My first ever county fair. Being from Chicago, where we see cows when we visit the zoo, it was quite an experience here at the fair. I was not disappointed. Things to check out: 1. Food, food, food There is so much food here. You can get everything from a full meal to a deep fried twinkie/bacon/mac and cheese. Of course, there are carnival staples like funnel cakes and elephant ears too. I was pleasantly surprised by the relatively low prices. $ 2.99 for a hot dog, fries, and a drink. It may be because I’m from Chicago, but I thought that was more than reasonable. 2. Carnival rides/games Carnival favorites like the ferris wheel and the Himalayans are there. Plus, there were a ton of games. 3. Music I was surprised at the(relative) big names playing. Saturday night was Winonna Judd and Sunday night was REO Speedwagon. It’s free to sit in the general seating, but there is a fee if you want to be up close. Many people brought lawn chairs and set up shop right outside the bandstand area. 4. The animals Refer above to where I’m from, but I really thought seeing all the animals was neat. I’m pretty sure some locals looked at me like I was crazy when I shouted out, ‘Wow, look at all the cows!” On hand: cows(meat and dairy), goats, sheep, turkeys, chickens, roosters, bunnies, and even a baby emu! Added bonus: outside of every animal building was a ton of soap and water to wash your hands! 5. Random vendors I was so surprised at all of the items being sold. Jacuzzis. Cars. Elk antlers. What a weird mix of goods. Overall, I had a really fun time. It was definitely worth going!

«Fishy Friend! Fishy Friend! What did you win? A FISHYFRIEND!» Love the ping pong ball fishy game. It’s the only game where the prize that you take home ends up being more expensive than the game itself. I heard a rumor that Walworth County fair was the largest county fair in the nation. I don’t know how this rumor got started, but: False. I would say, however, it’s got some of the best live-stock I’ve ever seen. The Walworth County fair tends to pull in some pretty decent bands. Though I haven’t been to them, I bet it’s a good time.

Fun things to do at the fair: –Eat a deep fried twinkie/banana/Snickers’ bar. Anything you can throw into a boiling vat of oil, you can buy here. Mmmm. –Go play a carnival game and while you’re royally ripped off amuse yourself with that Ausin Powers line, «Carnies… small haaands» –Hit up the 4-H arts & crafts barn and check out all the amazing stuff those crazy cow-showing kids create(some of the drawings and photography are actually really good; other things that are plastered with a big blue ribbon and«First Place Winner» make you wonder a little bit…) –Ride the Satellite ride or whatever it’s called where it spins so fast you get stuck to the pads on the walls(good ol’ centrifugal force!) and try hard not to throw up. I dare you. –Eat an elephant ear. Don’t worry they’re not real… again, they’re deep fried(doughnut dough basically) and rolled in cinnamon sugar. Besides the county fair, there is a killer flea market held here once a month summer through late September — so good I’d consider flying all the way home to go to it. Where do these Midwest folks get such crazy cool stuff?

One of the best county fairs in the country. Each Labor Day weekend, over a hundred thousand people descend on the city of Elkhorn for the annual tradition of the fair. What better way to celebrate the passing of summer and the welcome to autumn than by crowding the passages of the fairgrounds eating hundreds of different foods from a menagerie of vendors. The fair is the largest in the state and the second oldest in Wisconsin. Along with the carnival it also has the usual animal shows and food judging. What separates the fair from other pretenders is the largest farm machinery display in the Midwest, four days of harness racing, tractor and truck pulls, a demolition derby and some big name country and rock concerts at the main stage. If you are in town, even near Lake Geneva during Labor Day, join the thousands who make this great fair an annual rite of passage.
