This place is the worst. Do not go there, went there with a friend, it took them a long time for us to be seated, the waitress was a older portuguese man and he was just nasty and rascist!.. Food its not that great its not worth it, i rather go and spend my money to valenca or algarve… Just horrible

Let me preface this with the fact that I’ve eaten at this restaurant on a number of occasions and for the most part has been pretty good. On the other hand on my most recent visit(a Wednesday at 9 P.M.) I was left severely disappointed. The place was pretty full and with people still walking in for tables so I had no expectation that they might be in the processor shutting down for the night. I ordered a BBQ meat combo and to my surprise got a platter of nothing but reheated BBQ meat, reheated rice and some cold fries. Honestly you don’t reheat BBQ and you most certainly don’t serve it to your clients especially when it’s such a simple dish to prepare. The audacity and sheer lack of respect to serve such garbage to a customer in what I can only imagine would be a cost saving effort has totally ruined this establishment for me from here on out.(Valenca is just minutes down the road). *Fui servido carne grelhada requesida e practicamente fria*

Although the name condones a watered down, or fast-food-esqe Portuguese dining experience — don’t be fooled! Portugal Express is far from your typical Portuguese BBQ place. Be warned — this place is almost ALWAYS packed on a weekend night, but I assure you the food is well worth the wait! They have all of your typical Portuguese BBQ staples, chicken, short ribs, pork — but they also have finer Portuguese dishes that are reminiscent of Avo’s Sunday dinners. And with prices on point, you are always getting a good portion for your money. Everything is always fresh and flavorful, from the appetizers right to the desert. I recommend the Bacalhou A Brás — a yummy mix of fried cod, shoestring potatoes, sautéed onions and egg. You will not be disappointed.

The broiled calamari is awesome. Highly recommend it, as well as just about everything else on the menu.

Overall very good! The lobster in the paella was a little over-cooked and it needed salt, but everything was tasty. The server was terrific by helping us make choices and made us feel right at home. I’d go back.

Authentic feel with huge portions, delicious marinades, meats, and sides. Good prices and attentive servers. What else can you ask for? The only thing that dropped them a star is lack of fountain soda for me but hey if that doesn’t matter to you it is a 5 star place

Portugal Express is not located in the most desirable section of Elizabeth. It is located on South Broad St. right off of US Highway 1&9 but if you are in the area and looking for Portuguese style food with a solid menu ranging from chicken to steak and seafood, then it’s worth stopping in. They have bar seating with four choices of beer on tap, two domestic and two imported and the bar is well stocked with alcohol. The dining room seating is very bare and nothing impressive. Service is attentive. I like the fact that they automatically bring to the table seasoned pitted olives and fresh rolls as an appetizer. My entrée was Tuna steak with broccoli and potatoes all sautéed in garlic and onions. Was it the best meal I ever had? No! But for 15 dollars you get your money’s worth. I found the tuna steak a little too fishy tasting but I enjoyed the vegetables which were seasoned and sautéed nicely. They also make a nice double espresso for 3 dollars that is the size of a tripple.

If you want to eat delicious Portuguese food at a great price, look no further. Hard core traditional food with the mandatory tv’s playing soccer 24⁄7 Great food and cold beer; what more can you ask for.

This restaurant is really good. It’s a good place if you just want to drink and watch games or if you want to have a family lunch or dinner. The servers speak both English and Portuguese, nowadays is really hard to find a Portuguese restaurant that people actually speak Portuguese. The dishes can pretty much feed two people or more and it’s not expensive for the size of the plate. It’s hard to find a good restaurant in Elizabeth, I super recommend this place.

The food was cold and there wasn’t enough seasoning. Very untypical of Portuguese restaurants. The service was even worse. I’m definitely not coming back and I do not recommend this place.

I did not realize that i pass by this corner store every time I come home I honestly enjoyed my garlic chicken. It came with fries and rice. Big serving good for 3 – 4 people depending on how hungry you are. The place is very cozy, friendly and if you just want to sit and enjoy your drink, they’ve got that too.

the food is excellent and great proportion I ordered the picanha meal which came with 4 big slices and a load of fries. the beans and rice are amazing! overall great value I will however give this a poor rating due to the fact that the waitress’s are awful they don’t have a smile on there face. it looks like they are on there death bed. lighten up one should be happy to have a job. they took 10 – 15 to take Down my ordered it took me less then 2 minutes to figure out what I wanted and had to wait that long. that is unacceptable considering they weren’t even busy. I went in with a friend that also ordered and he got the same treatment. if it weren’t for the poor service this place would get 5 stars. hopefully they clean there act up

Very affordable prized for a platter of food. I bought the combo misto that comes with fries, rice, chicken, 1 strip of rib and 2 cutlets. The chicken tastes great and 3 ate from this plate. But the pork cutlets had a funky smell, when pork has a bad smell it means is no longer good, the rib we cut it in half and what a disappointment, it was bright red, and mostly fat! It was not even rare so we didn’t eat it. We did take out so no opportunity to return the food plus it was snowing. The food was cold and yes $ 12 but we stuffed ourselves with fries and rice! I think there’s better bbq places in the area. I have no idea why this place has 4 stars, I guess is the beer and late night hours, is the only nice looking bar in this area.

Fabulous place my boss introduced me too. Daily specials fantastic. Service takes a little long but I believe it’s because the lunch hoir crowd is so busy. Try the Tuna Steak!

The food was delicious. We ordered the clam appetizer which was very flavorful and tender. Next time I’ll order something else instead of the flank steak for my main course. See pics and try this place out and judge for yourself.

My friend and I decided to meet up for lunch somewhere midway since we live an hour away from each other. We were shocked at how good the food was. Like other Unilocalers said, this is not an «express» restaurant — this is more like tavern style. This is not a big deal but if you are not from the area, parking can seem a bit sketchy since you have to park on the street(no parking lot available). The first time we ordered steak and shrimp to share(HUGEPORTION). It was amazing. The steak was well prepared with a lot of flavor and the shrimp was huge(with head on). We came back and tried Seafood Casserole and Suckling Pig. Seafood casserole has a lot of flavor and it was delicious. Suckling pig fell a little short compared — it wasn’t anything special. I would recommend steak and seafood anything. Next time, we will try chicken and ribs.

This place is the real deal. Come here for authentic Portuguese food in a casual atmosphere. I’ve been coming here with my family for years — the food & service are consistently on point. My only wish for this place is that they would change their name because it sounds so corny. I think the owner needs to open another location because anywhere he takes his recipes will be a success!

I wasn’t sure what Portuguese food entailed, but if this is it, it’s really good! My dad got garlic chicken with rice and it was such a pleasant surprise! I can imagine myself regularly going out of my way for this. The sauce was so good on the yellow rice. it also came with fries, but i think beans would have been a better combination. It was only $ 7.50 too! I got fried calamari and my mom got pork chops. The serving size was huge!!! And I was so happy that the food was delicious and very fair in price. I do think the calamari sauce should have been thicker, but they were big and juicy. Not a fan of porkchops though.(In general) I really did think it would be expensive and it didnt look appetizing at first but totally wrong! And the waiter was very friendly. He was patient and entertained all my dad’s obnoxious questions about the soccer championship on the monitors and about Portuguese food. He smiled very warmly and seemed genuinely happy to be there.
