Usually shop at TOPS Elmira two or three times per week — one big time every two weeks. This morning had bad experience with management. Did not discover until end of check out that the TOPS coupons I was using for a substantial savings(nearly $ 30) did not take effect until the next day. I stated to the cashier — who was polite — that I was sorry and did not mind just backing out the purchases or if management could override and apply today, I was happy with either approach. I was embarrassed and did not want to make the person behind me wait. Unfortunately, tThe person bagging my groceries(T Head — I assumed a supervisor) took the coupons and made a rude comment as she walked away that if she«did it for me she would have to do it for everyone.» She took at least 10 minutes conferring with another male manager before coming back. Her body language, inability to look me in the eye, gestures and attitude were very negative and made the situation worse. I again stated I was ok with just backing the items out. The male manager began to make statements like«I don’t know what paper you got these from» and I shouldn’t have made the mistake(paraphrasing). I stated he did not need to berate me(I was embarrassed enough) and that I had already admitted it was my mistake. He walked away and the supervisor began pulling things out of the cart. When I asked what took so long to make a decision, she stated they had to check what their process was since the sales price was not yet in their system against those items. I again stated if it was easier to just back them out, I was perfectly fine with that. Bottom line, she hand-entered the items and I left. I appreciate that the management gave me the sales price; however, the length of time it took to inconvenience other customers when I said it was ok to just take the items off and the attitude of the supervisor were unacceptable. If you are in a customer service industry, you need to learn to deal quickly and wisely with unexpected issues. I was not rude, I was a regular customer but no longer. It’s a shame one or two store personnel can decrease sales for a store, which greatly needs to increase it sales. Suggestions for TOPS: 1) Have a process already in place for when something like this happens; 2) Have a policy for ALL personnel on dealing with customers — smile, look them in the eye, be polite, if you cannot fully meet customer’s expectations(yes some are unreasonable), stay polite but insistent; 3) thank them. I spent close of $ 200 but felt like I was unwanted because of the treatment for my mistake.

Ehh, Tops. I’m not a fan of this store. It’s smells like old beer cans(even far away from the redemption machine). It’s usually dirty, especially the restrooms. I wasn’t impressed with the employees or the store layout. The prices are much higher than other stores. The only good thing about Tops is the bulk candy section.

Ugh! This store is awful. Their prices are NOT lower. Their service is mostly non-existent, long lines, unknowledgable staff, etc. I have tried the self check out three times and it never works. I will only go here if I am forced to.

This is my go-to grocery store when I only need a few things. It’s fairly clean, but often has long wait times to check out. The good thing is that they have the self-checkout so if you only have a few items, you can get through quickly. Another bonus is that they have a rewards program for gasoline and have their own on-site gas station. Prices are lower than Wegmans, but probably on par with other stores such as P&C and Weis
