Soul food and a wonderful owner with a heart of gold. Best deal in Northern MI. Northwoods soda is a bonus!

The best food you’ll ever put in your mouth! Only thing unfortunate about the restaurant is it’s only seasonal. I literally could eat there three times a week.

Best 5 dollar food you will find. PERIOD. She always has great food and it’s always fresh. The only suggestion is to get there EARLY. Once the food is out, it’s out for the day. She has 4 or 5 types of chicken and some other main dishes and maybe 15 or 20 sides to choose from. You can never go wrong.

Old school home cooking. Cafeteria style, no frills. I had jerk chicken, beans&rice, cooked greens. 1st jerk chicken in countless years. Yummmmm. Spouse had pork chop and creamy garlic potatoes. Again beyond reproach. Best food value around. $ 5 .don’t see how. On my way to becoming a regular. Cannot wait to try meatloaf, BBQ, mac & cheese. Highly recommend

KOLUs is the BEST! When our family comes in to town they all make sure one night is planned for kolus! The coconut cake is cant miss. Holy moly. Our favorites are the pulled pork and hubby loves the meatloaf… And the mac and cheese! I could go on forever. You cant go wrong at all! Perfect for picnics at the beach :)

Five or six selections of entre with 2 side dishes for less than fast food prices. Tasty comfort food and fast service. Check it out you won’t be disappointed. Bernard S

Not sure why people are in love with this place except maybe the price? Food is just so so, definitely true southern choices that you would find at a southern buffet. If you have to question how it could be that cheap and you couldn’t do it at home for the price then you need to think about where the food came from.

See my tip– you can’t MAKE such good comfort food at home for this price – fried chicken and pulled pork and that thick homemade Mac n cheese and sweet potatoes with extra spice. The pulled pork was Smokey tasting, delicious. Just a little place, little bit of a hole in the wall – but everything home made.

You will walk in and you will be nervous. Because this place is a little on the dumpy side. But don’t let it deter you! You’re going to get a pretty solid meal for just $ 5. As others have mentioned, $ 5 buys you one main course and two sides. Sides include mac and cheese, greens, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, pasta salad, other veggies(like corn and beans), beans, etc. There’s A LOT to choose from, but once it’s gone it’s gone for the day. For mains? Ribs, pulled pork, fried chicken, jerk chicken, and a few others that I’m blanking on. Me? I happened to get the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and the candied sweet potatoes. I wasn’t super crazy about the mashed potatoes but damn, those sweet potatoes were good. Perfectly sweet. And the fried chicken? Holy crap, you guys! Maybe some of the best I’ve ever had. So juicy I had to wipe my chin. And a HUGE serving. Two massive pieces. I barely finished one. The leg was almost the size of a turkey leg! And did I mention it was only $ 5??? Dang. My biggest complaint is I ordered a soda and it had some weird film on it. I didn’t drink it. But the food? It was awesome. My friends own a cottage in the area and told me the lady who owns this place started by selling soul food at a cart to local construction workers and managed to raise up enough money to open up this storefront so props to her for livin’ the dream.

$ 5 buys you a main course and two sides. The bbq ribs are my personal favorite dished up with a side of homemade mac n cheese and hawaiian coleslaw. Everything is prepared by one woman and mann does she know how to cook. If you’re looking for«downhome» soul food in Northern Michigan, this is the place. Despite the fact that most people get theirs to go, I usually eat at one of the small tables in or just outside the restaurant. Kolu’s is open for lunch and dinner, but you should try to get there at least by 5 because stuff sells out quickly. Tucked away in a nondescript strip, with little signage Kolu’s can easily be overlooked. Definitely worth locating this gem of a restaurant, which might very well offer the best comfort food and the best meal deal in the state.
