I’ll be the first to admit that I have some issues with this station. It’s old, which in itself isn’t a problem but it’s layout hasn’t been updated and it needs to be. Sometimes in the morning there are truly massive lines to enter, and that’s because there are only two turnstyles located at either entrance. In the middle of the station(you know, away from the entrances) they have a multiple turnstyle setup, which doesn’t make much sense to me. I’d LOVE to see this extended to all the subway entry points. The place also tends to get leaky, especially on the Manhattan bound side. I swear they have more soccer and footballs on the platforms then other stations, maybe because of the Newtown athletic field that’s not too far away. The turnstyle door(Gothamist so aptly called them the babyback ribs of death) on the Queens bound side along Queens Blvd has been broken for months and months, completely unable to turn without superhuman strength(I almost got stuck in there). So people use the emergency exit, where cops are often waiting with ticket books poised to strike. Be warned, this is a station that they frequent for this purpose. It’s been roped off for a few weeks, hopefully that means repairs are soon to follow! The station has at least two homeless regulars who usually keep to themselves. One sleeps on the wooden bench in the middle of the platform on the Queens bound side. No one seems eager to evict him. The other is a man with a small dog who sets up shop also on the Queens bound side, by the Queens Blvd exit. He has a sign and an odd smile, but is otherwise harmless. The station is small, like many in Queens not on an express line, but during rush hour gets packed. It can be a hassle getting in and out quickly. There always seem to be a lot of elderly folks, a lot of people with strollers, the usual stuff that slows you down. ETA: As of March 2015 they replaced the broken doors AND added three brand new turnstiles to the Eastern most entrance! YES! I called 511 to let them know about the broken door, and they said they’d repair it, so I take full credit for this improvement. You know who to thank kids.
