I’ve tried to give this place another chance. Only pit-beef spot in the Ellicott City area to choose from, close to where I work. Well… I’m disappointed again. Dry pit-beef. I asked for extra BBQ every time and they never give it. Food always COLD upon delivery… fries so cold they are hard. yet I tried to order from them again… saying to myself, «no way they’re gonna do this again».but …they did… guess I’ll take the long route and drive to PIONEERPIT-BEEF located on Rolling rd. a little far away but EXCELLENTFOODCHOICE for pit-beef.

Large Mid-rare pit beef with extra horseradish is as good as any beef in town! Possibly the perfect balance between meat and more meat.

There’s no place to sit down, but that’s no real quibble. The pit beef and turkey are simply excellent. Remember folks– this is Maryland, not Texas. Lower your expectations a bit. We do crab cakes, not pulled pork. The guys working are always very friendly, you watch them make your sandwich, and the Tiger sauce is to die for. Perfectly nippy in temperature with great flavor. Prices aren’t low, but they’re not exorbitant either. With no other barbecue place around, they could be a lot worse, but you can tell they make an honest effort to give you good food, service and prices.

Darn good barbecue but no place to sit. I’d definitely recommend for a quick lunch stop to eat at work, home, or car. During my last visit, the chicken sandwich was just awesome. Not one of the prettiest meals I’ve ever had, but when I’m sitting alone in my car eating a delicious sandwich, sauce dripping down my to my elbows, I think of the experience as a judgement free zone! The canopy also does a mean pickle! Be sure to get it quartered though because, as the man behind the register said, «Who eats big pickles whole?» On that note — generally fun staff!

I’ve never had a bad meal here, and the service is not only quick but friendly. They’ve yet to get an order wrong, overcharge, not deliver on time, or just in general disappoint.

Beef BBQ tastes bad and is so sloppy couldn’t even stand the look of it… tossed it in the trash can.

The Canopy is good, not great. Small hole in the wall next to the newly renovated McDonald’s on Route 40. The place is mainly carry out only with a standing only counter to eat at if you choose to dine in. They now accept credit cards. I’ve eaten here a dozen or so times over the last decade and it does the trick to satisfy my BBQ hankering. I always get the pit beef which you can order at any temperature. The sandwich is decent, but it is missing that«wow» factor that you find at better BBQ places. The BBQ sauce is tasty and reminds me of Arby sauce. The fries are boardwalk style and they give you a huge portion. If you are local, they generally have coupons in the mail for $.50 to a $ 1 off a sandwich. All in all, I recommend giving it a shot, but for any BBQ snobs, you might be disappointed.

I love this place, especially the delicious Pit Beef with lots of fresh grated horseradish that clears the sinuses! The pork BBQ is good for Yankee BBQ. My family loves the BBQ Chicken sandwich but that is something that I would never order for myself. Great potato salad and slaw! Don’t gaze behind the counter too long because it looks pretty nasty back there! But restaurant kitchens, even the best, can be disgusting!

I would have upgraded this to four stars– but I can’t say I would eat this regularly. The coleslaw is my favorite part about it-amazing amounts of coleslaw for a great price. The BBQ sandwich is pretty good too, but it lacks consistency. The staff were very nice and the turn around time for the food was incredibly short. Maryland isn’t a big state for this type of BBQ food– so I guess thats forgivable.

I had the pit beef sandwich and fries. It was really good. They had everything prepared fast and the fries portion was huge I couldn’t even eat half of them! Definitely will be back. Only thing is no seating.

I love canopy! I go pretty often and usually order wings and ribs. Both of which are amazing. I’ve also tried their pit beef which was great and cooked to perfection. The staff are very friendly and rather attractive. The lines aren’t very long most if the time and tend to move fast. The only thing wrong with canopy is the crab soup. I may just me picky but I don’t like shells in my soup also it has a taste like no other crab soup I’ve had and not in a good way. Overall I’d recommend this place just steer clear of the soup

Got turkey n beef sandwiches… turkey was more tender but both good none the less. Fast service. Their baked beans were vegetarian –very good still :-) Can stop in for a quick bite.

This place is soo good. I go with my dad whenever we’re going through the area, and I usually get either the delicious pit beef or the BBQ chicken. You can’t go wrong at this place, the large sandwiches are 6.95 and huge, the fries are fresh cut, the place is small and takes care of business. They pay attention to what matters — the food. And it shows. Highly recommended!

I have lived in Ellicott City for a long time, this place has been opened since I moved here in 1990, and have only been to this place once. Why? Their food are dry, very dry, if I wanted a roast beef sandwich, I rather go to Giant, and buy the meat there

Another four rating, I guess I only rate places I am a fan of. It is simple. Go to The Canopy to get Pit Beef(Rare, Onions, Tiger sauce.) The wings are fine, nothing to write home about, but definitely fine. The sides are good too. Honestly, I ALWAYS get the Pit Beef(which is considerably better than Oakey’s Grill.)

Meh. I visited twice and ordered beef sandwiches both times. The fries were soggy, potato salad bland, and coleslaw subpar. However, the sandwiches were good and I suppose that’s why I was there. I also tried the ribs, and they were so-so. If you do like pit beef, The Canopy doesn’t exceed its three-star rating.

I bought chicken wings, a full rack of ribs, pit turkey sandwich, and a roast pork sandwich in order to give my fellow Unilocalers a decent review. I like this place, I don’t love it. The servings are ample and what stands out is THEMEATISSOOOOTENDER. What the meat lacks is pizazz… where’s that pit smoke taste? I hope you don’t expect me to add some sauce or burgerking smoke juice to make it bbq flavored? Wings are a waste of time. Ribs too bland but moist. Verdict: Stick with the sandwiches where you can add horseradish, tiger sauce, or bbq sauce to make it right on point. I would say 3.5 stars would describe it… if I didn’t have better choices in the Baltimore area, I would come here again but because I like other places way better, I’d only go back to Canopy if I was really hungry and in a hurry.

About a mile down the road, you have an Arby’s fast food joint. Of course, we all know Arby’s is famous for their roast beef sandwich… but it’s fast food. If we took Arby’s and made their food less fast and more real, I think you’d end up with something close to the pit beef sandwiches at the canopy. The pit beef is pretty solid. I get mine rare or medium-rare and it’s flavorful and juicy here. While it’s not the best I’ve ever had… it’s still a good pit beef. They, like all Pit Beef places, have tiger sauce to go with your sandwich, but I wished it had a little more of the horseradish kick to it. The fries here are pretty good too. The other items on the menu seem a little so-so to me though. The prices are a little bit on the high side. However, if you live in Howard County, you’ll get a coupon packet and/or Clipper Magazine in the mail every once in a while… there are usually The Canopy coupons there.

Not bad at all! I only tasted a little bit of the pit beef. Not the best I’ve tasted, but still pretty good — juicy and flavorful and they don’t skimp out on the meat. I ordered the old bay wings… in baltimore, it’s just called baltimore wings… but until this day, I wasn’t able to find old bay wings that compared with a pub that we used to go to in baltimore city. The old bay wings here are delectable! =) Not dry at all and full of old bay flavor! Yum yum yum!!! I loved it! No seating inside by the way, but I think that’s how pit beef places are supposed to be anyways. Great wings!!! ok pit beef sandwich =) yes I will go here again! =)

Good pit beef. I like how I can get it the way I like it, medium rare. Choice of toppings and tiger sauce if requested. Love a good pit beef sandwich. My wife says their MD crab soup is really good too. Fries are a little greasy but other than that, it is good food!
