’ve had our dog she has anal gland issues (which is not the breeders fault) urinary incontinence, and now pannus which is an inheritated disease that our dog will have for the rest of her life and can lead to blindness. She is only 3!!! This is our first time getting a dog from a breeder and i guess we expected a dog with less health issues. Again, we LOVE our dog so the one positive is that Jackie does breed great family dogs, but we will never get a dog from her again.
