We had an unexpectedly mild late November weekend so Rick and I decided to haul our bikes out for one last ride of the season. We’d already put them away for the season, or so we thought. And as our road bikes were the most accessible, we decided to hit the Allegheny River Trail because it’s paved for its entire length. Like last time, we began our ride in Emlenton because there’s ample parking. The morning was a bit brisk, and even though I’m not one for cold weather, it did get ye olde blood circulating. The temperatures warmed up progressively as the day went on though. Even though we wore our warmer bike gear, it’s important to dress in layers when riding on cool days. That way you can shed or add layers as needed. We pretty much covered the same ground mentioned in my previous review. We did about a 50 mile round trip, including both the Rockland and Kennerdell Tunnels. Again, remember that both tunnels are over a half mile long and they’re not lit, so bring either a flashlight or a headlight. And here’s something: lengthy unlit tunnels are COLD in cooler weather. Clammy cold! So be prepared! I really can’t add too much, other than to say we had a pleasant ride along the river valley. We learned a few new things about the trail since our previous ride. For instance, in 1864 John Wilkes Booth was part owner of an unsuccessful oil well which was one mile south of Franklin very near the trail. And at Indian God Rock, 8.5 miles south of Franklin, is a set of over 50 Native American carvings dating between 1200 and 1750. Good way to spend a crisp, yet beautiful day.
